The Lunchbox Interview: Jenie Thai

Posted on 2015-10-28 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-JenieThaiSome people play music; other people seem to be music.

My guest today is Jenie Thai, a singer-songwriter of great spirit and energy. She joined me today to talk about how she came to be who she is, how music has always been a natural part of her life, and how she’s been able to see and do so many things by being fearless.

Jenie will be performing at the Grimross Brewing Company tonight (Oct 28) at 7:30pm, and at The Hollywood Star Room on Oct 29.

Music today:

  • We began today with The Belle Comedians song somewhat about changing seasons, Althea, heard from their album Charlotte.
  • From my guest’s latest album from 2013, Only The Moon, we heard two songs by Jenie Thai: the breathtaking Your Sweet Lullaby and the love song (and self-describing), So Lovely.
  • To tie the end of the hour together with both the hauntings to go see and the Charmed celebrity painting tour, we heard Portraits from Dana Sipos, from her album Roll Up The Night Sky.

The Lunchbox Interview: Alex Pannier & Aaron Ellis with Theatre UNB’s “Slavs!”

Posted on 2015-10-26 by encaf1 Posted in General

LunchBox-TheatreUNB-SlavsOne of the biggest socio-political changes in the modern world is the transformation of Russia from what it was to what it is today — and it’s still changing.

How do you understand such a change? How do you comment on it

That is one aspect of Slavs!, the darkly humourous play written by Tony Kushner and to be performed as the season opener of Theatre UNB, starting October 27 and running nightly at 8pm until October 31. My guests today are Alex Pannier and Aaron Ellis, two of the UNB student actors involved in the play. They play Poppy and Rodent, respectively, and along with performing part of a scene live in studio, we talked about how they became actors, how it was to learn these parts (and their complicated Russian names), and what this play presents to its audience.

Music today:

  • I always say that people should go to events around Fredericton. That’s why I played Where The People Are by Glory Glory, the title track from their new EP.
  • To introduce my guests, I chose Original Script by Derrival from their Departure & Arrival album.
  • And because there are so many things to do, I suggested that you might just want to echo Earthbound Trio from their latest album, Ditch Flowers, and Take The Day Off.

The Lunchbox Interview: John McLaughlin on Beginning Your Spiritual Journey

Posted on 2015-10-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-JohnMcLaughlin-BeginningYourSpiritualJourneyWhat does it mean to be “spiritual”?

A working definition might be: “searching for those things which help give your universe meaning”.

Perhaps you could even find such things embedded in music and art. That’s the goal of the workshop “Beginning The Spiritual Journey” coming up on October 31 and November 1. My guest today is Professor and President Emeritus of UNB, John McLaughlin, who has been working to encourage a series of discussions, workshops and events around the notion of spirituality. We talk about his own journey, his hope for the workshop, and the details of music and art that will be the focus on this upcoming event.

Music today:

  • Inspired (at least from the title) to think about UNB, I played Black and White and Red from In Days Past by The Regal Beagle Band.
  • Inspired by a recent reading of The Martian, I couldn’t help but play In Space by Rah Rah from the new album, Vessels.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplett (Music on the Hill) on Bogdan Dulu

Posted on 2015-10-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-BogdanDuluI am continually amazed with the complex creations that can come about from simple things like wooden boxes filled with metal strings being hammered by mallets under the direction of finger presses. The piano is, at is essence, a simple thing, but artists turn it into a vehicle for incredible beauty and sophistication.

One of those artists will be in town next Wednesday (Oct 21): Bogdan Dulu is a masterful musician, and will be conducting both a master class (open to all audience) and a performance (ticketed) at Memorial Hall next week, as part of the ongoing Music On The Hill series from UNB. Sarah Beth Shiplett from Music On The Hill is my guest today, talking about this pianist’s anticipated demonstration of very complicated performance pieces, the master class that comes before it, and the work of composers and performers.

Music today:

  • I began with an misspelled homage to one of my favourite shows (Twin Peaks) that happens to be a great song: Twin Speaks, by Jon McKeil, from his self-titled album.
  • It all comes round, so we listened to Again, by Faith Healer.
  • And to remind us of what we passed by the last time, we heard The Early Days by Old Man Leudecke, from his latest album Domestic Eccentric.
