TWS334: Hal-Con 2015 Part One

Posted on 2015-11-13 by weirdshow@gmail.com (the Encaffeinated ONE) Posted in Film Reviews, The WEIRD Show

TWS334 logoIt was my pleasure to attend the annual science-fiction convention Hal-Con again this year, and I had the chance to talk to some very interesting people. This is the first of two episodes filled with those interviews, as well as a few musings about the nature of conventions as well.

In this episode:

  • I speak with Diane Duane and Peter Morwood about writing for television, for teens and for Star Trek.
  • I speak with Kat Kruger about finding sudden success online — and finding a new way to tell an old tale.
  • I spoke with Amber Benson about being a constant creative and being Tara.

The Lunchbox Interviews: Frances Adair McKenzie (Artist) & Thomas Morgan Jones (TNB; Watching Glory Die)

Posted on 2015-11-12 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox20151112There is often a question that artists face — or which comes from people outside the audience of art: what is art for?

One answer might be: to reflect us and our world back to ourselves, something which indirectly became the subject of today’s pair of interviews.

First up, I got to meet Frances Adair McKenzie, a multi-media artist taking up residence at the Connection ARC for the next month. We talked about her experience of living almost her entire life without TV (and her current plans to fixate on it and reflect it), her travels with art in many parts of the country, and the many multi- and mixed-media projects she has done before.

And second, a wonderful return to the show of Thomas Morgan Jones, the Artistic Director of Theatre NB. Fresh off the completion of an extended run of Vigil, Jones is back to tell us about the latest production being staged at TNB. We talked about how this new play, Watching Glory Die, reflects on a fictionalized version of the tragic Ashley Smith story, how theatre plays a part in modern reflection, and his own reflections on surprises the black box theatre has presented.

Music today:

  • The weather can feel a little heavy and oppressive, so I acknowledge that with Brick by Steph Copeland from her Public Panic album.
  • A delightful, upbeat intermission was provided by Gypsophilia with the song Boo Doo Down from the album Night Swimming.
  • And theatre creates meaning where the was once was nothing but space, so we heard End of Nowhere from the album Crystallize by Ora Cogan.

The Lunchbox Interview: Penelope on Fest Forward

Posted on 2015-11-11 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-festforward2015How do you take a person or band from “people who play music” to “people who play music for a living“?

That’s the goal of Fest Forward: to give people the information, networking and skills to go further, to emerge as working performers. The festival happens this weekend, and while a large part of the event is providing performers with the extra information and presentation that they need, there’s also a pair of great concerts you can go to and enjoy! My guest today is a local musician and one of the organizers for Fest Forward, Penelope. We chat about the background and goal of Fest Forward, the transformation necessary to emerge as working performers, and about the sessions associated with the festival.

Music today:

  • One of the great bands that played for our fundraiser Shake’n’Bake on the weekend was Before the War. They played this wonderful song, Doom, which you can find on the awesome compilation It’s Always Sunny In New Brunswick.
  • To give you a taste of what’s to come at Fest Forward, we played Jon McKiel‘s I Know, from his self-titled release.
  • And to wrap up the hour we heard All You Sons and Daughters by Matthew Good, from his latest release Chaotic Neutral. (*)

(* By the way: if you’re a D&D gamer, the title “Chaotic Neutral” is a giveaway — and a D&D giveaway is one of the prizes you can win if you pay attention to his website. Matthew Good will be playing in Fredericton on December 10.)

The Lunchbox Interviews: John MacIntyre (Deep Freeze Winter 2015) & Sahil Chiani (Falls Brook Centre)

Posted on 2015-11-06 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DeepFreeze-FallsBrookOne of the hottest debated topics these days involves the question: when does weather become climate?

We’ve seen a lot of extreme weather happenings in recent years, all over the world but especially right at home. People are not only starting to pay attention, but there is a resurgence of interest in trying to work with the world, trying to live in a harmonious and sustainable way.

My guests today reflect this question, from observation of from action. My first guest is John MacIntyre, the author of the new book Deep Freeze: Winter 2015. This book chronicles the extraordinary winter we experienced at the beginning of this year, including many anecdotes and photos from all over the Maritimes.

My second guest is Sahil Chiani of the Falls Brook Centre, an organization dedicated to helping educate and encourage people about sustainable agriculture, inner peace and renewable energy, among many other things. The Falls Brook Centre recently opened up a new satellite office at The Ville, and are currently building their resources on their own land in West Glassville..

Music today:

  • I agree with T Thomason from their album Columbus Field: Silence Don’t Scare Me (except a little bit).
  • To celebrate the memories of winter past, we heard Icestorm from Free To Grow‘s self-titled release.
  • And a reminder to check out the Timeraiser this weekend — as well as reconsider what you do, we heard Alana Yorke‘s song Time Revisited from her album Dream Magic.

The Lunchbox Interview: Timeraiser

Posted on 2015-11-05 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-Timeraiser2015So many organizations have needs, and you’ve probably thought to yourself: I don’t have a lot of money, how can I help?

What if you could help just by being you — and giving up a little time?

That’s the basic idea behind Timeraiser, that non-profit organizations need people time as much (or even more than) they need money. My guests today are Jessica from United Way and Cortney from Feels Good. Their organizations have come together with several non-profit organizations and artists to hold a Timeraiser auction in which you bid volunteer time to win art pieces. The event is coming up on Saturday, November 7, from 7pm, costs only $12 to get in, and features The Alex Bailey Swing Band with a live performance. We talk about the origin of the idea, what it means to volunteer, and the integration of arts and non-profits in this and other opportunities.

Music today:

  • Grey days in the Fall can feel all the same, so I played Cut, Copy, Paste by Alert the Medic from their 2014 album, The Phantom Moves.
  • To celebrate the combo of organizations behind Timeraiser, I played a track called Tete Jaune Road from Black Spruce Bog from their album, Confluence.
  • And because we are seeking to make the world better, how about the song Utopia from London Above off their album Creatures.

The Lunchbox Interviews: Brittany McLean (Good Food Gathering) & JP Mortier (Musician)

Posted on 2015-11-04 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-GoodFoodGathering-JPMortierEverybody eats.

Doesn’t it make sense that everyone would want to have a chance to talk about things that affect eating? You’ll get your chance at the Good Food Gathering coming up this weekend. It’s another Open Spaces forum, this time focusing primarily on any aspect of the food system that you’d like to talk about, from food security, affordability, waste, distribution, farming, and anything else you’d like to bring. That happens this Saturday, November 7 at the Capital Exhibit Centre from 9am until 4pm.

My first guest today is Brittany McLean, one of the members of the Good Food Greater Fredericton network which formed out of a previous Open Spaces Gathering. We talk about many of the issues that might be coming up at the Good Food Gathering, and how it is of concern to everybody.

My second guest is JP Mortier, a Montreal musician playing around the Maritimes for the next couple of weeks. We talk about his inspiring time as a busker in Japan, how he found his key to learning the guitar, and life as a musician.

Music today:

  • We began with title song from the album Stripes by Pigeon Park.
  • To emphasize the importance of Food, I played Little Piece Of You by Whitney Rose from the album Heartbreaker Of The Year.
  • And to usher in my second guest, I played a bit of Anthony Gomes from his album Electric Field Holler, which offers great advice to everyone: Listen To The Universe.

WWE 2k16 Review

Posted on 2015-11-04 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

This year another installment of WWE has come to home consoles. Will it prevail against all odds or will it be down for the count?

2k Showcase:

This year’s Installment of WWE is a huge step in the right direction compared to last year’s 2k15. I will start this review by talking about the 2k showcase mode which you take on the career of WWE legend stone cold Steve Austin through his early days in ECW,WCW and WWE attitude era. When I played this mode it took me back to when I was a kid watching wrestling on Saturdays which was a great thing and was really popular in the attitude era. With all the matches you do there are special objectives to complete in order to unlock certain items whether it is attire, rings, wrestlers and title belts. In this mode you really get to relive a great piece of history in the wrestling entertainment world (The attitude era). The rivalries Stone cold had are probably some of the most memorable such as Mr. and Shane McMahon, Brett Hart and The Rock; The rock and Stone cold were the biggest superstars in the WWE at the time so it was absolutely fantastic rivalry. Once you are done with the 2k showcase you can go back to do the special objectives which unlocks more items. Even though there is only one show case in this year’s WWE game it is better than last year’s three showcases combined.

Career Mode:

Now with this year’s career mode is a huge improvement over last year’s it is not as bland and repetitive. In this year’s career mode there are a lot more customization options with your character. Once creating your character is done you jump right in to NXT and get with in the top 10 rankings for the title and along the way you get in to heated rivalries with your fellow WWE superstars especially the ones you dislike and as you win matches you move up in the ranks for the title. The only problem I have had so far with this and the rivals is that you can only fight for a title at Pay per View events and you cannot hold more than one title at a time I personally think you should be able to hold the U.S. Title and WWE heavyweight title at the same time. Now with the customization in the career mode is absolutely fantastic there are hours upon hours of customization from your move set to your entrance which is great. The career mode is great compared to last years with lots of exciting new installments it expands as a 15 year career where you fight to become a WWE legend and enter the WWE hall of fame.

Conclusion:

WWE 2k16 certainly packs a punch this year with its improved gameplay mechanics, 140 wrestlers and divas, Amazing showcase, a much improved online and career mode and customizations out of this world when it comes to rings, titles and characters. The game is not perfect though with some minor glitches during game play and some events it is noticeable and a new submission system that takes some time getting used to and wrestlers that don’t exactly look like themselves. But the game is really fun to play and exciting I am giving this game an 8 out of 10

WWE 2k16: 8/10

Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection

Posted on 2015-11-04 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Nathan drake is back and on the PS4 of all places with the uncharted Nathan drake collection.

Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan and Elena Fisher are back in HD with the first three uncharted games in HD on the ps4

Do these legendary adventures hold up on the newer generation of the PlayStation or does it get trapped in the lost worlds of these games?

Story: Nathan Drake a descendant of legendary explorer of Sir Francis Drake and his loyal friend’s victor Sullivan and Elena fisher go on three legendary adventures in Drakes Fortune, Among Thieves and Drakes Deceptions. Trying to find lost cities or treasure in a completely remote area. Racing to get there before the enemy whether it is a warlord, thief or just an evil debt collector. In these games a lot of things unfold such as character development, relationships between characters and even history on how the characters met and came to be so close.

Gameplay: This game is not your typical third person shooter. It is extremely fast paced, intense, adventurous and definitely cinematic one of the most amazing cinematic type shooters I have ever played. I never wanted to put the controller down even though I wanted to put the it down I could not bring myself to do it because even though I knew what was going to happen I wanted to relive and have that nostalgic feeling that I had on the ps3. This game is not just about the shooting though there are great puzzles to solve and also a lot of jumping, platforming in a way and chase scenes which makes your adrenaline pump through your veins as if you were just injected with a needle full of it.

Conclusion: I was so excited for this game to be released to be on the ps4 to relive the great adventures of Nathan Drake that took place on the ps3. I got to relive the

Nostalgic feeling of playing uncharted 2 among thieves which was my first ps3 game. With updated graphics and sixty frames per second and adding the in game models to the cut scenes

I did not think the game could get any prettier and boy was I wrong. Blue point and naughty dog out did themselves on this HD remake it’s just overall a wonderful experience. I cannot even express to say how much fun I personally had with these three adventures again that I cannot wait to play them all over with the anticipation of the fourth installment of the uncharted series. There were some minor glitches but that is ok it did not ruin the experience for me in these wonderful and overjoyed adventures I am giving this HD remake a 9.5 out of 10

Good job! Naughty Dog and Blue Point Games!

Mad Max Review

Posted on 2015-11-04 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Mad Max Review

Mad Max is a brutal and exciting game with its own story does not follow the movie’s plot. Does this game become king of the wasteland or does it get lost in the dust? Let’s find out

Story: In this game you play a Character named Max who seems like he’s mad at the world because his wife and daughter had been taken from him because of a disease that spread throughout his region which is now essentially a wasteland. In the opening scene you are hijacked by thugs of the wasteland and their leader named Scrotus attack you in the dessert they also steal your car and leave you for dead. When you come too you wonder and run in to a hunchback creature named chum bucket who comes to help you rebuild a better car called the magnum opus and from there your Adventure begins.

Gameplay: This game is a 3rd person action adventure open world game and it is fantastic gameplay there is care combat with many weapons up your arsenal including a harpoon which dragging people along never gets old. A shotgun which you can aim at gas cans to blow up the car. There are things on your car too like spiked rims, spikes on your car and you have armor to ram cares which does a lot of damage. Now while you are  on foot Max has a brutal fighting moves the combat system is the system as in the batman games which is great because I love that fighting system it never gets old too me. But his finishers are much more brutal then batman’s it has shiv finishers, and gut shots but I loved every minute. Now the combat isn’t the only thing you do in this game you collect scrap pieces to upgrade your car and you collect project parts to upgrade forts which helps you in the long run. Also you run in to wasteland encounter’s which is people who want you to perform certain tasks within the wasteland or they give you intel on a certain camp within the region you are currently in.

Verdict: This game only isn’t only fun it’s amazing I played this game for about 3 weeks completing nearly 100% of it I could not stop playing the game once I picked it up  I never knew what was going to happen next so I could not put the controller down. You get lost in this game for hours this game is not a borrow it is not a rent it’s a must BUY!!!. With a little bit of bug issues I am giving this game a 10/10 based just on the fun I had with it the gameplay and visuals.

Batman Arkham Knight

Posted on 2015-11-04 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Batman Arkham Knight Review

The world’s greatest detective is back in an all new adventure and his toughest one yet does the caped crusader fall in this one or does he prevail against his foes? Lets find out.

Story: So in this new installment of the Arkham series Scarecrow threatens to release a cloudburst of toxin in Gotham so the people of Gotham evacuate and Batman comes in to stop him but on his way he runs in to a bigger foe the Arkham Knight.

Gameplay: The Gameplay has its old ways at its best and then some. The combat system is the old free flow combat system which we all have known to love not just this game but this game made the combat system famous. The game also has some new features such as the Batmobile which is amazing it take such a bigger role then I ever thought it would take and I loved every minute of it. The game also features some new gadgets which really come’s in handy whether it be in the free flow combat or stealth gameplay. Another feature I especially enjoyed in this game was fighting alongside your sidekicks such as night wing and robin and cat woman the option to choose to play as them during these fights was amazing and the double team take downs just jaw dropping.

One of the features I am glad they definitely improved on was the side content was amazing. I was not a fan of it in arkham city but in arkham knight I found my self getting lost in doing all the side content in the game and I loved every minute of it I never found myself bored with the side content.

Closing thoughts: When I went in with this game I didn’t know what to expect but when I began playing  I could not stop I was addicted and was putting in to about 9 to 10 hours a day it took me 4 days to beat. I loved everything about this game. There were some parts that were jaw dropping ,exciting, emotional and even a bit  scary I personally recommend if you’re a big action adventure fan or batman fan you go buy this game right now I am giving this game a 9.5/10
