Once On Much – Ep06 The Killjoys
Episode 06 – The Killjoys 
When Mike Trebilcock thinks back to the 1990s, his memories don’t start with chart positions or industry milestones—they start inside a building. Specifically, the MuchMusic and CityTV headquarters on Queen Street in Toronto. It was a place of live performances, interviews, cameos (including a blink-and-you-miss-it walk-on in the film Balls Up), and it was where Canadian bands felt seen. Long before that, though, The Killjoys were built on a lifelong friendship. Mike and drummer Gene Champagne had been playing together since they were kids, shaped by ’70s radio, bubblegum pop, punk, and power pop. That mix became the band’s signature—catchy, scrappy, and true to who they were.
Listening back now, Mike sees The Killjoys’ catalog as a series of moments in time. Starry captured their DIY beginnings, Gimmie Five reflected a leap forward recording at Memphis’s legendary Ardent Studios, and Melos Modos gave them space to experiment back home. Revisiting those songs years later feels “like putting on a comfortable pair of shoes,” he says—helped by the fact that he wrote them in a range he can still sing without thinking. Being part of Big Shiny Tunes and the MuchMusic era didn’t feel historic at the time, but looking back, Mike sees how it put Canadian bands on equal footing with bigger American acts. These days, he brings that same creative energy to scoring films, working on indie projects that he describes as “a bit punk rock” themselves—DIY, imaginative, and slightly off-colour. His music can be found across platforms like Tubi and AMC+, with new projects always on the horizon. Much like the indie music scene he came up in, the indie film world thrives on risk, personality, and heart.
Looking back, The Killjoys didn’t set out to define an era—but they became an essential part of one. And decades later, those songs still fit just right.

Grey Temples 38 – Worlds Collide!
I gotta say, heaven to me could be to become the wind, blowing through the trees. But right up there would also be hanging out in the Grey Temple with two titans of the show, PAT and NUGGETMAN64! My God! The banter! The belching!
I made Pat dig through his semi-retired CD collection and he came up with some stone classics. His first pick has been in my head for roughly 30 years. His last pick is Beck, which if you know Pat (and you wish you did, believe me) is maybe the Pattest pick going!

Hi there everyone. Once again, it’s great to have you here here and I hope that you like my picks. I know you will. By the time this is aired we will all be well into the holiday season. So please be safe but have fun.
I realize that this mention is a little old now but if I could just give some love to the Toronto Blue Jays and say that as much as the big loss several weeks ago really hurt all of us, you guys made us all proud. It’s strange but we all felt like family.
I know it’s a cliché but there WILL be next year. Things will change, people will come and go but 2025 was one to remember.
A large reason that the Jays are on my mind is this song I am about to play. This amazing young lady wrote this song about the Jays and it’s spectacular. I haven’t met het yet but Noa Mellon’s husband and I went to high school together.

Once On Much – Ep05 Moist
Episode 05 – Moist
In the 1990s, Canadian alternative rock wasn’t just a genre—it was a shared cultural experience. For Jeff Pearce, bassist of Moist, that era is best defined by the chaotic, beautiful energy of the MuchMusic Video Awards. Unlike the polished veneer of MTV, MuchMusic felt accessible and DIY. Whether it was the street-party atmosphere of the CHUM building or the parking lot performances that blurred the line between audience and artist, the network bridged the gap between fans and the bands they loved.
Before Moist dominated the charts with multi-platinum albums like Silver and Creature, they were a band in a van. The 90’s landscape was built on pure determination, defined by touring the country on a shoestring budget and crashing at fan houses while selling T-shirts just to pay for gas. Pearce recalls a pivotal free festival in London, Ontario, where tens of thousands of people unexpectedly showed up, overwhelming the minimal staff. It was in that moment of raw, unbridled connection that he realized the band had truly become “something.”
Pearce also credits the staying power of hits like “Push” and “Ophelia” to a sense of honesty that resonated across the country. This authenticity was amplified by the Big Shiny Tunes compilations, which brought Canadian music into every living room coast to coast.
