  • The Midway rides are back! East Coast Amusements has rented space at the New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition.  ECA is following all COVID-19 protocols and has been approved by the province. Without a source of income ECA could potentially go out of business leaving the NBEX without rides for future fairs and exhibitions. Hours are Friday July 17th 12pm – Close; Saturday July 18th 12pm – Close; Sunday July 19th 12pm – Close; July 23-26 Hours to be determined.
  • No Masks – Enough is Enough protest
On Sunday at 3pm, people are asked to go to Wilmot Park to March to the Legislative Assembly, calling for the end of masks. I urge you to go — and wear a mask, and protest against the foolhardiness that puts minimal personal comfort over maximal public safety and health.

Why wear a seatbelt? Aren’t casts terribly inconvenient? Why have an emergency exit? We’ve been lucky, we’ve been diligent, we’ve taken precautions — and yet there are outbreaks, due to human error or bad luck. The virus isn’t even half-way done with the world yet. Have patience — or become the next patients. Be careful — or you become careless. Take a little discomfort to prevent discomfort, illness, permanent damage or even death. No one likes wearing masks, but by wearing them now, you won’t be wearing them forever.

Wishing the virus away doesn’t work. Wearing masks, the very least you can do to save everyone else, helps. Not gathering in groups, being aware of your own symptoms, supporting the organizations and researchers and health professionals and leaders who are working to find a vaccine and find therapeutic treatments, that’s what you can do.

But protesting about being uncomfortable supporting even the least you can do? You look childish and selfish. You look manipulated and unfeeling. You look vulnerable and ignorant.

Hide all that — with a mask.
  • Today, we enjoy my chat yesterday with members of the Fibre Arts Network (FAN) who have been in residence at Odell Park this past two weeks. Jackie has been working on embroidery (see her Instagram page); Caroline is a (rug) hooker (see her Instagram page); Karen is a weaver (see her Facebook page); and Renata is working on textile design (see her website). Another member, Darcy, is working on quilting, but we weren’t able to connect with her in time (see her Etsy page).
  • We also include a couple of songs: Don’t Get Me Started from Sleepy Driver’s new album; and the song Heroes by Wicked Vices.

News update:

  • New Brunswick Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
  • A program offered by the province that aims to support and mentor women in apprenticeable trades has been extended.
  • One of the largest employers in McAdam is halting production at its gypsum wallboard plant by next month.
  • A judge in Saint John sentenced a Newfoundland man to three years in prison on Wednesday following child pornography charges.
  • Codiac RCMP is still on the lookout for a missing teenager from Moncton.
  • Thanks to a large research grant, staff from the University of New Brunswick will pursue 13 projects related to COVID-19.

The Lunchbox 2020-07-15: History In The Making

Posted on 2020-07-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • My sincere apologies. With my world in flux (like most), I’ve lost track of my typical research patterns for events, and completely spaced on this week being Pride Week. I’ve added this week’s events to the calendar, and wish all the best love and support to LGBTQII2+ folks!
  • It’s Tapioca Pudding Day. Life doesn’t always need to be complicated.
  • Speaking of Pride Week, tonight at 7pm you can join the Queer Heritage Initiative of New Brunswick for an evening of education with Karen Pearlston and Veronica Moonstream WolfEagle. Connect on Zoom or watch on Facebook live!
  • Don’t forget that tonight and Thursday night are two nights of Comedy at The Cap with Jimmy MacKinley and guests. Tonight’s show is already sold out, but you might get lucky for the second show they added on Thursday.
  • On Thursday night at 6pm, attend an Open Panel and Discussion on Trans At Work with Indigo Komiwonuhke Poirier and Corey Hunter. See the Facebook event for more details.
  • Don’t forget that it’s Christmas in July! Visit the Delta Drive-In this week to see “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on July 17 and July 18).
  • Shameless are set to take the stage at Dolan’s Pub on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
  • On Friday afternoon, take in great food outdoors with Fredericton Al Fresco and catch Peter Hicks (of Sleepy Driver)! Tune in on Thursday’s show for a chat with Peter about the new collaborative album, Northeastern Chorus!
  • Tortoise, The Hare & The Millionaire had to miss the last time they were up to play, but they are back this Friday at 7pm at The Tipsy Muse Café for the Mellow Yellow Concert Series. See the Facebook event for more details.
  • Even more music on the show today, as we revisit an interview from 2016 with David in the Dark‘s Kevin Belyea, and hear a couple of tracks from 2016’s Fire.
  • And let’s look at Fredericton from the lens of old cameras! I spoke to Josh Green of the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in 2018 about a series of photographs he was exhibiting.

News update:

  • After a four day streak, New Brunswick Public Health reported one new case of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
  • A bill that would teach Indigenous languages in New Brunswick schools received full support in the legislature.
  • The province’s public safety department says there has been a significant improvement in wait times at the border.
  • Neguac RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing girl from Bartibog Bridge near Miramichi.
  • Caraquet RCMP is asking for the public’s help with an investigation after finding a stolen vehicle in a stream in Anse-Bleue.
  • A Moncton-based amusement park company has the green light from the province to operate fairs this summer despite COVID-19.
  • Mount Allison University students who live outside of the Atlantic bubble will have to move to Sackville earlier than most years.
  • And a new tourism initiative is encouraging New Brunswickers to plan a staycation this summer.

The Lunchbox: 2020-07-14: Wrapped In Warmth

Posted on 2020-07-14 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • Beware! They can lurk anywhere… It’s Shark Awareness Day. (Ok, let’s just admit it’s an excuse to binge stuff on Shark Week on TV…)
  • Does it feel like the world is crazy? Well, it’s Pandemonium Day, so for at least one day, that’s fine. Just fine. Totally fine.
  • Today is Mac & Cheese Day… Didn’t we just have that?
  • It’s also Grand Marnier Day, so there will be many people who decide that “orange” is an acceptable breath flavour.
  • Long Distance Telephoning began between Fredericton and Saint John on this day in 1888. They used to have to connect individual cities.
  • Along with getting two chances to laugh this week (with the two nights of The Cap Comedy Night headlined by Jimmy MacKinley and featuring local comics, and the Delta Drive-In celebrating Christmas in July: “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on July 17 and July 18), you’ll also get more chances to hear live music, with Shameless at Dolan’s Pub (Thursday, Friday, Saturday night) and Tortoise, The Hare, and the Millionaire at The Tipsy Muse Café on Friday.
  • Today, we revisit 2016 with interviews with Heather Rankin on the occasion of her release of A Fine Line, and Anna Mathis, a fabric artist who was in residence that year.

News update:

  • Yesterday marked four days in a row since the last time New Brunswick Public Health reported a new case of COVID-19.
  • The University of New Brunswick came under fire after a student at its Saint John campus was overcharged for tuition.
  • The provincial government is making amendments to its essential worker wage top-ups, which will see more workers getting support.
  • Sussex RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing teenager.
  • The death of a man from Saint John is now being deemed as a homicide, according to the New Brunswick RCMP Major Crimes Unit.
  • A public art installation to celebrate the Saint John/Wolastoq river will grace the roundabout at Victoria Circle next summer.
  • After a council meeting last night, the City of Fredericton is considering the removal of a dam at Campbell Creek in Marysville.
  • And in entertainment news, police in Southern California have recovered the body of 33-year-old actress Naya Rivera.

The Lunchbox 2020-07-13: Here, There and Everywhere

Posted on 2020-07-13 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The LOn today’s show:

  • Can it be a coincidence that today is both French Fries Day and Beef Tallow Day? I’m suspicious.. and hungry.
  • It’s International Rock Day, and while I could have looked up whether it’s about rolling rocks gathering no moss, or rock ‘n’ roll, I still feel like it is still appropriate either way.
  • We could all use a good laugh, so remember that while the first night of the The Cap Comedy Night is sold out, a second night on Thursday still has tickets! Headlined by Jimmy MacKinley, hosted by Matt Richardson. With Paul Lewis, Anthony Bryan, and Maggie Estey. Tickets: https://bit.ly/CapComedy2
  • The Delta Drive-In this week is celebrating Christmas in July: “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on July 17 and July 18. I wonder if they will have turkey and eggnog at the restaurant?
  • This week, we look back at the 2016 TNB production of Marion Bridge with Thomas Morgan Jones, and a 2015 interview about a still-current issue of Fossil Free UNB. I also bust out a little meloncholy Del Bel, not entirely not because it mentions cold weather…

News update:

  • Yesterday marked three days in a row since New Brunswick Public Health reported a new case of COVID-19.
  • With more travellers entering New Brunswick each day, the province wants to help drivers by speeding things up at the border.
  • As all Service New Brunswick offices reopen this morning, customers are being warned they may experience longer lines and wait times.
  • Tracadie RCMP is warning residents about e-transfer scams on the Acadian Peninsula.
  • An Oromocto man has been charged in connection with the death of 29-year-old Justin Finnemore back in May.
    • Fredericton artist Katrina Slade hopes her temporary public art installation near city hall will inspire kindness.
  • David’s tea announced it will close 82 Canadian stores and all of its American stores.
  • And biology experts believe COVID-19 might not transmit onto surfaces as easily we thought.

RFYL Episode – ForesightEP125

Posted on 2020-07-10 by Matt Nightingale Posted in Run For Your Life!

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

It’s a brand new episode with a bunch of music from previous episodes, newer episodes, and the newest episode! Which tells you that this episode is.. a lot like the others in that sense!

Honestly, I’m going a bit stir-crazy here. Fortunately, there’s good horizons of awesome music coming our way, and I’ll hint at it both in the podcast, and then just outright play it, and.. probably just list it below, too.

Okay, that’s enough.

Playlist:
Wanted All Along – Cory Hotline
Feels So Good – The Dyadics
Guiding Lights – The JB Conspiracy
Colours – Deaf Radio
Time Is No Excuse – Freeways
Origami / Detonate – SOTO Official
Gloomy Eggplant – HALF Gramme of SOMA
Entropica – Puta Volcano
Abyss / Soulstorm – Unleash The Archers
