The Lunchbox Interview: Richard Hornsby on Atlantica’s 3rd Stream Classical Goes Jazzy [FULL EPISODE]

Posted on 2016-02-25 by encaf1 Posted in General

LunchBox-AtlanticaJazzyOn the one hand: classical music.

On the other hand: jazz.

That’s how I typically think of those genres: related by being part of the body of music, but pretty much at extreme ends from each other.

But musicians don’t think that way. They combine, sample, cross-over and intermingle to produce new works all the time.

My guest today is Richard Hornsby, UNB’s Director of Music and member of the Atlantica quintet. He joins me to talk about Atlantica’s upcoming performance: “3rd Stream Classical Composers Go Jazzy”. We talk about the interesting crossovers that were created in the 50s between these two genres, the new work especially commissioned to combine those genres and poetry from Alden Nowlan, and more about music than I can possible put here..

Music today:

  • One can be forgiven, maybe, for comments about the weather today. Still, it seems terribly appropriate to play The Water Goes Both Ways by Run With The Kittens, from the album Casio Glue Bomb.
  • A classic piece of music reinterpreted by Joel Plaskett gives way to my interview: Hard Time, off his most recent album The Park Avenue Sobriety Test.
  • And a little jazz to end off the hour: Jason Roseblatt with the title track from his album, Wiseman’s Rag.

The Lunchbox Interview: Joshua Dickison (Fair Dealing Week) [FULL SHOW]

Posted on 2016-02-22 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-FairDealingWeekPlay fair.

It’s what’s told to you as a child, but somehow that lesson gets very complicated as you grow up. Fair to whom? What is fair?

When it comes to copyright, it’s even more complex and nuanced.

But this is the week to think about it — and learn more!

Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week is a North American celebration and awareness-raising campaign to make everyone aware of where the fair boundaries of use of intellectual property exist, and how they can be negotiated. My guest today is Joshua Dickison, UNB Libraries Copyright Officer. We talked copyright, Fair Dealing and some of the implications of using and creating intellectual property.

Music Today:

  • Every week seems to start this way, with a Monday. Maybe there’s a pattern.. We heard Start Over Again from Alana Yorke‘s Dream Magic album for clues..
  • Language Arts was my favourite class in intermediate school. (Along with Math, Science, French…). They are also an awesome band, who sing about a Neighbour on the album Able Island.
  • Green & Gold tell us that it’s important to Remember This, because The Body Knows..

The Lunchbox Interview: Lisa Steven (Harvey Bonspiel)

Posted on 2016-02-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-HarveyBonspeil2016There’s something uniquely Canadian about a sport that requires ice to play, and that we often build indoor ice to make sure it happens.

Add a rock and broom, and you’ve got curling!

My guest today is Lisa Steven, a long-time curler in Harvey and volunteer organizer with the upcoming Harvey Curling Club’s Annual Sheeler Bonspiel. She joins me to talk details about curling, about how she’s played since she was 12, and how much support this annual event gives to families dealing with cancer.

Music today:

  • We began a clean sweep of curling with Your House, from the album Proof of Life by Coyote.
  • One thing to avoid is an unresponsive gripper, or as Smokes puts it (from their album Zone Eater): a Dead Hand.
  • And I want everyone to enjoy their weekend: from Fortunate Ones, the title track of The Bliss.

The Lunchbox Interview: Ryan Gaio & Naomi K Lewis (Qwerty Reads) [FULL SHOW]

Posted on 2016-02-18 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-QwertyReadsWords are music, stories are songs, books are albums..

So why shouldn’t a reading also have a band?

My guests today are both involved in a reading-with-a-difference coming up this evening, at 7pm at The Wilser’s Room: Qwerty Reads, brought by the UNB-student-run Qwerty Magazine. Ryan Gaio is a first-year creative writing student at UNB and reader for Qwerty Magazine, and helped organize the event. Naomi K. Lewis is the current UNB Writer-in-Residence and author who will be doing a reading at the show tonight. We talked about creative writing at UNB, what a Writer-in-Residence really does, and about Qwerty Magazine.

Music today:

  • Tomato Tomato told us to Toss It All Away (by which, I assume they mean baggage..)
  • The Do Good Badlies slyly told us the opposite of the song’s title in Fear The Change (from Electric Nights).
  • And finally, we decide to just Let It Go by Earthbound Trio, as heard on the compilation It’s Always Sunny In New Brunswick.
