In The Know Episode 2

Posted on 2015-01-20 by Joseph Keefe Posted in In The Know

In the Know.jpgIn this episode, Nazere Petalong is interviewed. He was accidentally misdiagnosed and placed in a psychiatric ward because of the revolving door effect in Canada’s health care system. The “Resolving the Revolving” forum discusses the current state of Canada’s health care system, and possibly what we can do about it. Also, hilarious satire commercials and a unique parody song is sung relating to the revolving door effect. You’ll love this one!!!!

Drive safe, eh!!!

The Stogies Restore My Faith In Rock N’ Roll, One Show At A Time

Posted on 2015-01-19 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

The Stogies Restore My Faith In Rock N’ Roll, One Show At A Time

THESTOGIES.jpgThe Stogies Played The Capital January 16, 2015

No amount of weather could keep Halifax’s The Stogies out of Fredericton Friday night. The Capital assembled a great night of rock January 16th with The Stogies, Brother, and Fredericton’s newest ensemble, Mrs. Hippie.

Mrs. Hippie contains members of Brothers, The Creaks and Burning Coast, melting all their sounds together to create a new tone of old rock mixed with aggressive tempos and guitar solos. Only their second liver performance, their cover of The Stooges “I Wanna Be Your Dog” instantly won the crowd over and had everyone talking about it after the set asking one another “who were those guys?”.

Brother is an old Fredericton favourite. With some new members in the mix their punky rock banter and catch synthed songs had me wondering why I haven’t seen these guys play live before?

The Stogies took the stage a little before 1am and instantly had the crowd engaged, all of us rocking our heads in unison. Playing song after song off their newly released full-length album Hoot, the crowd was sinking deeper and deeper into the music. People were jumping up and down, some beat their feet to the heavy drumming, and some inconspicuously air guitared to the sick riffs and solos engulfing the small bar.

You can purchase a copy of their album here, and be sure to check them out the next time they’re on tour in your town. – Bondo

The Lunchbox: Brendan McGee from Shivering Songs

Posted on 2015-01-16 by encaf1 Posted in Current Shows

LunchBox-ShiveringSongsThis city has a very thriving music community, both in terms of the musicians and the audience.

This city also has a very thriving winter, so it’s only natural that some great celebrations come to take our minds off of it.

Shivering Songs has, for five years now, brought a bit of light into the long winter. Surrounded for the last couple of years by increasing numbers of celebrations (under the umbrella of Frostival), the Shivering Songs festival still manages to shine.

Brendan McGee joined me by phone today. He’s one of the co-organizers and floating support people (as well as performer and artist contact), and he joined me via phone to describe the size, scope and incredible line-up for this year’s show.

Music today:

  • By My Side, title track from the album by Jon and Roy;
  • and from one of the Shivering Songs performers, Je T’aime Mon Amour from Buck 65, off his latest album Neverlove.

January 16, 2015 – CHSR 97.9FM‘s Bondo had the chance to chat with Sage McBride, vocalist and keys player of Fernie B.C.’s Shred Kelly. They will be visiting the East Coast next month promoting the release of their third album “Sing To The Night“, which is officially released January 27, 2015. Playing with Murder Murder and Fredericton’s own Josh Bravener, Shred Kelly is ready to bring their unique stoke folk to The Capital.

Listen in to the conversation to find out from Sage McBride what exactly stoke folk is and where that description came from, the difference between “Sing To The Night” and their two previous albums, and about the making of their music video for the first single “Family Oh Family”.

Be sure to see them February 14, 2015 at The Capital Complex.

The Lunchbox: Sam Salmon

Posted on 2015-01-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-SamSalmonWhen you hear about a musician, what do you think? Do you think, “They play an instrument, either solo or in a band, in a particular genre?”?

Because that would be only true in a few cases, if my experience is anything to go by!

Most of the musicians I’ve met — admittedly, from the indie scene in the Maritimes — specialize in one thing, pretty consistently: not specializing.

Sure, they might be best known as the guitarist in a folk band — but also play in a metal band. Or play solo rock ballads. Or have an electronic dance band on the side.

The interview on the show today is exactly that. Brydon Crane — often associated with his other work — has another identity, that of Sam Salmon. Bondo sat down with him to talk about what his new project means to him, and that interview is featured on today’s show.

Music on the show:

  • Gallows Humour by Little Wild, from their Victories album;
  • Caribou, from their album Our Love, with the song Back Home.

The Lunchbox: ENBICON 2015

Posted on 2015-01-14 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-Enbicon2015It’s almost time again for the return of ENBICON!

This time, you didn’t have to wait 25 years for its return. Just one year after that momentous return, it is now an annual event, thanks to the great team of people and enthusiasm from all involved.

I spoke with Julian Christie, one of the co-founders and supervising coordinators of the new ENBICON. We shared some of our passion, and Julian promises even more this year, including a game auction and area for those new to games.

Look for the two-day gaming convention at the end of the month: January 31 and February 1. Check the full schedule (PDF) on their website frequently.

The Lunchbox: Business and Taxes for Artists

Posted on 2015-01-14 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-BusinessAndTaxesForArtistsOn the surface, art and business seem entirely at odds..

Art, one might suggest, is about chaos, but business is about order.

But the world is made up of both parts, and sometimes it’s necessary to mix them.

My guests today are Gary Belding (independent accountant/consultant) and Joss Richer (ArtsNB). They have a new workshop coming up Wednesday, 4 February 2015 from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. The workshop is aimed at members of the arts community who need to learn more about treating their work like a business, and how to file and claim taxes. We talked about the need to take it seriously, and the kinds of things that will be discussed in the workshop.

You can register for the workshop at EventBrite.
