The Lunchbox Interview: Jakob Wildman-Sisk on The Millennial Dream [FULL EPISODE]

Posted on 2016-03-18 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-TheMillennialDreamEvery generation faces it’s challenges — and finds its opportunities. How do we identify this potential, and what can we do to help support great solutions?

That’s the subject of a new documentary and project by Greg Hemmings. He’s a filmmaker in Saint John who is currently screening his film The Millennial Dream, which is a look at how we update the classic “American Dream” of “live, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for the modern age. It’s also the beginning of a conversation and call to action to change how we live, work and play — how to take advantage of this generations opportunities to create and support solutions to current challenges.

My guest today is Jakob Wildman-Sisk. He works at the Pond-Deshpande Centre at UNB and has contributed to the philosophical research underpinning elements of this documentary. We talk about the goals of the project, the hope of the unique situation of New Brunswick to tackle the problems, and the chance to lead in solutions.

Music today:

  • After a late night with CIS Hockey, I’m having a little trouble getting going.. Luckily, Fossil Cliffs has a song from their self-titled album that will help: Wake Me Up!
  • You might think I’m criticizing the solutions, but I’m really criticizing the problem: Can’t Last by Traces (from their self-titled album).
  • Finally, what I wish for everyone: Fortunes by Metric from Pagans In Vegas.

Fire Emblem Fates Review

Posted on 2016-03-18 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Fire Emblem Fates

The next installment, and a very unique one at that, having 3 different versions for one game but keeping their classic top down strategy will make fans of the series, either long time or new comers, very happy with their purchase.
Story: You play as a Prince, starting off in a secluded fortress training with one of your older brothers. You are asked to run a mission which lets you meet up with your birth family and learn that you were kidnapped, afterwards you run into the “big decision” where you are to decide whether you will defend Hoshido with your birth family or will you side with the family who raised and cared for you since you were child. No matter the choice the story will be different and by the end you will question if you really did the right thing.

Gameplay: Fire Emblem has always been known for amazing top down strategy gameplay. This entry is no exception, with the addition to the ranged weapon triangle it might take a little to get used to new weapons aswell as the debuffs caused by kunai and knifes and shurikens. Now, the big difference is that Birthright is the easier version and will allow training with extra challenge missions to get your units and see them grow to a point you want them and allow them to reach a point you want them. Conquest on the other hand is much tougher and has no challenge missions so you are limited on your money and experience points. Every encounter counts, leaving you to use each unit at their absolute maximum.

In Conclusion: Fire Emblem Fates is an entry in the series that people will enjoy for a long time. I definitely recommend trying this game out, even if you decide to only buy one version of the game I think it will be likely that you will enjoy it and might even find new challenges with the upcoming DLC (Down Loadable Content).

HAPPY GAMING 😀

Halo 5 Review

Posted on 2016-03-17 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Master Chief is back for another adventure in the Halo series; with some new additions to his arsenal but is it all good? Let’s find out.

Story: Master Chief goes AWOL (absent without leave) away from Spartan Locke to find Cortana. Now you control two squads in this game Master Chief and his blue team. Now this threw me off a bit because Master Chief has always been a lone wolf when it comes to the Halo franchise. Spartan Locke which is accompanied by Fire team Osiris who are sent out to bring back Master Chief.

Game Play: For some Reason this recent installment of Halo seems to be a bit different in a good way to me. Instead of you fighting alone you have a party of soldiers you can command. I love being able to tell my soldiers to focus on the biggest enemy on the map while I take care of the smaller enemies. The team definitely comes in handy in this game because if you get injured you can call your team over to help you which happened to me a lot in this game. The battles in this game are really and intense and sometimes really hard especially from mission 13 to the end of the game I died countless times during these 2 missions; I only played the game on Normal difficulty I could not imagine playing it on the hardest difficulty. This game offers plenty of variety when it comes to guns because just about in every battle you have you run out of ammo and you must pick up an enemies weapon or else you will get obliterated.

Conclusion: Halo 5 is a great first person shooter experience with some new additions which made some things easier in the game like the gun battles. When you are in combat you feel like you are actually in a war with all that’s going on and all the bullets flying at you which get’s your adrenaline pumping. The Story in this game is a little bit Cliché and underwhelming. None the less the gameplay was a lot of fun.

Score: 8.5/10

Good Job 343 and Microsoft Studios.

The Lunchbox Interview: Gia Milani (All The Wrong Reasons) & Madeleine Berrevoets (NBCHG)

Posted on 2016-03-17 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-GiaMilani-NBCHGSometimes it feels like life is half about living, and the other half about living with regrets about the first half.. So: go plant something! 🙂

My first guest today is writer/director Gia Milani, whose debut feature All The Wrong Reasons won the Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is screening this evening on campus at Tilley Hall room 102 at 7pm sharp — free for students. We talked about how the film came about, the process of being both the writer and the director, and ongoing concerns about the limits to women entering the film industry.

My second guest is Madeleine Berrevoets, co-chair with the NB Community Harvest Gardens. They’re having an event this weekend called Bring On Spring — something we can all appreciate. We talk about the work of the NBCHG (from the seed bank to the community plots to workshops) as well as the work of those who join the gardens and plant their own, and a bit about the Sustainable Garden Expo event this weekend (Saturday from 1pm to 4pm at the St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 780 McEvoy Street) where you can meet with many different food-production organizations and people.

Music today:

  • In honour of the lazy snow accumulating, I played The Drift from The East Pointers from their album Secret Victory.
  • To carry us from one interview to the next, we heard the title track from Weird Waves by Minotaurs.
  • And with only a minute to spare, I fit in just a little tease of The Meds, with their song about Spring (not really): Be Right Back, from the album South America.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplett (Chromoduo + La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura)

Posted on 2016-03-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-Chromoduo-LontanananzaMusic is an art. Sure, there are plenty of rules that have been constructed around ways to create it, but part of the beauty of art is that it often transcends those rules — sometimes only slightly, other times enough to complete redefine the rules.

My guest today is Sarah Beth Shiplett with UNB’s Music On The Hill. She’s here to talk about two upcoming music performances this week, both of which break some rules to some degree: the transposed music for two classical guitars of Chromaduo (coming up on Wednesday night at 7:30pm) and the very avant-garde performance of La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura (on Saturday night at 9:30pm. (Both performances are at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Hall, UNB campus, Fredericton.)

Music today:

  • We start with a Fiddler’s Brawl, as performed by The Regal Beagle Band from their album … In Days Past;
  • Staying with a bit of a country vibe, we hear the classic-style Whitney Rose with the song Little Piece of You from the album Heartbreaker of the Year;
  • And, rapidly running out of time, we hear a little bit of When The Cows Come Home by Rattlesnake Choir off of The Prospector’s Curse.

The Lunchbox Discussion: Virtual Reality

Posted on 2016-03-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox Base2016The promise of virtual reality (VR) is that we’ll be able to step into worlds that we can’t visit in normal reality, and possibly have powers or be people that is entirely different. But will the reality of VR line up with expectations?

Join myself and Jesse and we kick around this and other topics, in a quite informal discussion on today’s show.

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein on Notable Acts [FULL SHOW]

Posted on 2016-03-10 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-NotableActsTheatre is an ephemeral thing created at a time, in a place, between performers and an audience.

All of those things take many forms, but they are all connected by words.

The call for words has been made! The 15th Annual Notable Acts Theatre Festival will be accepting scripts until the end of April. The best of those will be transformed and solidified over the summer, resulting in their production for audiences in the end of July.

My guest today is all-round “theatre guy” Len Falkenstein. He teaches theatre and is involved in numerous ways with theatre in this city, but he’s here today to specifically talk about the Notable Acts festival, including the variety of things that can be done within the plays, a few words of advice to aspiring playwrights, and the specific forms and categories for the contest.

(BTW: turns out both Len and I were a little wrong on the website. It’s NBActs.com .)

Music today:

  • Do you know All I Want? (It’s from the album No Problemo by No Aloha..)
  • It’s time to Stop Making Excuses, or so says John Campbelljohn on his album Chin Up.
  • Tick, tock, tick… Clock by Instruments from The End Of Light By Heat.
