Posted on 2020-08-28 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • Today is Burger Day, so whether you cooked them yourselves, if they were made of meat or veg, I hope you grabbed a handful of the quintessential summer sandwich and enjoyed it.
  • Sadly (but unsurprisingly), the Monday Night Film Series has been cancelled for this fall due to COVID.
  • However, Symphony NB is staging a Condensed Ensemble to celebrate it’s 70th season, with 10 performances in October, November and December.
  • Flourish Fest has shifted from the spring 4-day spring festival to be a 10-day fall celebration! FLOURISH will be held from September 3-13, and ALL projects and programming will be totally free of charge. See the Facebook event for more details.
  • 2018 was a good year for artists, apparently. I found my interviews with Bruce Gray (wood artist) and Emily Blair and Emily Kennedy (WARPED).

News update:

  • There were no new cases of COVID-19 reported by New Brunswick Public Health yesterday afternoon.
  • Provincial party leaders were back on the campaign trail with many promises to undecided voters.
  • Drivers will pay a bit more at the gas pumps this week.
  • The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating after a homicide on the Burnt Church First Nation.
  • Two people have been arrested after police searched a home in Upper Woodstock on Tuesday.
  • To help the school population stay safe this semester, St. Thomas University will provide students with reusable face masks.
  • And provinces and territories are getting an extra two billion dollars to help ensure kids can safely go back to school next month.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

This may as well be “new release” day because albums I’ve been talking about all year are launching.. well, today. We double down on the double shot to bring you new albums, as well as spin new tracks from old favourites here on the show, so I hope you enjoy the NEW new stuff. Also go buy it on bandcamp instead of streaming it somewhere because streaming earns artists like nothing.

The Lunchbox: 2020-08-20: Getting Along

Posted on 2020-08-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On the show:

  • It was the International Day of Medical Transporters, so make sure to get a card ready for the ambulance driver. It was also World Mosquito Day, so make sure to SQUASH THE BUGGERS.
  • Earlier this year, we lost one of the longest-term members of CHSR, and the entire community lost a writer, poet, publisher and every-ready, on-the-ground, got-the-rig-and-gloves supporter of many theatre, music and art productions: Joe Blades. One of the things he was passionate about was unions, and I found this 2015 interview I did with him just before the STUSAU gained its first collective agreement.
  • And also five years ago, I had a chance to talk with Maddy Macnab of Passages Canada about the country-wide story collection project, the results of which you can find on their website.

News updates:

  • For the third day in a row, New Brunswick Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday.
  • The People’s Alliance is calling for a three-year motor vehicle registration in New Brunswick.
  • Green Party Leader David Coon says he has a plan that will save public transit in the province’s three major cities.
  • With all jurors sworn in, the fitness hearing for Matthew Raymond is officially underway.
  • Codiac RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing woman in Moncton.
  • A tractor-trailer pulling a tanker has overturned on the Trans-Canada Highway this morning.
  • It’s going to cost you a little extra to fill your gas tank after the Energy and Utilities board reset its pricing last night.

  • It was Potato Day. How is this not a provincial celebration? I mean, maybe not this year…
  • I really enjoyed the recent production of A Fifth Wall: A social distancing project by Herbert the Cow Productions and Nasty Shadows Theatre, and realized that I had spoken to Scott Shannon in 2019 about his ongoing character with the production of that year’s A Story Jones.
  • And back in 2015, I spoke to Len Falkenstein about his original play Lac Athabasca, which reflected metaphysically on the tragic train accident in Quebec. Actors Alex Donovan and Jean-Michel Cliche join us to talk about the fake story about real events.

News updates:

  • New Brunswick reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
  • Blaine Higgs says he plans to change the way wellness checks are performed in New Brunswick.

The Lunchbox 2020-08-13: Waiting For The Humours To Dry

Posted on 2020-08-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On the show:

  • It was pretty simple on Thursday (for once): it was just Filet Mignon Day. (And probably something else for vegetarians.)
  • Lainie B from Monday Night’s B Street has another instalment of  Positive Songs For Pandemics with The Arkells and Frank Turner’s song Hand Me Down.
  • While we do hear The Grey by Kill Chicago, I mistakenly identified the interview. It was with Carter Chase, a sculptor who was in the Barracks as an Artist-in-Residence in 2016.
  • And the short film The Beautifully Drowned by Jon Dewar won several awards, but before it was even done, I caught up with him in 2016 to talk about what was going into it.

News updates:

  • New Brunswick Public Health reported one new case of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
  • A proposal by Premier Blaine Higgs to avoid a potential snap election will be front and center again today in Fredericton.
  • Education Minister Dominic Cardy begins his return to school briefings today.
  • You’ll be paying a bit more to fill your gas tank after the weekly setting by Energy and Utilities Board.
  • A man is facing charges after robbing a convenience store in Shippagan earlier this month.
  • Woodstock RCMP are looking for the public’s help to locate a missing man from Piercemont.
  • New Brunswick will hold Canada’s first jury selection and trial since the onset of COVID-19.
  • And the national RCMP wants to hear from the voices of youth across the country.
