Maritime Metal and Hard Rock Festival celebrates 5 years

Posted on 2017-07-27 by Johnny James Posted in General, General Distortion

Maritime Metal and Hard Rock Festival enters it’s fifth year with a perfect sampling of the the east coast scene, with new faces and old favorites set to embrace the stage in Windsor.

Veteran bands Black Moor and Doom Machine will provide a strong veteran presence as both bands are coming off strong fourth-coming albums. Doom Machine celebrated their tenth anniversary with a double album of new music and re-recorded old favorites while Black Moor’s “Brave To The Grave” earned them “Loud Recording Of The Year” at Nova Scotia Music Week, their third album to do so. First time performers Lionsault picked up some hardware as well with their album “Are You Feeling Lucky”, winning “Loud Recording Of The Year” at the 2017 East Coast Music Awards. Last Call Chernobyl were also nominated for this award with their second full length album, which was their first since 2010. Generation Idiot returns for a second straight year along with festival regulars Dark Shrine and Tri City Villains who will both be back for their third while Last Kick will return for their fourth.

New to the festival this year is the high octane rock and roll of Aron Scott Earthquake from Prince Edward Island and the exhilarating death thrash of WinterHearth from St. John’s Newfoundland. Both of which are the only representatives from their respective regions, making this the first edition of the festival to include bands from all four provinces.

Festival promoter Jay Chetwynd has also opened the door to a more diverse line-up of sounds this time around. The melodic hardcore stylings of east coast favourites Sleepshaker leads a stream of diverse offerings such as sonic groove metal acts Brass Knucklhead and Monsters Are Human, funky alternative rock acts Dark Sky Parks and Electric Spoonful and the spit-in-your-face punk rock stylings of Keith Doom and the Wrecking Crew. The battle of the bands will also give some fresh faces the spotlight once again; competing this year are Dazor, Impact Eleven, The Dead Minutes, The Meat Sweats, and Luna Amour.

Check of the Maritimes’ signature metal festival for their milestone 5th year this weekend, July 28th and 29th, at the Exhibition Grounds in Windsor, NS.

The Lunchbox Interview: Robbie Lynn & Telina Debly (Notable Acts)

Posted on 2017-07-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

We all have stories to tell — from our lives, from our minds, from our hearts — and sometimes we get to share them in amazing ways.

My guests today are Robbie Lynn and Telina Debly, two of the participants in the upcoming 2017 Notable Acts Theatre Festival. Telina is acting in Hinter by Jean-Michel Cliche, and Robbie is directing Brainstorm (by Gordan Mihan) and acting in It Happened at a Party (by Caroline Coon). Both of them performed in the recent Bard In The Barracks performances, and we talk about the rapid process of learning these smaller, intense plays.

Notable Acts runs July 25-August 5 in multiple locations across the city, from theatres to streetside to libraries and parts.

Lindsay Foote LIVE at Grimross – A Review From Colin Fowlie

Posted on 2017-07-24 by Bondo Posted in Music Reviews

I’m not an authority on folk music. Most of my recreational listening consists of Americana and blues rock drenched in sludge, but there are a few universal truths in music that get me every time. Tight melody&harmony, honest songwriting, and a compelling live presentation. As such, the intent of this missive is to briefly review both the EP “Going Gone” and the live  performance at the Grimross Brewing Company on July 20th, 2017, by Lindsay Foote and her band.

I’m also not a suspense writer. I enjoyed the live performance enough that I went home and grabbed a copy of the EP, dug that as well, and felt the need to write about it.

First, I’ll discuss the EP “Going Gone,” released in March 2017. On the 5-track piece, Foote (Lead vocals, guitar) is accompanied by a talented cast comprised of Belinda Corpuz (Backing vocals), Eslin McKay (Violin), Malcolm Connor (Double Bass), and Chris Blachford (Guitar, backing vocals.) All 5 tracks are uplifting and singable. Overall the production is very well done. Everything is in it’s right place in the mix, and without a dedicated percussionist on the recording, it’s just imperfect enough to be perfectly human. Connor is a one-man rhythm section on the stand-up bass, and the embellishments by Blachford and McKay are tasteful – serving the songs with a delicate touch. The vocal harmonies are also spot on.

Experienced live, even with Corpuz absent from the lineup, the same vibe was very well represented. Being at Grimross, it was an intimate experience. It was as though a group of ringers had showed up to a kitchen jam and won over the skeptics. In 2-part harmony, the voices of Lindsay and Chris just WORK together. They kicked off the set with the lead track from the EP entitled “Found It” and had me hooked from the first chorus. The banter in-between songs was minimalist and humble, and the music had me always engaged and occasionally mesmerized. It took me by surprise.

If you are a fan of the Civil Wars, The Dixie Chicks, and/or Norah Jones, I am fairly sure you will find the EP “Going Gone” or a live performance by Lindsay Foote and company to be an excellent use of your time.

If you are a fan of Fugazi, you may also very much dig what they are doing, but I can’t predict that with nearly as much certainty.

You can catch Lindsay Foote and her band again in the Fredericton area on Saturday, July 29th, at the Tay Creek Folk Festival. They will most certainly make it worth the  price of admission.

Live footage shot by Roots & Soul Music Promotions at Grimross Brewing Co. July 20, 2017.

What’s CHSR Listening To? 2017-07-24

Posted on 2017-07-24 by Bondo Posted in What Is CHSR Listening To?
Mark Kilfoil – Program Director, host of CAFFEEN! and The WEIRD Show

This week, it was a real jumble of things, from the best of The Cars to The Standstills‘ Pushing Electric to the super-ambient Horizons by Christopher Willits. I’ve gotten several recent ambient/illbient albums I’m looking into, and started collecting Scottish music for Highland Radio.

Erin Bond – Station Manager/Music Nut, host of Homemade Jams, Her Turn, and Anything Goes

I originally listened to Spoon‘s Hot Thoughts when it was first released back in March, but I’m just getting re-visiting it now andgiving it the listen that it deserves. Such a fun record.

Tammie Hayward – Host of Instant Breakfast and De-Railed

This week my favorite new release is Gavin Simms from St. Johns, NFD. It is beautiful. His voice is really great and the harmonies are gorgeous. I have also been revisiting Stewart Legere‘s Quiet the Station for the same reasons. I guess I seem to get on rolls like that.

Chris Waddell – Music Director, host of The Crazy Train

The Lunchbox Interview: Jenny Mitchel (Bird City Golden Bus Tour)

Posted on 2017-07-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Some people travel to get away from their job, and others decide that traveling with their job is the best thing they can do..

My guest today is Jenny Mitchel, aka Jenny Omnichord, aka Bird City, a singer-songwriter traveling with her converted bus-as-performance-space to this year’s Sappyfest — and beyond! We chat on the phone about the songs that never quite went away and became her latest project Bird City, the converted school bus that provides her with accommodations and a performance space no matter where she goes, and multiple identities musicians take on to get stuff done.

The bus will be stopping in Harvey at the Harvey Curling Club on July 30 and performing with Joyful Joyful and Shopkeeper before continuing on to Sappyfest.

The Crazy Train Episode #CXVIII – MM&HR Feature #2

Posted on 2017-07-18 by Chris Waddell Posted in General, The Crazy Train

Maritime Metal & Hard Rock Festival #5 Preview

Yes, my friends only a couple weeks to go before I see you all in Windsor, Nova Scotia for the 5th year bash of the Maritime Metal & Hard Rock festival!

I decided to do another feature just to give a little more exposure to the bands and to you the listeners, so if there was maybe a band that you didn’t know of, hadn’t heard a song by them, you could listen in and go, “Oh man! That band kicks ass!!” and thus decide to go!

Also in Hour II, Ezra Seamone and his new guitarist Mike joined me to talk about the new band they are putting together. The guys are currently seeking a drummer, Bassist and Vocalist. I’ll put my name behind these guys. Mike’s an excellent guitarist and if you’ve heard ‘Soulstice’s’ song ‘Apocalypse’ it’s a testimony to just how great a budding writer Ezra is turning out to be. Both Mike and Ezra have a lot of heart, passion and drive for what they want to do musically.

Note that the next few episodes of the Crazy Train will be repeats or prerecorded shows. I’ll be away this weekend to our bassists wedding, then the Metal ‘fest in Nova Scotia, then Freedom ‘fest and on and on! Summer’s a busy time!

Here’s the playlist for Episode #118 of the Crazy Train
