The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein on Notable Acts [FULL SHOW]
Theatre is an ephemeral thing created at a time, in a place, between performers and an audience.
All of those things take many forms, but they are all connected by words.
The call for words has been made! The 15th Annual Notable Acts Theatre Festival will be accepting scripts until the end of April. The best of those will be transformed and solidified over the summer, resulting in their production for audiences in the end of July.
My guest today is all-round “theatre guy” Len Falkenstein. He teaches theatre and is involved in numerous ways with theatre in this city, but he’s here today to specifically talk about the Notable Acts festival, including the variety of things that can be done within the plays, a few words of advice to aspiring playwrights, and the specific forms and categories for the contest.
(BTW: turns out both Len and I were a little wrong on the website. It’s NBActs.com .)
Music today:
- Do you know All I Want? (It’s from the album No Problemo by No Aloha..)
- It’s time to Stop Making Excuses, or so says John Campbelljohn on his album Chin Up.
- Tick, tock, tick… Clock by Instruments from The End Of Light By Heat.

The Lunchbox Interview: Jean-Michel Cliche & Ryan Griffith from Next Folder Theatre on “Back To Zero”
When is a story created — when it is first written, or when it is first re-written?
My guests today are Jean-Michel Cliche (Producer/Director) and Ryan Griffith (Artistic Director/Playwright) of The Next Folding Theatre Company. Their latest production, Back To Zero, opens at the Black Box Theatre on Wednesday, March 9. They join me today to talk about how the play came to be (from a short story in progress), a mystery of a mystery, and what Back To Zero is generally all about (but no spoilers!).
Since it’s International Women’s Day, all of my musical selections are from women or female-fronted bands:
- Fool by Basia Bulat, from her album Good Advice;
- Mistakes by Roxy and the Underground Soul Sound from the album Puppet;
- And Somebody Somewhere by Amelia Curran, from her album They Promised You Mercy.

STU Lunchbox 2016-02-02: Shame & Fandom
What is shame — and why, oh why, do we do it? Do we have an epidemic of shame that the Internet makes even easier?
And do you squee over a particular TV show/anime/game/movie/comic book? Do you ever cosplay (costume play) as your favourite character? Are you carrying jewelry, books or clothing adorned with the best symbols of the best shows? Maybe you’re part of a fandom.
In the first half of the show, Ben Crouse takes a look at shame in the Internet age — and in the gym. And in the second half, Jordyn Meade-Baxter talks with people about their favourite things and fandoms.

Fundrive 2016!
CHSR’s annual Fundrive is here! This year we’re trying something a little different, we’re creating a Patreon campaign to help raise some much needed funds for Fredericton’s only campus based community radio station.
CHSR will also be present at the Boyce Farmers’ Market March 5th to promote community radio, plus we have a lot of other fundraising activities that you can get involved in.
- March 12, 2016 is the Fundrive Kickoff Show at Charlotte Street Arts Center. Show starts at 7pm, cover is $10 at the door, featuring Before the War, Richie Young Band, and Montgomery Street Band.
- March 13, 2016 we’re hosting a Tabletop Games Day in the UNB SUB’s Blue Lounge, located at 21 Pacey Drive. It’s free to attend, but donations will gladly be accepted. Fun for the whole family! Plus there will be homemade baked goods available to snack on.
- March 13th and March 19th we’re having a good ol’ fashioned Bottle Drive between 12pm and 2pm. Drop your refundables off at the entrance of the UNB SUB, 21 Pacey Drive! We’ll be there to greet you with a smile and a high-five. Have bottles but can’t drop them off? Tweet us @CHSR979 or send us a message on Facebook and we’ll make sure to get them from you.
- March 19, 2016 is our second annual Radio-A-Thon, broadcasting all day from 8am to midnight! Listen in over the airwaves (97.9FM) or stream us online for a full day of fun. No Nickelback pranks, we promise. We’ll be taking donations all day, so feel free to pop by CHSR and see what we’re about!
Wish to contribute to CHSR’s 2016 Fundrive campaign but can’t make any events? You can kindly donate online or mail in a donation.
Thanks for supporting CHSR 97.9FM for over 55 years.
