The Lunchbox Interview: Made Them Lions

Posted on 2015-04-24 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-MadeThemLionsSome people discover their talents and their passions late in life, after searching. Others are practically born into it.

My guests today are in the latter category. Friends since kindergarden, bandmates for 8 years, Matt and Mike are two members of the Montreal pop/rock/reggae band Made Them Lions. They’re planning a cross-country tour this year following the release of their second CD, and stopped in to talk about the past, present and future of the group.

(As an aside: I asked a clumsy question comparing them to a “boy band”. It was meant more to highlight the phenomenon of pop stars and ask about what part image has to play, especially now that they have signed with a label. It was poorly worded, and wasn’t meant in a disparaging way. I apologize if it comes out negatively.)

Music today:

  • We have snow in the forecast again… Who’d A Thought? seems like the appropriate response, especially coming from The Real MacKenzies. Taken from their most recent album, Rats In The Burlap.
  • Although I didn’t interview them today, Fossil Cliffs will be appearing in interview form on Monday, and just played a show at the Capital. From their self-titled debut, here’s a hopeful turn for the weather: Summer Sun.
  • And from their brand-new, self-titled, second album, we hear another weather-appropriate song: Tidal Wave, from my guests Made Them Lions.

The Lunchbox Interview: Thomas Morgan Jones (TNB) & Alison Howells (UNB Leisure Learning)

Posted on 2015-04-23 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-TNB-UNBLeisureLearningThe more you know, the more you become aware of the universe around you. It is a way to appreciate things, and to never be bored.

This summer is going to be anything but boring, if my guests today are any indication! My first guest is Thomas Morgan Jones, the new Artistic Director at TNB. His enthusiasm for theatre is palpable, and we had a great time talking about the thematic setting that an Artistic Director is involved with, as well as talking about the great opportunities to learn more about the artistic expression of acting which he will have the chance to share with interested parties in an upcoming workshop.

The big announcement of the season will be coming up next week, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for it to share with you.

My second guest today is Alison Howells, the Program Development Officer at UNB responsible for managing the Leisure Learning courses and the summer Design Works Camps for Kids. We talk about the many wonderful opportunities people have to learn during these summer workshops, and tease a little about the upcoming Design Works camps.

Music today:

  • It is a good Spring reminder to get involved in as many things as possible, so we heard No Plan B from the album of the same name by Sieraslave.
  • A groovy second piece followed my interview with TNB’s new Artistic Director, so we heard from Elephant Skeletons‘s album Volume III with the song Rubies & Jewelry.
  • And to introduce my second guest, we heard from Revenge of the Trees with the song Workin’ from the album Into The Night.

Schedule Changes: Spring Shake-up begins!

Posted on 2015-04-23 by encaf1 Posted in Schedule Updates

Every Spring the ground comes free, new shows are planted in the ground to grow and the shows which are leaving are bid farewell.

This week starts those changes with three new shows being added, and a few other shuffles.

Schedule Shakeup - Broken Clock

Small correction: Strictly Hip Hop is moving to 10pm, not 11pm. Sorry!

Thursday:

  • Bravery, Repetition & Noise moves to 8pm (right after Bingo!).
  • Brand new punk show (so new, the paint on it’s real title isn’t dry!) starts up at 9pm. Show will begin next week, April 30.
  • Strictly Hip-Hop moves to 11pm. Nope! Coming to 10pm!
  • Something To Do With Bats has come to an end for the season. However, its host is transferring over to the punk show!

Friday:

  • Syndicated program Broadcasting Canada has come to the end of its run. We hope you enjoyed the discussions about public radio, and we’ll look for more like that in the summer.
  • Radio Ecoshock moves to 11am.
  • Brand new music show De-Railed starts up this Friday at 2pm.
  • Trystereo will now repeat at 3pm for this week, but it will be leaving us for the summer soon.

Saturday:

  • Brand new two-hour music show Psychodelic Saturday starts up this week at 2pm.
  • A repeat of Pardon My French will follow at 4pm.
  • Frañol moves to Sunday night.

Sunday:

  • Frañol moves to 10pm.

We’ll be seeing a number of shows come to a hiatus (and possibly a halt!) this summer, so now is a great time to bring your ideas to CHSR and create your own show! Drop by the station during weekday business hour to talk to us, or email ProgramDirector@chsrfm.ca with your ideas!

The Lunchbox Interview: Kim Lawrence of Real Food Connections

Posted on 2015-04-22 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-RealFoodConnectionsWhere does your food come from? Can you honestly say that you could even find out?

There’s a huge interest — and action! — in eating local. That means you not only have some transparency in where your food comes from, but you can be assured that it comes from a farmer or producer not that far from you.

Combine that with more conscientiously-produced food, lower reliance on pesticides and chemicals, and suddenly, the food tastes better!

My guest today is Kim Lawrence, one of the co-owners of Real Food Connections. This family-run business is quickly bridging the gap between local food producers and local food consumers, stimulating interest and awareness (as well as a lot of good eatin’!) in making a diet of good food produced in your backyard. We talk about where Real Food Connections comes from, what it has grown into and plans for the future!

Music today:

  • Double Experience are coming to town this week, so I pulled out Congratulations on Second Place from 721835.
  • As a consolation prize, you have me! From Ken Tizzard‘s latest album, No Dark No Light, we hear I Got You.
  • And trying to make a connection to the new kitchen, I played Chop On Through by Jon McKiel, from his self-titled album..

The Crazy Train Episode #XXXIX

Posted on 2015-04-20 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

newCTlogo_03012015

This week on the Crazy Train we had on a couple of the guys from Siegebreaker for the two hours of the show. Dale Lyons and Gavin Brown joined Steve ‘The Buzz Man’ Dunnett and I, and brought along some of their favorite Indie Metal tracks for Hour I and in hour II we played some of their all time favorite Global Metal bands. We discussed the evolution of the band, the inspiration for their songs and the history of Heavy Metal in their lives.

Siegebreaker had just finished recording a Session in Studio D, which will air in a few weeks. I’ll keep ya’s posted!

If you have requests, know of a band that should be heard, play in a band that should be heard, make sure you send your requests or your bands Mp3’s to musicdirectorATchsrfm.ca!

Please share these PODcasts with all your friends like a ranging case of VD!

Also remember you can download and listen to every single past Crazy Train episode since we resurrected the show last July!

I’ll try to get a show list of the music we played this weekend!
