THE CRAZY TRAIN EPISODE #CXXII

Posted on 2017-09-15 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

Well I gotta say, it was great to be back doing a live show for you all, even made greater that I was joined by ‘General Distortions host Johnny James ‘Dio’ for the two hour special on this past July’s ‘Maritime Metal & Hard Rock Festival #5’.

In the first hour we played the interviews and some songs by the bands I met with and in hour II, we did Johnny’s bands and interviews.

A lot of the bands I spoke with, I asked if they used the government grants that can be accessed by provinces musicians and artists and their answers? Well you’ll just have to check out the interviews and the show itself to find out!

Here’s Hour I: Crazy Train – Ozzy Osbourne| Die In Style – Monsters Are Human +Interview| Blood Pudding – Aron Scott’s Earthquake +Interview| Planet Doom – Last Kick + Interview| Razor Slay – Brass Knucklehead +Interview with Scott Wild|

Hour II: Reunion – Anthesis| Weather Terrify or Unafraid – ’68| Blackened Sun – Get The Shot| Devil Finger – Hero’s Last Rite

Coming up in a few weeks I’m going to do a super craptacular, ultra, massive kick ass, super duper Retro Crazy Train!

It will feature some of the best of the best Metal acts from New Brunswick’s past, such as; Holy Order, Dreamkick, Vanderwolf, Hemlock, Power Syndrome and many more. If yer an old ass Metalhead like myself, you’ll remember many of these acts from the past that set the bar and broke the barriers of Metal & Hard Rock in the local bar scenes. I promise it’ll be a Crazy Train for the books!

Song Review: Psychotropy – Synthesis

Posted on 2017-09-12 by Johnny James Posted in General, General Distortion, Music Reviews

Synthesis is our first look at Moncton tech-death band Psychotropy. The band is composed of vocalist Noah Arsenault and Metal Bukkake founders Jonathon Lurette and Chris Doucet. The track is a perfect representation of what the metal community on the east coast enjoys, wave after wave of blasts and the vile, finger-breaking riffs of extreme metal. The lyrical content is saturated with grotesque adjectives that inject images of mutant, cronenberg-esque creatures into your subconscious. Stopping only for well placed, witty samples of the films “The Thing” and “Slither”, the song contains zero filler and is propped up only by the talents of its two special guests, Alain Levesque and Alex Olmstead. Levesque brings the enforcement of his other band Mindless Viscosity to the table by attacking the songs riffs with intensity while Olmstead provides his solid yet aggressive bass tones which are status quo for him in his band Malixiria. Synthesis has a high IQ when it comes to song structure and Psychotropy is an intriguing new force in east coast metal. A can’t miss band through the rest of 2017 and into 2018.

A Balancing Act at UNB Fredericton! – By LCdr/Capc David Lewis, MSM

Posted on 2017-09-11 by Bondo Posted in CHSR News Bulletin, General

Working towards a college or university degree is a formidable undertaking. The time management challenges of academic studies, classroom lectures, practicum’s and labs leave little room for extracurricular activities. The constant effort is exhausting and the need for down-time can become significant. One University of New Brunswick – Fredericton student [and CHSR 97.9FM Board of Director] is managing these challenges as well as adding another unique set of demands. As a Naval Reservist, Matt Baxter has also immersed himself in a part-time career in Canada’s military.

Working on a joint honours program for History and Political Science, Matt is concurrently training to be a Maritime Surface and Sub-Surface (MARS) Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. MARS officers are the only officers who command and conduct the strategies, tactics and operation of ships, submarines, and combat information and weapons systems. He is also a member of ship’s company at HMCS Brunswicker in Saint John.

“I chose UNB because of their amazing History department, and the extensive programs they offer. I chose History and Political Science because of my interests and hobbies. Growing up in a military family I was always fascinated by military history, war movies, and building model warships. As for Political Science I have always been interested in world events, international relations and how nations work together, and how they work against each other,” he adds, “Fredericton is also my hometown so it was nice to move back and feel at home.”

Naval Cadet Matt Baxter is equally proud of his new Navy career. This summer he attended Basic Military Officer Qualification in Valcartier, Quebec and then flew to Victoria, BC to complete his MARS 2 course. “One of the best experiences so far would be the friendships I made on course. Since shipping out for the summer I have made some tight bonds with exceptional people from all over Canada during some of the most challenging days of my life. It can be tough but at the end of the day, the sail, or the course it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Back in school Matt continues with his commitment to studies. In his ‘spare’ time he runs and swims daily and is hoping to give the Woodsman team a shot this year. He will also keep busy as the UNB History Society President running lots of events, socials, outings, and department related activities. “Summer was great. I’ve had endless opportunities practically thrown at me for work, volunteering, and experiences while still maintaining good grades.” There is no doubt that NCdt Baxter’s discipline and determination will see him succeed. UNB and the Naval Reserve, have prepared him well.

Album Review: Floodland – Static Walls

Posted on 2017-09-07 by Bondo Posted in Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

September 1, 2017 saw the release of Halifax four piece Floodland‘s highly anticipated full length album, Static Walls, the lush follow-up to 2015’s It’s The Fire. From the very beginning Static Walls pulls you in while giving you a little scissor kick to the gut. Throughout the whole record you get some punchy bass lines, bursts of guitar solos, and a whole lot of punky undertones; making Static Walls a great mix of airy “indie” ballads and energetic rock n’ roll.

The new addition of Victoria Cameron on bass (also of CAMERON, The Town Heroes, and Hello Delaware) treats us to sublime harmonies, different from what we’ve heard from Floodland before. Most notably on Sonder, Cameron’s dreamy backing vocals makes it perhaps my favourite song on the whole album.

Tangled comes with a music video and riffs that might excite you enough to accidentally kick someone while dancing. Decades shows off an epic guitar dual where everyone is a winner, Sun In Her Eyes show of Floodland‘s well crafted gang vocal ability, and songs like Scarce have Beatle-esque keys, showing that they wear their influences on their sleeve. Fiona, the closing song on the record, has a simple but catchy melody that will keep it in your mind all day long, like reminiscing a lazy summer afternoon.

Static Walls is available to purchase here, and Floodland will be playing Grimross Brewing September 23, 2017 with Hello Delaware, hosted by Roots & Soul Music Promotions.

The Lunchbox Interview: Kathryn Ciesielski (NBEX Innovation Hall)

Posted on 2017-09-05 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

It has always been the spirit of the Maritimes to innovate, but it’s still a hill to climb; it’s nice when someone offers stairs.

My guest today is Kathryn Ciesielski, Assistant Marketing Coordinator of the Fredericton Exhibition. She’s spent her summer working with colleagues to set up a brand new segment of this year’s New Brunswick Exhibition: the Innovation Hall. The Innovation Hall is a celebration and collaboration to support entrepeneurship, providing both a space for businesses to let clients know about their products and a challenge pitch competition for up-and-coming innovators.

The NBEX is taking place all week on Smythe Street at the Exhibition Grounds, and the Innovation Hall is on display all week from 3pm-8pm. The Pitch Competition starts Saturday morning at 10am.

Knack 2 Review

Posted on 2017-09-05 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Knack 2 Review.

Studio Japan & PlayStation brings us another adventure featuring the lovable relic hero in the Knack series. Created by the very talented team over at studio Japan and directed by Mark Cerny. Is Knack 2 a proper sequel, or should it have just remained a one hit wonder? Let us find out.

Story: In Knack’s all new adventure, we see the same heroes from the first game (Lucas, Ryder, Charlotte & Dr. Vargas.) In the beginning, the heroes uncover a statue of Harion, a hero who defeated the goblins and titans during the crystal wars. We find out that the high goblins and titans are coming back to life to destroy the human race. During our adventure, we make new friends and enemies, like Ava and Xander who have a monastery full of monks trained to fight against the goblins and titans.

Gameplay: Knack 2 is a platformer beatem up; through each level, you will punch, kick & jump. However, as you defeat enemies you can unlock new moves and powers. A lot has been added to the game play, which is nice, but is it enough? Let me start by talking about the added moves like the kick and the hook shot. These moves add a nice variety when it comes to the combat but once you figure out how to defeat a certain enemy you end up using that move repeatedly. Puzzles have also been added in Knack 2 while only a few are tricky, the majority of them can be figured out within a minute or two but they are a nice addition.

My thoughts: Knack 2 is what the first game should have been in the first place, with number two actually having platforming in it. I felt the combat became repetitive by the 12th chapter, I felt the characters were quite bland except for Lucas, Ava and Xander. However, I love what has been put into this game compared to the first one. The story is just long enough to keep me interested and is nowhere near as challenging as the first game, which is a good thing giving all the types of enemies.

Knack 2: 8/10

Good job PlayStation & Studio Japan
