The Lunchbox Interview: Isabelle and Bianca on Identity Journey

Posted on 2015-12-04 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-IdentityJourneyWe all search for our own individual identity, but what about our collective New Brunswick identity? Does that even exist? If so, what does it look like?

That’s the question being brought up in the Identity Journey project. The first step is to ask young people in New Brunswick what they think the identity of people in this province is composed of. Then, Théâtre La Cigogne will take all their words and stage a production to show everyone who we say we are. I spoke with Isabelle and Bianca about the project, what they will be asking people to describe, and their hopes for the broader discussion of identity.

Music today:

  • French is part of our identity, so here’s a beautiful song sung in French by Coeur de Pirate called Drapeau Blanc.
  • We have misconceptions about our identity, but we have the chance to correct them, at least that’s what I took away from Little You Little Me‘s song If You Say It Ain’t So.
  • And Tortue will be on stage this Saturday, so let’s get started with Abe.

The Lunchbox Interview: Bryan Bailey on Dogs and Christmas

Posted on 2015-12-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-BryanBailey‘Tis the season for celebrating? But what about your dog?

I’ll admit: I’m not a dog-lover. Never got the hang of it, never felt entirely comfortable with canines. But I have plenty of friends who swear by their pooch, even though I see nothing but an incomprehensible, wild animal.

Turns out, looking at a pet dog as half wild animal isn’t such a bad approach. I talked with Bryan Bailey, author of “Embracing the Wild in Your Dog: An understanding of the authors of our dog’s behavior – nature and the wolf” and sometimes referred to as “The Wolf Whisperer” about dogs — specifically, how to handle your dog (or someone else’s!) around this wonderful holiday season.

Music today:

  • With winter coming sooner than most really like (always!), we will soon be calling for more Heat, just like The Town Heroes.
  • Or perhaps we’ll head down South for a Solar Escape, or is that what Kylo means?
  • Maybe we’ll just stay home and act like Animals, with our pets, and avoid having any In-Flight Safety films..

The Lunchbox Interview: Scott MacAfee on #smallacts, #bigimpact

Posted on 2015-12-02 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-SmallActsBigImpactWhat does it take to change the world?

Is it the ability to move mountains? Then, pick up a stone.

Is it solving world hunger? Then, feed someone.

Is it improving education? Then, teach someone.

Change in the world is not only accomplished by god-like powers to change things drastically — in fact, it mostly isn’t that at all. Really, it is the collective actions of billions of people which make all the difference. My guest today is Scott MacAfee of the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation, a group trying to solve the world’s problems on the local level, by changing what we all do. Their latest initiative is Small Acts, Big Impact. It reminds us that we not only make a difference in the world by our personal actions, but that these actions should be celebrated. We talked about the kinds of acts that are needed and what you can do, as well as the attempts by the organization to help celebrate those acts, either by retweeting on Twitter, highlighting them on Facebook, showing them on Instagram, or mapping them on their website.

So, the question is: what #smallact are you going to do to change the world, at least for one person?

Music today:

  • Reminding us of what we are missing, we heard David Myles‘ En Décembre from his double-album In The Nighttime.
  • And while it can be difficult don’t let the fact that It’s Awkward keep you from helping people, as we are all in this together (with Little You Little Me).
  • Everyone who lives around you is your Neighbour. We should help them. (We learned this in Language Arts, from the album Able Island).

Until Dawn Review

Posted on 2015-12-02 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Until Dawn is a survival horror game but with an interactive movie feel to it. Does this game scare the pants of us or leave us bored to tears in our seats? Let’s find out

Story: A year after two sisters disappear at a cabin in the mountains in Alberta there seven friends and brother go back to the cabin but what awaits them is a night of living hell. You take control of seven college students or high school students each of them either has a crush on someone or has there significant other with them and with any situation like this there is some drama. Each of these couples are using anyway they can to get away from the others to other kiss, make out or even have sex. Shortly after all these teenagers get up on the mountain they notice strange things occurring up on the mountain whether it be a window opening by itself or a friend being murdered. The outcome of the game depends on the decisions you make in simpler terms they say it’s the butterfly effect.

Gameplay: You play this game like an interactive movie now there have been other games that do this for an example: heavy rain and beyond two souls. But none of those games do it like this one there is something so special about this game. As you take control of each character you find different clues about different things like about the two sisters who had disappeared a year prior to the current story there are a few other stories that play in to hand which I will not spoil. But as you go along in the story you find these totems that are marked by Danger, Death, Guidance, fortune. When you’ve collected all these they tell a very big story within the game (Spoiler).

Verdict: This game is truly something special in the gaming industry I have never played a game like this in my life as far as the horror goes I had jumped so many times while playing this game and I even screamed twice quite loud I must say. There was just something so unique about this game that I hope they do more and when I began playing it some sometimes I got too scared to go on for a bit or I could not put the controller down because I wanted to see what was going to happen in the story. This game most definitely has replay ability to find out the different outcomes in the story and to see what else you can find in the story.

I am giving this game 10/10 for the uniqueness of the game and replay ability to it.

Until Dawn: 10/10

The Lunchbox Interview: David Alston, Entrepreneur

Posted on 2015-11-27 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DavidAlstonSome people just go hunting for trouble.

They can’t help it! They love the puzzle of a difficult task, the challenge of the thing everyone tells them is impossible, the struggle of scaling a daunting wall of possibility, the elation of reaching the pinnacle or the satisfaction from learning something new on failure.

I’m talking about entrepreneurs, that special breed of business person who loves to troubleshoot and build, combining savvy, intelligence, creativity, team-building and good timing to make things.

My guest today has been recognized as one of the best in the region. David Alston is currently the Chief Innovation Officer at Introhive, and recently was awarded one of two Startup Canada Awards for the NB Region. We talked about what it really means to be an entrepreneur, how he started as one of many and became the one in the lead, and opportunities to pursue it as a career.

Music today:

  • I thought it was Lisa Leblanc telling me You Look Like Trouble (But I Guess I Do Too), but it was actually Lionsault front and centre with Shoot ‘Em Up. (I played a bit of Lisa Leblanc toward the end, and will put some in the next episode.)
  • I’m pretty sure it was Little You Little Me after that, but it’s hard sometimes to hear with so much Racket In My Brain. (That song is from their imminent release, I’d Watch The Day Til It Died.)
