The Lunchbox Interview: Bella Vautour (Painter)

Posted on 2019-08-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

When art calls, you should answer. It’s never too late to start again.

My guest today is Bella Vautour, someone who is rediscovering her passion for art. In the last 8 months, she went from a random suggestion to practicing artist, and now is offering lessons to help others find their way to painting. She joins me to talk about how this got reawakened in her, and the great set of opportunities that have made it more possible.

See more of her art on her Instagram @YsabelleVautour or on her Facebook page.

The Lunchbox 2019-08-19: Emma Chevarie

Posted on 2019-08-19 by encaf1 Posted in Music Runs Through It, The Lunchbox

This week, Emma remembers the famous Woodstock concert fondly through the eyes (and the instruments) of local bands from this weekend, and thinks back to the visiting international performers Hat Fitz & Cara.

Every fortnight, Emma Chevarie of Music Runs Through It shares her love of live music. We talk about the shows she’s caught and the ones right around the corner.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

In this week’s episode, we explore the metaphysical nature of all things by not directly referencing anything other than music within the first segment, and then the next five segments that follow it, which will come as a shock to all of you who have experienced the format of this show before.

There’s a lot of chill tracks in here and a lot of tracks that will fire you up. The goal, here, though, is to make you just forget about an hour and enjoy something. Let these tracks sink in.

Or don’t.

Kiss The Sky – Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra
Shoulda Listened To Ya – Diemonds
Don’t Leave Me Here – Bloody Diamonds

The Lunchbox on History: The Acadians

Posted on 2019-08-16 by encaf1 Posted in NB History, The Lunchbox

Acadians have a long history in this province, and a loud and proud present.

My guest today is Chantal Richard, a professor at UNB’s French Department. She also worked on the new Acadian exhibit at the Fredericton Region Museum. She joins me to talk about a general outline of Acadian history, how the expulsion affected their culture, and how the modern Acadian spirit is alive and loud.

How much do you think you know about New Brunswick history? Personally, I think we do a pretty bad job of teaching it, and most people don’t embrace it. I’m on a mission to learn more, so I’ve invited a collection of historians to help me learn more about the legacies, the achievements, the battles, the inventions, the troublesome eras and the long past of one of Canada’s oldest regions.

Schedule updates 2019-08

Posted on 2019-08-13 by encaf1 Posted in Announcements, Schedule Updates

As summer winds down, we say goodbye to a few shows and welcome a few interim shows!

  • Steve Dunnett is back for August with a roundup of classic alternative songs on The Alt Vault (temporarily replacing The Bricolounge until September). FRIDAY 3pm, 1hr, music
  • Sounds From The Funky Kingdom & Beyond has passed on the horizon! We bid farewell to this award-winning show and host, and wish him all the best. Who knows: perhaps he’ll be back again someday! In it’s place, we’re listening to Boom Bap! MONDAY 7pm, 1hr, music
  • The Underground Sound promises to return with new shows in the fall, so in the meantime we’re keeping the theme and trying out the classic punk and hardcore show Retrospect. MONDAY 9pm, 1hr, music
  • Sappyfest has come and gone, but we’re going to get our post-rock groove on with The Sentinel’s Marvellous Kaleidoscope in a one-hour format. We may find a spot for the full two-hour show later! TUESDAY 8pm, 1hr, music
  • We’ve been delighted with the limited-series road movie that is REVISITATION, and the producer has promised another wander down the highway again next spring. For now, however, we introduce EarthMatters, serious talk about the world we inhabit. FRIDAY 2pm, 1/2 hr, spoken word
  • Ear Candy has closed up shop, so we bring you another sweet in it’s place: Folk Roots Radio, with country and folk songs to give you that nostalgic weekender. SUNDAY 3pm, 1hr, music

The Lunchbox Interview: Melissa Kennedy (Ink Artist)

Posted on 2019-08-10 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The shapes of nature are full of human expression, and when you can focus on those alone, magic happens.

During the summer, the city of Fredericton is hosting numerous artists and crafters each week at the Odell Park Lodge, to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. From time to time, we’ll check in with these artists on the Lunchbox to find out what makes their art move them.

My guest today is Melissa Kennedy, an ink artist who is exploring the intricate and surprisingly human elements of the Odell Park forest. She joined me on the porch of Odell Park Lodge to talk about her pursuit of art.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

You know, if we had 3 day weekends and 4 day work weeks, life would be essentially the same. Sure, less time at work, but then we’d all be looking super-forward to those 4 day weekends that we got once a month (Canada, I don’t know about other countries but we typically get one bonus day off a month [officially, anyway, min-wage jobs are great {Who even uses these kinds of brackets?}]) and then just go back to the old grind.

WHAT I AM SAYING: We easily build routines and can never be happy for long. If you disagree, then get your own radio show or something.

HitG 022: Character Death

Posted on 2019-08-09 by encaf1 Posted in Head In The Game

Roleplaying games allow players to vicariously experience heroic actions with high risk and high reward — but sometimes those actions might fail, or the opposition is either just too powerful or gets a lucky strike. So, for such a dangerous profession, death is likely a highly probably event.

Just us as we talk about what role character death might play in your games, how it can be a good or a bad thing, and how to handle it when it might be sensitive.

The Lunchbox on History: The Acadians of Pointe-Sainte-Anne

Posted on 2019-08-09 by encaf1 Posted in NB History, The Lunchbox

Before this city was named Frederick’s Town, it was known at Pointe-Sainte-Anne, but it’s a history that isn’t often explored.

My guest today is Stephanie Pettigrew, the Research Director of a new exhibit at the Fredericton Region Museum focusing on the Acadian residents of Pointe-Sainte-Anne. In particular, Stephanie tells us about the discovery of a personal family connection to a prominent local Acadian farmer and intermediary.

The Lunchbox Interview: Carol Harquail (Dressmaker)

Posted on 2019-08-09 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Art has the potential to encapsulate entire lifetimes in a single image, drawn from single moments imagined and expanded, composed out of strips of deconstructed cloth.

During the summer, the Fredericton Region Museum invites artists to work and demonstrate their art to visitors of the museum, bringing history to life. You’re encouraged to visit the museum for its slice of New Brunswick history, and then plan to spend time talking with the artists, just as we do on the Lunchbox.

My guest today is Carol Harquail, a native fibre artist who uses her skills with sewing and cloth to carry on a tradition of making clothing with meaning. She making (and helping others make) dresses steeped in tradition, from the healing jingle dresses to the updated traditional ribbon skirts. She tells me a bit about how the journey through dressmaking has helped her uncover traditions and cultural beliefs of her peoples, and how she expresses them through her creations.
