The candidates spoke about the impacts the sector can have on mental health and literacy, how it brings communities together and the need for more funding to help kickstart those pursuing careers as artists.

The Lunchbox Interview: Terry Graff (Avian Cyborgs)

Posted on 2024-09-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Sometimes it takes something somewhat outrageous for us to make sense of the world.

My guest today is Terry Graff, a mixed-media artist who combines whatever he can get a hold of into complex, multi-layered, challenging artwork. He joins me to talk about an exhibition of his work, filling one gallery with works from his Avian Cyborgs series and the other gallery with a combination of different series, including his Pandemic Horror Series. Terry joins me to talk about his long history of art-making from combining found objects and found ideas, and his constant inspiration.

Avian Cyborgs is ending its country-wide tour at the UNB Art Centre galleries, and is on display until December 6, 2024.

The Lunchbox Interview: Don Hannah, Natasha MacLellan (“Greetings”)

Posted on 2024-09-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

What if I told you that you have the chance to eavesdrop on a conversation spanning a century? What if I told you it would come to you as real mail?

My guests today are Don Hannah (playwright & author) and Natasha MacLellan (Artistic Director of TNB). They join me to talk about Greetings, the latest theatrical production from TNB. Or, to give it’s full title: Greetings: One Hundred Years of Family Life — birthdays, funerals, wars, and feuds; engagements, breakups, elopements, elections, school days, and holidays; tears, queers, debts, and secrets; I love yous, I hate yous… and all the news in between — in Twelve Letters.

You can purchase “tickets” for this “event” right now until the end of October, and the letters will start being sent to recipient later in the year. The event is limited, however, so be sure to act earlier to get a chance to experience it.

CHSR News – September 24th, 2024 – Fredericton City Council Votes On Next Steps For Aquatic Centre

Posted on 2024-09-24 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News

Fredericton city council voted on their next course of action in building a new regional aquatic centre last night.

Chief Administrative Officer Steven Hart made a presentation to Fredericton’s counselors on paths forward in the municipal governments pursuit of building a new regional aquatic center to replace the close Sir Max Aitken Pool.

This past June, the Capital Regional Service Commission ruled that the proposal the city brought forth did not fit the definition as regional. Pushing against the Fredericton regional aquatics facility feasibility study council had accepted back in 2021, that deemed the project necessary as long as an appropriate representational governance model as well as proportional capital and operating cost sharing were implemented.

Johnny James spoke with counsellors on their next steps with the project.

Posted on 2024-09-23 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News

Joining a national cross-country counter-protest, Fredericton’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allies gathered to fight against policies and rhetoric they deem hateful and dangerous to the province’s youth.

Over 80 Frederictonians gathered in front of the NB Legislature on Friday in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and to counter a movement called 1 Million March For Kids, a movement seeking to eliminate sexual orientation and gender identity curriculum and policies from Canadian schools.

The gathering was organized in unison with three other counter-demonstrations across the province and 35 total across the country. Where those impacted spoke out and shared their stories.

Johnny James spokes to the organizers about the importance of this demonstration.
