TEM Ep.14: Another Brilliant Moon to Light the Night

Posted on 2018-01-03 by Aaron Springer Posted in Electric Metropolis

Another brilliant moon rises to light the night in a halo of neon lights. The stars are shining just beyond the haze of light; but the brightest stars in the night reside on the streets and alleys of The Electric Metropolis! I am your musical tour guide, AD Springer, and it’s time to begin our first tour of the new year through this wonderful city of sound and song! We will be starting our tour with a bright virtual concert by Adriana Figueroa as KIRA*MIKI from the cyberpunk bartender visual novel VA-11 HALL-A to the cyberpunk instrumentality of Garoad. After that will be a pleasant and warm trip from Daniel Saylor’s Spring Rain album. With this bright and soft beginning of our tour, we’ll see our way through the beautiful tones of Synth; cruise the Chiptune streets deep in memory; enjoy an exciting adventure through the VGM District; coming to a final stop to the singing of Ashley Barrett and Daniel Korb’s enchanting music from the Transistor Original Soundtrack of Supergiant Games fame; and ending our tour by meeting a friendly witch who just wants to be your friend courtesy of In Love With a Ghost.

Tour Itinerary:

First Stop:

“Shine Spark” by  Garoad off the VA-11 HALL-A EX – Bonus Tracks Collection
“Unstill Waters” by Daniel Saylor off the Spring Rain Album

Synth District:

“Oceans Apart” by FM Attack off the Stellar album
“Nomad (feat. Dana Jean Phoenix)” by Complierbau off the Album Tricker’s Paradise
“One Must Fall” by POWERCYAN from the Powergrid EP

Chiptune District:

“Reizen” by Cyanide Dansen off the Corona Zeatin album
“High Hopes” by LMan off the Summer of SID album
“Whiskers” by Hoffy off the album Whiskers Mahone

VGM District:

“Sanctuary Arp II (Title Screen)” by Rafael Langoni Smith off the SanctuaryRPG OST
“Stage 05 BGM ~ Hall of Death” by Norrin_Radd off the Treasure Buster Original Soundtrack album
“MUS_BOSS” by HALLEY LABS SOUND CREATION off the AKUMA NO AKUMU ~AR EQ-KUA ER SETA~ <<FIRST DREAM>> MINI SOUNDTRACK

Final Stop:

“She Shines” by Darren Korb off Transistor: Original Soundtrack
“i was feeling down then i found a nice with and now we’re best friends” by In Love With A Ghost off the album healing

Still here? Read this far into the itinerary? Then let me leave you with a bit of advice, from one music lover to another: click on the names above, seek out these artists on their twitter/bandcamp/soundcloud/youtube pages and support them. From things as large as buying their music, or even just letting them know you like their music: it always helps them and gives fuel to fire of creativity; perhaps, if nothing else, brightens their nights knowing that we all want to tour through through musical creations and works just a bit longer. Anyway, I’ve held you up long enough, thank you again for touring with me, and Happy New Year to you and all you care for today and tomorrow after!

Bondo’s Top 10 Favourite Releases of 2017!

Posted on 2017-12-28 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Her Turn, Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

ARTIST: TORA

ALBUM: Take A Rest

LABEL: Lustre/Indica

RELEASE DATE: June 9, 2017

TORA makes it onto my Top 10 list solely on the strength of the track Amsterdam. This is a song I had on repeat for hours/days/weeks and I’m still just as much in love with it, if not even more. The entire record is full of ambient layers, it’s very dancy in a lazy way. Take A Rest was my soundtrack to summer, and where it’s TORA’s debut LP I’m super excited to see what else they release in the future.

TRY TRACKS: Amsterdam, Mercury

ARTIST: Spoon

ALBUM: Hot Thoughts

LABEL: Matador Records

RELEASE DATE: March 17, 2017

I have a confession. I have never listened to Spoon before previous to this album, which happens to be their 9th!! It’s a band that I was well aware of but never got around to checking out. Apparently, I’ve been missing out. Hot Thoughts is loaded with big sounds without it actually going over the top. It’s a good mix electronic indie rock woven with piano hooks and just the right amount of funk.

TRY TRACKS: Hot Thoughts, Can I Sit Next To You

ARTIST: Matt Mays

ALBUM: Once Upon A Hell Of A Time

LABEL: Sonic

RELEASE DATE: October 20, 2017

This album was a grower. Upon my first listen I wasn’t that into it, mainly for the fact that I was hoping for a Coyote 2.0. But the more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with it. It’s an introspective album of heartbreak, falling out of love and letting go, and being broken, then getting on with your life. It’s a bit dark, but above all it’s a great rock n’ roll record.

TRY TRACKS: 78’s, 33’s & 45’s; Drive On

ARTIST: David R. Elliott

ALBUM: Strawberry Grass

LABEL: Working Class Records

RELEASE DATE: June 20, 2017

I’ve said many times before, I think David R. Elliott is a prolific writer. With a total of 16 releases under his Bandcamp page ranging from folk, alt.country, to psych-ish rock n’ roll, and no matter which LP/EP you pick you know you’re going to hear clever lyrics and songwriting. What sets Strawberry Grass apart from other 2017 releases is its fully analog recording (mixed and produced my Mike Trask at MRC). It’s an authentic scrappy rootsy punk sound that Saint John seems to foster so well.

TRY TRACKS: I’m Not Him; Letter To My Son

ARTIST: Avec le Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche

ALBUM: Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much

LABEL: Constellation Records

RELEASE DATE: January 20, 2017

Is Krautrock still a thing? How else can you describe Pas Pire Pop, I Love You So Much? What a quirky way to musically kick off 2017! It’s a psychedelic electronic sonic gem that is divided into three movements. It’s like a super interesting long form jam. In an era where everything is starting to sound the same Avec le Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche keeps my love of weirdo music alive.

TRY TRACKS: Alize et Margaret D. Midi moins le quart. Sur la plage, un palmier ensanglante II; Tourner incessamment dans l’eclatement euphorique de soi – Road Painting Ahead I

ARTIST: Methyl Ethel

ALBUM: Everything Is Forgotten

LABEL: 4AD/Dot Dash

RELEASE DATE: March 3, 2017

For not being the biggest fan of pop music this album stayed in my heavy rotation all year long because Methyl Ethel has thrown the cliché out the window. The combination of jangly guitar paired with some synth electro pop again created a dark quirky texture of sounds.

TRY TRACKS: Drink Wine; L’ Heure des Sorcières

ARTIST: Whitehorse

ALBUM: Panther in the Dollhouse

LABEL: Six Shooter Records

RELEASE DATE: July 7, 2017

Statistically, husband and wife duos can be messy. (Sonny and Cher, Ike and Tina, Bey and Jay Z, etc.) But Hamilton’s Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet prove with their 4th studio record that sometimes, just sometimes, it can work. Panther in the Dollhouse is a bit of a departure from the folkier sounds that I associate with them and takes you on a ride covering all the soundscapes from power harmony pop, rock, and blues. It’s an anti-album about the complications of life, and if you’re looking for a feels-good album you’d better move on.

TRY TRACKS: I Can’t Take You With Me; Nighthawks; Manitoba Death Star; any of them, really.

ARTIST: Walrus

ALBUM: Family Hangover

LABEL: Madic Records

RELEASE DATE: June 9, 2017

Walrus have a couple EP’s out already but Family Hangover is their first full length album, and what a way to start their career! It’s a retro sounding jangle garage rock record with sick bass lines, maybe a reason why I love this album so much.

TRY TRACKS: In Timely Fashion; Step Outside

ARTIST: Not You

ALBUM: Misty

LABEL: Fundog Records

RELEASE DATE: May 12, 2017

The first time I listened to this album I absolutely knew this would end up on my favourite albums list. A Halifax supergroup, it’s an all-female foursome made up of other bands like Dog Day, Bad Vibrations, Moon, and more! The album is full of shoegaze tones and distortion with melodies, harmonies and pop hooks (but not how you’d expect).

TRY TRACKS: Mabel, twofour, PT

ARTIST: The Hypochondriacs

ALBUM: In 3/4

LABEL: Self-Released

RELEASE DATE: September 9, 2017

I don’t know what I can say about this album that I haven’t said before. This record is witty, tragic, heartbreaking, and addictive. Give it a listen, or a few!

TRY TRACKS: Just Like Before; Two Bottles Of Whiskey; Reaching Out

ParaPhrasing – Slender Man

Posted on 2017-12-27 by Bondo Posted in ParaPhrasing

Slender Man is a fictional paranormal character that began as a creepypasta internet meme created by Something Awful forums user Eric Knudsen in 2009. It was a Photoshop contest that asked people to turn ordinary photographs into creepy-looking images.

Yet, two pre-teens blame Slender Man for stabbing a classmate 19 times, claiming that Slender Man would kill their family if they didn’t carry out this deed.

Did these two girls actually think Slender Man spoke to them? Was the idea of Slender Man just used as a scapegoat?

Creator Eric Knudsen never claimed that Slender Man was real, and it was openly known that it was an internet contest, so why are people claiming to have had real life encounters? Listen in while Marvin, John and Erin explore this idea.

Missed a previous episode of ParaPhrasing? You can catch up on other episodes here.

TEM Ep.13: Year’s Ending

Posted on 2017-12-27 by Aaron Springer Posted in Electric Metropolis

Here at our Year’s End, I am inspired to think of the past inaugural autumn and winter season of The Electric Metropolis and how special they are to me. Thirteen official episodes, with one pilot episode on the Bricolounge, have come and gone and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. I have had the opportunity to meet great artists, listen to great music, and showcase music to you all that most don’t usually hear on the radio. From dance-friendly Future Funk; synthwave both bright and dark; chiptunes from video games to demonstrations of hardware; and all else in electronica that I have slowly experienced with each and every listener who have listened live and via podcast: these things I am forever grateful for.

Don’t mistake me, this is not the end of our tours throughout The Electric Metropolis. In the New Year we’ll be exploring more chips, more games, and more music from around the globe to bob, dance, and smile to. If there is anything that makes touring worth it is knowing the sprawl of sound and song is never-ending into every direction all day and all night.

What happens when someone is introduced into the wilds of the so-called “Holiday Spirit”?
We may never truly know. They simply come back changed, and there’s nothing that can be done to revert them.

The only treatment is preventative. Take one of these, wait one hour, and you will be adequately prepared for any exposure of this life-altering “cheer”.

The final few minutes of this episode deal with the new definition of homelessness developed by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness (COH). The COH wants to improve the understanding, measurement and responses to homelessness in Canada by providing a common ‘language” for addressing this complex problem.
