The Lunchbox: 2020-10-23: No Bologna, It’s The Weekend!

Posted on 2020-10-23 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • Like it or hate it, and despite the fact that it wasn’t first, it’s undeniable that iPod Day marks a time of change in modern media consumption.
  • Pour one out (and then think about next year’s parties) for Event Organizers Day.
  • And fry one up for Bologna Day. (Somebody explain why it’s pronounced “baloney”?)
  • We remember that in 1918, Canada had hit a peak for the Spanish Flu, with 55,000 people dead from that previous pandemic.
  • This is the last Sunday to see the show called Attending The Apocalypse at the UNB Arts Centre with two exhibitions: Jennifer Lee Weibe‘s Scratchcards for the Apocalypse exploring language and our understanding of content in a series of canvases painted with tweets made by Donald Trump since 2015; and Janice Wright Cheney explores the symbolic power of mushrooms and the potential for mycelia to reshape our society. To book your time to see it, visit the UNB Art Centre site.
  • To give you an idea of Jennifer Lee Weibe‘s art, I pulled out my 2018 interview with her about her then project, Abstract 1-12.
  • And we revisit my chat with Cat Candow from this summer’s Artist-in-Residence series.
  • I’m thrilled that some of the thrills of the season are still around!
    • APEGNB’s Haunted Tour #2020 edition is a go! From October 26 through 31, 6pm to 11pm each night, get your Halloween experience! Of course, the APEGNB haunted Tour will look a little different this year – but it will still have wicked frights, terrifying animatronics, creepy basement (as per usual), and an amazing lightshow like you’ve never seen before!! There will be no auditorium holding zone, tickets will be sold in bubbles, and patrons will be asked to arrive at A VERY SPECIFIC time. 🙂 Tickets are for bubble groups only. You will get your time for your ticket, and you must be there on time. COVID precautions will be in full effect, including masks and hand sanitizer.  See the Eventbrite link for more information or for tickets.
    • The Haunted Hike has returned, for a limited time: from October 22 to 24 and from 29 to 31, 7pm each night. Gather at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Amphitheatre for the tour. See the Calithumpians Facebook page for more details.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-19: Question Today (Change Later)

Posted on 2020-10-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On the show:

  • I know Mondays make us all question what we’re doing, but this week it was also Evaluate Your Life Day. If that’s too hard to handle in general, just relax a bit with Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day.
  • As part of the process of questioning everything, I returned to my 2016 interview with Jakob Wildman-Sisk about the release of the documentary Millennial Dream.
  • And as a related palate cleanser for looking at things differently, I brought out my interview from this summer with Emily Kennedy, who was in Odell Park this summer to look at composing electronic music with natural sounds.
  • The dinner theatre at the Crown Plaza-Lord Beaverbrook continues this week, but with an altered schedule. “We’ll Meet Again” will now be opening on  November 3, so you haven’t missed it! And the opening of “Know Brunswick?” was moved from last week to this Wednesday night at 5:30pm. Think you know New Brunswick? Well you don’t… know, “Know Brunswick!” An interactive “Game Show” in which the audience will help the contestants answer regional trivia questions and award their favourite contestant with points to help them win the grand prize… a one way ticket out of this province! A blend of stand-up comedy, trivia, improv, and maybe a little serious scripted drama thrown in?! Herbert The Cow Productions in conjunction with Maxwell’s brings you this dinner theatre, which includes a 3-course meal for a bubble table of up to 4 people.

News update:

  • New Brunswick Public Health reported five new cases of COVID-19 and one new death yesterday afternoon.
  • Psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Holly took the stand in the Matthew Vincent Raymond trial Friday.
  • 211 NB is now accessible across New Brunswick.

  • The RCMP is asking the public for help locating a missing Moncton man.
  • A new student-friendly food delivery app has made its way to Fredericton.
  • And four cabinet ministers and the NDP have requested an emergency debate in the house of commons over a treaty dispute between commercial fishermen and Mi’kmaq fishers.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-16: We All Need To Eat

Posted on 2020-10-16 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • The fact that it was World Food Day has much more than just what’s for dinner. We need to consider how our food gets to us, and gets to everyone fairly.
  • It was also Department Store Day, which we can all celebrate by… Well, I’m not sure, but probably not by going to a department store, anyway.
  • This was also a day to remember an icon. It’s hard to argue that Steve Jobs didn’t have a great impact on our modern world.
  • Saturday is going to be Spreadsheet Day, so Let’s. Get. Ready. To. CALCULATE!
  • More importantly, this weekend includes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Donate to a food bank, support initiatives for affordable housing, consider arguments for universal basic income.
  • Along those lines, we revisit my talk with Kelsey Rusk in 2017 about the 50th Anniversary of Meals on Wheels.
  • And I had a great talk with Sarah Sarty this summer about her rediscovery of old photography techniques.
  • Finally, because I had some time, I brought forward a pick from Bondo from last year: Hey Major with Brother.
  • The Silver Wave Film Festival is virtual this year! From November 5 through 11 you’ll get a chance to indulge in a plethora of local films from the comfort of your own chair. See the website for more details.

Donations welcome. In the immediate future, Wildly Romantic by Norm Foster was presented on October 15 at 7:30pm, and Blue Birds by Vern Thiessen is coming up on October 18 at 2pm.
  • This weekend, you can get a little spooked by heading to the Sleepy Hollow Haunted trail in Keswick. Full COVID-safe protocols will be observed, including masks, social distancing and small groups. This is a HIGH SCARE event, so no little ones. Tours will be on schedule at the appointed time; this year appointment times are given from 7pm to 10pm. • Don’t forget you can still Attend The Apocalypse this Sunday at Memorial Hall, UNB Campus to see these two presentations: Elysium, by Janice Wright Cheney exploring the symbolic power of mushrooms and the potential for mycelia to reshape our society; and Scratchcards for the Apocalypse, Jennifer Lee Weibe explores language and our understanding of content in a series of canvases painted with tweets made by Donald Trump since 2015.
  • Prepare to laugh with Comedy Night with Jimmy MacKinley & Paul Lewis at The Charlotte St Arts Centre at 7pm (doors open by 6pm)

The Lunchbox 2020-10-09: Spend A Long Weekend At Home

Posted on 2020-10-09 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • On the food front, lots to celebrate today: Egg Day, Beer and Pizza Day and Moldy Cheese Day. Two of those are divine. The other is for… others to enjoy.
  • It’s also Fire Prevention Day, although it’s really Fire Prevention Month. Or, as I like to think about it: “Let’s not start fires we shouldn’t want.”
  • And finally, it’s World Post Day. Write a letter to someone. No, not an email. A real letter. As in, pen or pencil on paper. Your own words, your own handwriting, your own thoughts. Send it in the mail. Imagine what it would be like to get that yourself!
  • Saturday is World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day. The world is a tough place for all of us right now, but remember that there are those for whom the world has been even tougher, and will continue to be tougher, and for longer. You can help. Find organizations to give money or time to, and give thought and kindness where you can.
  • It’s also SHIFT10 Day on Saturday, which suggests that you need to take care of your own community right around you by doing something really simple: spend 10% of your purchases right here. Buy a gift, go out to a restaurant (or order takeout), get that something you’ve been eyeing for a while for yourself. Do it here, and it stays here.
  • Sunday is Coming Out Day. This would normally be Thanksgiving weekend; well, alright: it still technically is, but normally we’d be gathering in our family or friend groups for a meal and shared time. That plan has been put on hold for the moment, but you can still reach out to friends and family, and be aware and supportive if someone tells you who they really are on Sunday.
  • And finally, Monday is Thanksgiving Day. This year, perhaps more than ever for this generation, we need to give thanks for what we have, and appreciate everything. We now know how easily it can change, and what we will miss when it’s postponed. It’s also Native American Day in the United States, but I think we can also acknowledge the heritage and history of the native peoples in New Brunswick, and pledge to work together to make life better for all of us.
  • In 2017, I was joined in studio by musicians and friends touring under their own performances and the band name of Inland Island. Despite being from far-away Montreal, we discovered a mutual acquaintance, showing just how close we really are. From the album released in 2016 called Zsa Zsa’s Window Opens Slowly, we’ll also hear Rake and Family.
  • And the latest Real Life Survivor that we spoke with is Karen Richardson, in the winter of last year.

Events:

  • A reminder: masks will be required in all indoor events, as we act in safety and prevention to keep COVID from spreading.
  • Homegrown are playing at Dolan’s Pub tonight and Saturday night at 9pm.
  • Gin & Jazz with music by Bridge will be happening on Saturday evening at 7pm at Southside Shake in the Hilton Garden Inn, downtown on Queen St.
  • Braden Lam will be holding his album release party at Grimross Brewing on Saturday evening at 8pm, alongside with Atlas.
  • There will be an artisan’s market at Kings Landing on Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Rain date is Sunday.
  • Food at the Ex continues this week, with 9 vendors! Open on Fridays from 11am to 7pm, Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
  • The North Side Creators Market will be open as usual this Saturday from 8am-2pm at Picaroon’s Round House. Remember to spend at least 10% of your whole purchases locally!
  • And with another weekend comes another chance to find yourself Attending The Apocalypse! The presentation at the UNB Art Centre (Memorial Hall) is open on Sunday from noon to 5pm. Remember: you must book a time ahead of time, as only 4 people will be allowed into the exhibit at a time, and for only 20 minutes at a time. Entrance is free, however.

News update:

  • Premier Blaine Higgs announced yesterday face masks are now mandatory in all indoor public spaces starting today.
  • Testimonies within the Matthew Vincent Raymond trial were on hold until this morning.
  • It’s a good time to replace those smoke alarms in your kitchen with this year’s National Fire Prevention Week.
  • A man from Moncton has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting incident in Dieppe last November.
  • Blood donors are wanted ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend this year.
  • Fredericton is reopening two of its arenas to allow limited public skating and walking tracks for the first time since COVID-19.
  • Moonshine Creek Distillery announced it will release Chicken Bones Liqueur for the 2020 holidays.
  • And Netflix subscribers are about to pay a couple of dollars more to stream their favourite originals.
