What Is CHSR Listening To? 2017-06-25

Posted on 2017-06-25 by Bondo Posted in General, What Is CHSR Listening To?

What is CHSR listening to?

Roger Jean – Host of Rosie Morning weekdays 7am-8am; and @Rosie’s Juke Joint Saturday 8pm

Pokey Lafarge‘s Manic Revelations. A fun listen from start to finish. Playful lyrics and a great traditional roots sound with a very nice horn section. A great offering from a veteran artist who has found his road tested formula for writing and performing great songs.

Chris Waddell – Music Director and host of The Crazy Train Saturdays 6pm-8pm.

Hero’s Last Rite‘s Wasted Prayer. The title track from their latest release sets the tone for the entire album and that tone is a sonic assault!

Tammie Hayward – Host of Instant Breakfast weekdays 8am-9pm and De-Railed Fridays 4pm.

India‘s first self titled release from this fantastic band out of St. John’s NFL. Indie rock/pop. All around great release from this band. Also Whitehorse‘s Panther in the Dollhouse!!!!

Erin Bond – Station Manager and host of Homemade Jams Mon-Thurs 4pm, Her Turn Tuesdays 7pm, and Anything Goes Saturdays 9pm.

I’ve been fortunate to listen to a lot of great albums this week, one that really stood out was Portugal. The Man‘s new album Woodstock. Other recent albums I can’t stop listening to are Take A Rest from TORA and The Damn Truth‘s Devilish Folk. Lee-La’s vocals are a force strong enough to frighten you and fall in love with at the same time.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

We are back from the random hiatus caused by real life! Don’t worry, escape into this land of misinformation and self-entitlement by enjoying music for free by opening up those ear holes and accepting the word of song into your life!

That came off way more preachy than funny, but I’m going to allow it because I refuse to apologize for anything.

Solid tracks from the darkest, deepest depths of my archive. Or, maybe I just decided to put all of my music on one giant playlist, hit shuffle, and pull a bunch of tracks out to play this week.

Don’t judge! After seven years, I have a massive collection now. Enjoy!

Playlist:
Young Rival – Got What You Need
Freeze the Atlantic – Welcome Back To Nibelheim
The Holy Snappers – Straight To Hell / Ain’t Got A Dollar
The Pack AD – Los Angeles
Lionsault – Reckless
Rockyard – Don’t Come Back
Hot Wires – Howling
Napalmpom – What Do You Want Me To Say
Grim Dylan – Sea Sick
The Creepshow – Sinners And Saints
Fit For Rivals – Agent Orange
Arcane Saints – Juniper
Vulture Kult – Cyanide Hand Grenades
Bellusira – Cachango
Thera – With Frozen Lungs

May 26, 2017 – Ottawa based singer/songwriter Rory Taillon radiates power. Whether it’s through his tall stature or through his soaring voice, when Rory Taillon is nearby he’ll unknowingly steal your attention.

It’s early morning and even though Rory has already spent an hour live on-air he’s gracious enough to give another live performance in Studio D with Bondo. Together they chat about the festival he’s in town for, his love of craft breweries, and of course about his music and life on the road. Oh, and we’re treated to a Damien Rice cover!

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein & Tilly Jackson (Bard In The Barracks)

Posted on 2017-06-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

“Yet this my comfort: when your words are done,
My woes end likewise with the evening sun.”– A Comedy of Errors

My guests today are Len Falkenstein, Artistic Director of Bard in the Barracks, and Tilly Jackson, an actress involved in both productions for this year. Bard in the Barracks is the annual celebration and performance of Shakespeare’s plays, back again this year with a stupendous double bill: A Comedy of Errors and Richard III. We chat about each of the plays featured this year, about the challenges of staging two plays (on the same day, in one case!) and the approach for staging these classics.

Bard in the Barracks begins with the presentation of A Comedy of Errors in the Barracks, opening on June 22 and runs most nights until July 2; the production of Richard III in Odell Park starts fully on June 30, and runs until July 9. A new feature this year is the double features of both plays, featured on June 25 and July 2!

The Lunchbox Interview: Gerry Blom (Culture Expressions Festival 2017)

Posted on 2017-06-16 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The breadth and depth of a city aren’t just measured in physical size or economic weight, but can be considered by the diversity of cultures it contains.

My guest today is Gerry Blom, one of the long-time organizers and the Chair of the Cultural Expressions Festival and it’s Food Committee. The upcoming 9th edition of the festival takes as its theme the entire history of diversity in this country, rather than focus on an individual origin culture. We discuss this change as well as Gerry’s own history working to promote Dutch immigrant culture, and the many activities and especially food that volunteers create and present at the festival.

This year’s Cultural Expressions Festival starts on June 23 at 5pm until 9pm, and continues on Saturday from 11am until 9pm. The entire festival takes place in Officer’s Square unless the rain threatened to wash them away; in case of rain, it will be moved to the Capital Exhibit Centre.
