Some people play music; other people seem to be music.
My guest today is Jenie Thai, a singer-songwriter of great spirit and energy. She joined me today to talk about how she came to be who she is, how music has always been a natural part of her life, and how she’s been able to see and do so many things by being fearless.
Jenie will be performing at the Grimross Brewing Company tonight (Oct 28) at 7:30pm, and at The Hollywood Star Room on Oct 29.

One of the biggest socio-political changes in the modern world is the transformation of Russia from what it was to what it is today — and it’s still changing.
How do you understand such a change? How do you comment on it
That is one aspect of Slavs!, the darkly humourous play written by Tony Kushner and to be performed as the season opener of Theatre UNB, starting October 27 and running nightly at 8pm until October 31. My guests today are Alex Pannier and Aaron Ellis, two of the UNB student actors involved in the play. They play Poppy and Rodent, respectively, and along with performing part of a scene live in studio, we talked about how they became actors, how it was to learn these parts (and their complicated Russian names), and what this play presents to its audience.

Do you prefer the slow shamblers, the speedy runners, the wasteland re-born or the rotting meanderers?
How do you like your zombie?
This weekend, you’ll get to see all kinds! The 7th annual Fredericton Zombie Walk will kick off at 1pm on Saturday, and dozens of participants will bring out the best of their worst nightmares in zombie form. My guest today is one of the organizers of this celebration and fundraiser, Stephanie Diana Durelle. We talk about the new things you can see this year (music! freakshow! What does it mean to be “spiritual”?
A working definition might be: “searching for those things which help give your universe meaning”.
Perhaps you could even find such things embedded in music and art. That’s the goal of the workshop “Beginning The Spiritual Journey” coming up on October 31 and November 1. My guest today is Professor and President Emeritus of UNB, John McLaughlin, who has been working to encourage a series of discussions, workshops and events around the notion of spirituality. We talk about his own journey, his hope for the workshop, and the details of music and art that will be the focus on this upcoming event.

I am continually amazed with the complex creations that can come about from simple things like wooden boxes filled with metal strings being hammered by mallets under the direction of finger presses. The piano is, at is essence, a simple thing, but artists turn it into a vehicle for incredible beauty and sophistication.
One of those artists will be in town next Wednesday (Oct 21): Bogdan Dulu is a masterful musician, and will be conducting both a master class (open to all audience) and a performance (ticketed) at Memorial Hall next week, as part of the ongoing Music On The Hill series from UNB. Sarah Beth Shiplett from Music On The Hill is my guest today, talking about this pianist’s anticipated demonstration of very complicated performance pieces, the master class that comes before it, and the work of composers and performers.
