Another Night at the Harvest

Posted on 2017-09-17 by Rosie Posted in chsr, Rosie Morning, Rosie's Juke Joint

This evening, still riding the high from last night, we say goodbye to the 27th Harvest Jazz and Blues festival.  Two powerhouses of music, Steve Earle, and Colin James played to jam-packed venues in well above historical temperatures for our neck of the woods.

Steve Earle Shares his Message

Steve Earle hit the stage, and the crowd went wild before he uttered his first word. His face is as familiar as his style; patrons went in knowing what to expect and boy, did he deliver. The band shifted between instruments with the skill of buskers, started with all the usual band fare, and then tossed around a mandolin, violin, upright bass, harmonica, and maracas to shake things up – pun intended.

His music brings together elements of rock, country, gospel, and blues. His gruff voice and his tender impassioned lyrics, combine to take you to a simpler time, but a more complex message; a cautionary, yet somehow optimistic tale. Everyone wants to be a Rockstar, but it’s hard work. Steve Earle paid homage to the sacrifices of the greats in the title single of his new album, So, you Wanna be an Outlaw, and shared an energetic return to his roots with Harvest Jazz and Blues patrons; his special guests.

Colin James Just Came Back to Harvest

Opening for Colin James, Harvest Jazz and Blues goers experienced the National Reserve hailing from New York, NY. Singer and guitarist, Sean Walsh delivered a rich baritone vocal performance similar in cadence to Neil Diamond. With a full album in the works, the band exhibits the artistry of a hardworking, well-traveled group ready to take their vision to the next level.

Six-time Juno Award-winning, Saskatchewan born Colin James took the stage last night at the Moose Light Blues Tent. Fresh off his Blue Highways tour this Spring, Colin James has spent the summer making appearances at various festivals and fairs. It’s been two long years since his last sold-out show here at the Harvest Jazz and Blues festival, and audiences welcomed him back with open arms.

In the words of Howlin’ Wolf, “I just play blues for fun.” Colin James is one of those artists, born to sing the Blues. His performance Saturday night delivered a dichotomy; all the pain, struggle, and despair of the blues explored through a whimsical medium; the music has even the staunchest puritan hopping. With minimal effort, he won their confidence, and show-goers journeyed along with him for “the fun.”

Up-Close-And-Personal at Harvest Jazz and Blues

A scan through the crowds reveals patrons from tiny ear muffed babies, to one vivacious near-centurion owing her piece of the front row in the Cox and Palmer tent Friday night. There’s a little something there for everyone and no deviation from East coast charm. For the price of admission, even the largest venues at Harvest allow an up-close-and-personal experience with World Class entertainment of past, present and the rising star acts on the way.

The Lunchbox Interview: Keith Lyon (Oh No, It’s Friday)

Posted on 2017-09-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

When we look back on our lives, sometimes it’s the oddest of patterns we remember…

My guest today is Keith Lyon, on the occasion of his third book for children, Oh No, It’s Friday! Keith has been making books for three years, both as a passion and to aid in treatment of his mental illness. His third book relates tales of his younger brother’s rambunctious years, getting up to no good regularly on Fridays.

Keith’s latest book will have a book launch on September 23 at the Faith Baptist Church New Maryland at 7:30pm. He’ll have copies of the latest book as well as the other two previous books, and a special deal to get all three.

A Night at the Harvest

Posted on 2017-09-15 by Rosie Posted in chsr, Rosie Morning, Rosie's Juke Joint

Every year, the Harvest gets bigger and better. The acts may change, but one thing remains the same – good old Eastcoast hospitality and a love for Jazz and Blues which was self evident during opening night of the 2017 Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival!

Earthbound delight with fusion at Free Festival Kickoff

Patrons who ventured out to the Free Festival Kickoff were treated to a fusion of folk, funk, blues, and rock deftly drawn from acoustic instruments, Earthbound, made their Moose Light Blues Tent Debut at the 2017 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival. The family-friendly event featured a mix of the band’s original songs and a skillful cover of Levon Helm’s, Ophelia. The clever mix of genres offers a little touch of home to everyone.

Earthbound, comprised of songwriter/guitarist Dwayne Doucette, drummer/percussionist Mike Humble, and bassist Bob Fitzgerald, are 2014 Harvest Jazz and Blues Galaxy Rising Star winners. Their inaugural EP, Lettuce Turnip the Beet, received three Music New Brunswick Awards nominations and an ECMA nomination. Their latest offering, Ditch Flowers, explores themes of growth and introspection from personal and social perspectives.

Nashville’s, Muddy Magnolias’ First Canadian Show

Nashville’s, Muddy Magnolias, commanded the stage in their inaugural Canadian show as opening act for headliner Matt Andersen. A chatty crowd in a packed venue was no match for the powerful vocals of Jessy Wilson and Kallie North. Wilson, raised on soul and R&B, effortlessly belted to the four corners of the room. Music emanated from every part of her being as she moved, mesmerized around the stage.  North, a self-taught guitarist, pierced the night with her Delta inspired, soulful voice. The duo shifted effortlessly from lead to harmony and back across the genres together.

Broken People, their debut album, represents a musical journey into what would be an existential crisis if the whole world weren’t already on this path together. The pair mixed a selection of music from their album with blues classics such as Sam Cooke’s Bring it on Home to me and Freddy King’s Going Down. But the highlight, bathed in a teal glow the songstresses delivered in true gospel, spiritual flair, Down by the Riverside.

Matt Andersen Headlines the Moose Light Blues Tent to a Sell Out Show

Matt Andersen took the stage at the Moose Light Blues Tent to a sellout crowd on the 15th Anniversary of his Harvest Jazz and Blues debut along with backing band the Bona Fide. He delivered a mixture of personal hits, including the third track, Honest Man, from his latest album of the same name. Andersen dismissed the band after the fifth number and delivered two intimate, heart-wrenching solos, accompanied by only his guitar.

Joined on stage by fellow solo blues artist Chris Colepaugh, and blues veteran, Rick Fines, the trio gave a thunderous show of soaring twin neck guitars in an extended session listeners hoped would never end. The guitarists were accompanied, in no small measure by Newfoundland native, Chris Kirby. Whose keyboarding style was creatively reminiscent of the Doors’ Ray Manzarek.

Regarding the Worldwide attention on Andersen due to the countless accolades and awards he’s earned, the Harvest Jazz and Blues site proclaims, “he’ll always be Our Matt.” No matter where in the world an NBer may be, they’ll have Matt’s powerhouse vocals to bring them on home.

Song Review: Psychotropy – Synthesis

Posted on 2017-09-12 by Johnny James Posted in General, General Distortion, Music Reviews

Synthesis is our first look at Moncton tech-death band Psychotropy. The band is composed of vocalist Noah Arsenault and Metal Bukkake founders Jonathon Lurette and Chris Doucet. The track is a perfect representation of what the metal community on the east coast enjoys, wave after wave of blasts and the vile, finger-breaking riffs of extreme metal. The lyrical content is saturated with grotesque adjectives that inject images of mutant, cronenberg-esque creatures into your subconscious. Stopping only for well placed, witty samples of the films “The Thing” and “Slither”, the song contains zero filler and is propped up only by the talents of its two special guests, Alain Levesque and Alex Olmstead. Levesque brings the enforcement of his other band Mindless Viscosity to the table by attacking the songs riffs with intensity while Olmstead provides his solid yet aggressive bass tones which are status quo for him in his band Malixiria. Synthesis has a high IQ when it comes to song structure and Psychotropy is an intriguing new force in east coast metal. A can’t miss band through the rest of 2017 and into 2018.

A Balancing Act at UNB Fredericton! – By LCdr/Capc David Lewis, MSM

Posted on 2017-09-11 by Bondo Posted in CHSR News Bulletin, General

Working towards a college or university degree is a formidable undertaking. The time management challenges of academic studies, classroom lectures, practicum’s and labs leave little room for extracurricular activities. The constant effort is exhausting and the need for down-time can become significant. One University of New Brunswick – Fredericton student [and CHSR 97.9FM Board of Director] is managing these challenges as well as adding another unique set of demands. As a Naval Reservist, Matt Baxter has also immersed himself in a part-time career in Canada’s military.

Working on a joint honours program for History and Political Science, Matt is concurrently training to be a Maritime Surface and Sub-Surface (MARS) Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. MARS officers are the only officers who command and conduct the strategies, tactics and operation of ships, submarines, and combat information and weapons systems. He is also a member of ship’s company at HMCS Brunswicker in Saint John.

“I chose UNB because of their amazing History department, and the extensive programs they offer. I chose History and Political Science because of my interests and hobbies. Growing up in a military family I was always fascinated by military history, war movies, and building model warships. As for Political Science I have always been interested in world events, international relations and how nations work together, and how they work against each other,” he adds, “Fredericton is also my hometown so it was nice to move back and feel at home.”

Naval Cadet Matt Baxter is equally proud of his new Navy career. This summer he attended Basic Military Officer Qualification in Valcartier, Quebec and then flew to Victoria, BC to complete his MARS 2 course. “One of the best experiences so far would be the friendships I made on course. Since shipping out for the summer I have made some tight bonds with exceptional people from all over Canada during some of the most challenging days of my life. It can be tough but at the end of the day, the sail, or the course it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Back in school Matt continues with his commitment to studies. In his ‘spare’ time he runs and swims daily and is hoping to give the Woodsman team a shot this year. He will also keep busy as the UNB History Society President running lots of events, socials, outings, and department related activities. “Summer was great. I’ve had endless opportunities practically thrown at me for work, volunteering, and experiences while still maintaining good grades.” There is no doubt that NCdt Baxter’s discipline and determination will see him succeed. UNB and the Naval Reserve, have prepared him well.
