The Crazy Train Episode #LXXV

Posted on 2016-02-08 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

newCTlogo_03012015Episode # 75 – In HOUR I, ‘The Buzz Man’ and I had a visit from Eric Chase of ‘Civil Defence’ on the show to talk about their latest recording session with Underground Alliance’s Jake Duffie. We played two brand new tracks from ‘Civil Defence’ and had a great chat. The show also featured the first part of an interview that Johnny James ‘Dio’ did with members of ‘Hero’s Last Rite’, Saint John NB’s ‘No Man’s Throne’ and from Halifax, members of ‘Chaos Theory’. The second half of the interview will be played on this upcoming weekend’s Episode #76. We took time to pay tribute to three of the bands nominated for this years ECMA in the ‘Loud’ recording category. So we just want to congratulate once more, Moncton’s ‘Shades of Sorrow’, Halifax’s ‘Dumpster Mummy’ and ‘Chaos Theory’. Best of luck to all the bands! It’s just too bad they all can’t win!

In Hour II, we had a Global Metal from (list will be coming up soon)

The Lunchbox Interview: Melanie Madore (Earthbound Living)

Posted on 2016-02-05 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-EarthboundLivingThere are a lot of products that are local, natural and good for you — but they’re all over the place!

Wouldn’t it be good to find a one-stop place to find all these products, especially if you knew that a lot of them were made right here in the province?

My guest today is Melanie Madore from the new web-based good-living store called Earthbound Living.  They opened up in November of last year to offer a focused way to find great natural, eco-friendly, upcycled, recycled and otherwise good-for-you products from beard oil to baby cream, clothing to handmade cutting boards.

Music today:

  • On the day of a growing snowstorm, let’s think about the warm weather we just had, and will have.. We heard Come Spring by Keegan Dobbelsteyn by the album of the same name.
  • Because the idea of responsibility for earthly stewardship and recycling are on my mind, we heard Reap What You Sew by Brother Neil from Bonfire Confessions.
  • And to wish you the best for the weekend, we heard Reversing Falls from their new album 2: Waste Some Time.

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein, Brittany Long & Jessie Roy on “Age of Arousal”

Posted on 2016-02-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-AgeOfArousalTheatre is in the realm of “collective illusion”: the walls of the room dissolve, the stage vanishes, the playwright whisks the audience away to another place and another time, and the actors and actresses transform to new people — or sometimes, old people.

My guests today are Len Falkenstein (playwright, director, theatre guru, as well as Director of Drama at UNB), Brittany Long (theatre student, actress) and Jessie Roy (theatre student, seamstress and actress). Theatre UNB is doing a performance of Age of Arousal by Canadian playwright Linda Griffiths, so we chat about becoming older women, creating the costumes of the Victorian Era, and how typewriters can be sexy. Listen for the sneak peak at one of the gin-inspired moments of the play!

The Lunchbox Interview: Ali Husseini, Researcher at IBME

Posted on 2016-02-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBoxIBMEThere are two prominent images of artificial limbs: one, the pincer claw, is barely above the classic pirate hook; the other, the fully articulated cyber-mechanical arm, such as what the Terminator carries under his fake skin.

The truth is somewhere in between..

I spoke with Ali Husseini, a research assistant at the Atlantic Clinic for Upper Limb Prosthetics at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering from UNB Fredericton. We talked about the reality of prosthetics, the great role the clinic plays at both the local and national level, and the kind of inter-disciplinary research that goes on at the Institute.

(The Institute is always looking for volunteers to help with studies — both those who are in need or use prosthetics as well as those with normal limb operation — to help better understand how the human body moves. Listen for calls for research looking for assistance on The Lunchbox.)

The Lunchbox Interview: Ryan Griffith on “Returning Fire”

Posted on 2016-02-02 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-ReturningFireTNBTheatre is communication.

Texting is communication.

Can you combine the two?

The answer is clearly a yes, given the new production coming out this week. Returning Fire is a collaboration between Theatre New Brunswick and Next Folding Theatre Company. In this play, the first chapter is entirely communicated through text messages — on which the you, the audience, eavesdrops over the course of a few hours. In the end, you meet the characters in person, in a real place, in real life. The play was written by today’s guest, Ryan Griffith. Join us as we talk communication, theatre, and disembodied characters.

Music today:

  • Empress Of tells all about snow of a different form: Water, Water, taken from the album Me.
  • You may have yours soon, but It’s My Turn Now (so says Tommy Green Jr).
  • Apropros of nothing (and everything), it’s Old Man Leudecke telling us of The Girl In The Pearl Earring (found on his most recent album, Domestic Eccentric).

The Crazy Train Episode #LXXIV

Posted on 2016-02-02 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

newCTlogo_03012015I made it back alive from my ‘stay-cation’ in Saint John house sitting my Brother’s place. Thanks to Steve ‘The Buzz Man’ Dunnett for filling in for me on Episode #73!

Episode #74 had a bunch of great new tunes! Dischord was in town Friday night for their CD release party with Hero’s Last Rite and Spinesplitter. We played an interview that Roger Jean and I did the morning of their show at the Capital and talked to Luc Gagne about ‘Epitaph’ their 3 song EP they released in Janurary. Since the EP is only about 20minutes in length, we played the whole thang! ‘Epitaph’ a 3 song EP about the rise of ‘Communism’ in Russia is certainly a step up for Dischord a band well known in the Atlantic provinces for their Extreme Thrash Metal sound that includes the vocals in what I call ‘Demonic Harmonies’. Make sure you grab a copy where ever you can find the EP! Dischord.ca

The Wasteland Zombies let loose their rerecorded version of ‘Spread Your Wings’. The song originally recorded in 1994 and part of the bands album ‘The Town Fair’ was rerecorded at Underground Alliances studios with Jake Duffie at the helm. The band will be playing THIS Friday, February 5th at the Charlotte Street Arts Center with the debut of Fredericton’s newest ‘Punk’ band ‘Winter’s Howl. The bill also includes ‘Blueprints’ who’ll be playing new material and ‘Siegebreaker’ who also just recorded with Jake Duffie and will be playing new material including a brand new song never played live. Show starts at 7PM and Cover is only: $5!! Help support your local Metal scene and if you can’t make it yourself, then I know all the bands would very much appreciate it if you shared the event on Facebook.

The Wasteland Zombies   Siegebreaker   Blueprints

In Hour II we had a special ‘South of the Border’ feature. Local sludge Metal masters ‘Hard Charger’ just returned from playing a slew of dates in Mexico and so we started off Hour II with a track from them and then we played some tracks from a couple of the bands they played with on their Mexican tour and also I played some cuts from 3 albums that Ciaron Lewis of Neighborhood Watch fame, brought back from his working trip to Mexico.

Episode 74 Playlist:

Hour I: Crazy Train-Ozzy| Interview with Luc Gagne of Dischord| Epitaph EP- Dischord| Cold Black Eye-Siegebreaker| Spread Your Wings-The Wasteland Zombies| Rebirth – Blueprints| Fallen – Muted Pitch| Generation Genocide- Chaos Theory|

Hour II: Total Fucking Blackout – Hard Charger| Fight For Survive – Hatewolf| Carne A La Hoguuera – Active Pump| Descarnada – Tu Carne| Trificante De Organos- Tu Carne| Ba Aba Al Kisin- Coaccion| Catarsis- Coaccion| El  Negociano De La Piel- Alfonzosayas| Y Salimos De Les Sombras – Alfonzosayas| Party On, Party Off- Aggressive Conspiracy| Cosmic Canabalism – UuBbUuRrUu| Pheonix Lights- Striker| Mummy Dust- Ghost| Hail The Apocalypse – Avatar.

Coming up on this weekends Crazy Train, I’ll be joined by Eric Chase from Fredericton’s ‘Civil Defence’ and he’ll be updating us on what they’ve been up to and what’s coming up for them in the next few months

If you have a show coming up or you have a band, know of a Canadian Indie Metal band we should be playing, by all means let us know! You can email your events or bands tracks to musicdirectorATchsrfm.ca

NOTE! This weekends Crazy Train will air live at 4PM as CHSR will be broadcasting the UNB Red’s hockey game!

The Lunchbox Interview: Paula Tozer & Debbie Edmonson (The Death Cafe)

Posted on 2016-01-29 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Have you ever had a serious thought about death?

It’s a topic most of us avoid, but it’s a reality that all of us will face. Talking about it can help to take the stigma away, and help us to plan to live our lives our way, and then die our way again.

My guests today are Paula Tozer and Debbie Edmonson, two people from very different backgrounds but who share questions about death and have brought an event to the city to invite others to talk about it as well: The Death Cafe.

The Lunchbox Interview: Tim Yerxa (The Playhouse)

Posted on 2016-01-29 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Fredericton has had a very active theatre community for decades, and one of the centres for much of that has been The Fredericton Playhouse. A wide variety of events are held there, too, beyond theatre and including musical acts, ballet, comedy, and more.

But while the outside of the building and the main theatre always impress, the reality is: it’s in trouble. The building is aging badly under the curtains, and will need to be replaced.

My guest today is Tim Yerxa, the Executive Director of The Fredericton Playhouse. We talk about the great work that has been done at the Playhouse over its 50-year life, the problems they have been dealing with for a while, and the ambitious future of new theatre and community centre buildings that are planned for the future.
