When I was a kid, I used to play “Star Trek” in the yard with my friends. We would look for t-shaped sticks that we’d use as makeshift phasers, and we would re-enact some of our favourite scenes from the movies. I would always get to be Kirk, and always to my surprise, I never had to argue with anyone about it. In fact, my friends seemed far more keen on pretending to be Mr. Spock and, until now, I never really understood why. Being the captain meant I got to lead our make-believe landing parties on whatever dangerous adventure I saw fit for all of us embark upon. I felt like the hero. What I didn’t really notice at the time, however, was that it was actually our “Spock” who got to lead us all safely out of the woods when it was time for us to holster our weapons and go inside for supper. Whether it was by swooping in at the last minute with volley of phaser fire and neck pinches, or by using his unmatched ingenuity to simply outsmart our made-up enemies, our Spock was always the unsung hero of our outdoor adventures.
And Spock was the hero…
In “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” it was Spock who ventured out on his own to solve the logic puzzle that was V’ger. In “The Wrath of Khan”, it was Spock who paid the ultimate price to save his crew mates from certain death at the hands of a vengeful madman. In “The Search for Spock” – well that title speaks for itself. Here was a man worthy of abandoning everything for in the faintest hope of bringing his body back home to be repatriated with his consciousness (something, I might add, that he had the wherewithal to stow away in McCoy’s head moments before his death). The truth is Spock was, and remains the most pivotal of all characters in the original series and movies – so much so, that J.J. Abrams even crafted an alternate, rebooted universe where two Spocks can coexist…and no one seems to mind that. Why? Because not only did we get our next generation of “Star Trek” films, but we got to keep our favourite part of the original series. In fact, both movies in the rebooted universe depend so heavily on Nimoy’s Spock that they wouldn’t have worked without him.
Why is this? What is so special about Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock that gives him such influence on the trajectory of the shows and movies? As a parent of three young children, the answer to this is somewhat obvious. Leonard Nimoy’s Spock is the quintessential “adult in the room.” He brings us wisdom, impeccable judgment and all of the comforts and assurances that come with his mere presence. Sure, Kirk could lead an army of red-shirted officers to their predictable deaths without the slightest hint of insubordination, but only Spock could steer his impulsive friend clear of his own hubris. Kirk was indeed the captain, but Spock was the leader.
Veteran “Star Trek” actor, Tim Russ demonstrated these very same qualities in his portrayal of Commander Tuvok on “Star Trek Voyager.” Being a Vulcan is no easy feat. When I was in theatre, “acting” was defined as how we conveyed our emotions to the audience, so playing someone who isn’t supposed to have any at all must have been daunting. Granted, being half human, Spock could always be forgiven for the occasional emotional slip. Nonetheless, Leonard Nimoy created a unique template that serves as the model for everything Vulcan, and Tim Russ was able to use this to create his very own Vulcan persona in Tuvok.
I had the privilege of interviewing Tim Russ in November about “Star Trek Renegades,” a soon-to-be-released production that features, not only a reprise of his role of the stoic and deadpan Commander Tuvok, but also, like Nimoy before him, Russ also showcases his own talents as a director. Given the similarities in their roles both on set and behind the scenes, it seemed quite logical for me to reach out to him last night for some thoughts, and he kindly obliged with this to say about his Vulcan colleague:
“I knew Leonard Nimoy personally, and worked on stage with him years ago when I was in college. He was a very easy going, and genuine, as well as a wonderfully talented actor. I still cannot believe that after having worked with him so many years ago, I would have the opportunity to follow in his footsteps playing a Vulcan character on another Trek series.
I personally owe him a great debt of gratitude.
We all will miss him…myself in particular.”

Now, I don’t think I can think of a bigger Spock fan than my mother. Yesterday was her birthday and a few hours after we had already exchanged some lighthearted “Happy Birthday” texts, I received this:

…and I truly believe she is. Much like the rest of us.
While a return trip to the Mutara System is not an option, I’m sure it would make a splendid gift if we were running around the yard with t-shaped sticks and choosing our own reality as Leonard Nimoy inspired countless numbers of us to do as kids (and some as adults!). Alas, she’ll have to settle for the Captain Spock bobblehead I hastily packed in with her other gifts when we visit tomorrow; but I know it will make her smile. She will display it with pride, hoping someone will ask her “why the Spock?” so she can tell them how much she loves the character and respects the actor who portrayed him. Not bad for a last-minute gift I suppose.
This afternoon, I’m going to post this article and then I’m going to watch “The Wrath of Khan.” Not only is it one of my favourite movies of all time, but I’m not ashamed to admit that James Horner’s musical score always invokes tears of the best kind of joyful nostalgia. The first bars of the Mutara battle sequence are just so uplifting and then you are treated to a classic display of tactical warfare (with just a touch of dry wit for good measure!). It is also the turning point where Spock takes control of all destinies, leading to one of the most thrilling and heartbreaking sequences in Trek history.
Today I may have need to take some acting cues from the man himself in order to keep it together at the end, but I look forward to every minute of his performance and will be forever grateful for the gifts he has shared with us for well over 40 years and counting.
Farewell Leonard Nimoy. I have been, and always shall be your fan.
Do you have a favorite Leonard Nimoy moment or performance that you would like to share? Feel free to send me an email at brew@wmdradio.com. We’ll be taking some time on next week’s show to remember his work and we’d love to tell your stories as well.

Living on the bare minimum seems to be normal for the majority of us in Canada. Even with continued increases in minimum wage adjustments every so many years, these “adjustments” do not seem to help with the ever increasing cost of living for Canadians, which is always $5.00/hour more than any minimum wage “RAISE” that we get!
This is the “Wage Causing Rage” forum In The Know. Jason Lowage has been working at Canadian Tire in Squirrel Junction Newfoundland for awhile and is here to tell Canadians how frustrating it is to be living below the poverty line in Canada on minimum wage, and having to drink some nasty Gross Mourne screech because he cannot afford the “Good Stuff” at the local liquor store.
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s proposed second bill of rights from 1944 and a compelling CBC article featuring Canada’s NDP government is brought into this hilarious interview with one of Canada’s happiest but most frustrated Newfies “On Da Rock Der Boy!!!!!!!”
With a political satire commercial that is a perfect match for This Hour Has 22 Minutes or The Rick Mercer Report, and a parody song that will have much more than a “MINIMUM” effect on listeners working on minimum wage, you will be asking our government more questions about why one of the richest countries in the world has so many poor people surviving on “THE BARE MINIMUM” while a select few get to have OUR cake, and eat it too!!!!! Enjoy eh, this ones for you der boy!!!!!!!

As of today, February 27, we are 30 days away from the biggest wrestling event of the year – WrestleMania. The 31st installment of the “show of shows” takes place on March 29th at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA on the WWE Network for only $9.99 (or $11.99 in Canada!). And thus far, the build to this show has been barely worth five bucks. Honestly, WWE is very lucky that the vast majority of people are going to watch on the network for ten dollars, because I cannot imagine people shelling out $70 to watch this on traditional PPV. And quite frankly, I am stunned that I feel this way.
More often than not, the period of time between January and April is typically the hottest time of year in WWE. January kicks the year into high gear with the number 2 PPV of the year, the Royal Rumble. This year however, they couldn’t shift out of park. The January 25th Rumble PPV that emanated from Philadelphia was nothing short of a disaster, for the second consecutive year. With the exception of the WWE title match, the show was very forgettable. One thing that will not be forgotten though, is the reaction to the Royal Rumble match, where Roman Reigns reigned supreme, and was the recipient of boos being rained upon him, as his “cousin” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (they’re not really related) attempted to stifle his frustration. The audience in Philadelphia set the course for what the “Road to WrestleMania” would come to look like at this point. Their passionate disapproval of the creative direction of the ‘Mania title program is quite glaring, even if you don’t follow the wrestling business closely. Anyone with any ounce of knowledge can tell that Roman Reigns is not ready for the spot for which he’s being groomed. This is compounded by the fact that he was programmed with the man that most people want to see in that spot in the first place – Daniel Bryan.
Bryan, who was forced into the main event picture last year, largely due to crowd reactions and CM Punk’s departure, has been embraced by the fan base as a main eventer, and the consummate under dog being held down by management. The fans feel a special bond with him that they don’t have with anyone else; they feel as if he’s their guy, their representative in the WWE world. He’s the guy that they willed into the WrestleMania XXX main event, and then he got hurt. He had to give up the title in order to have neck surgery last summer. He also encountered an elbow problem that kept him off the road even longer. The prognosis was unknown for months; nobody knew when he was coming back, with WrestleMania 31 being a potential long-shot. The Royal Rumble seemed unlikely. But then, on an episode of Raw a few weeks before the Rumble, Daniel Bryan made the announcement that he had been cleared and that he would be returning to action, and would be in the Royal Rumble match. At that point, the complexion of the WWE had changed, and the build to ‘Mania seemed like it had some new life injected into it; but that optimism has faded.
When Bryan made his return, the booking of WrestleMania seemed so obvious: Daniel Bryan wins the Rumble, and faces Brock Lesnar for the WWE title. Some may disagree, and say that I’m taking the “internet mark” position of siding with the internet darling Bryan, but watch the shows and listen to the crowd. Daniel Bryan has proven that he is over. Bryan has forged a connection with the audience that has led to him being the number 2 babyface in the company. Roman Reigns, at this point is struggling to make a connection. He’s got a great look and a great physical charisma, but that’s about it. His promos, largely because of the material, are sub-par. His ring skills are average at best. But that’s what Vince likes, so that’s what we’re going to get.
I’ll be honest, Brock vs. Reigns feels like a weak main event. Perhaps the weakest in recent memory, since at least the Hunter/Jericho match, but at least that show had Hogan vs. Rock. Aside from the snowstorm Raw the day after the Rumble, the build has been non-existent. I’m afraid of the reaction that the match will get, especially once Reigns wins. Reigns has been getting somewhat mixed reactions, however they’re nothing near what they should be for man in his position. John Cena gets a mixed reaction, but it’s passionate. People care about Cena, whether they like him or don’t, he gets a great response. Reigns’ reception seems more like apathy. People have conceded that fact that the Roman Empire will run wild in the WWE for the time being, but I don’t think the majority of fans on board. It’s more acceptance than excitement. And that sums up this year’s WrestleMania more than anything, it’s more acceptance and apathy than excitement. Aside from the novelty of Sting’s first WWE match, and seeing whether Undertaker will disintegrate, what is there to get excited about?
To me, it all starts at the top of the card. The main event is the tip of the pyramid, and everything else falls into place underneath. Brock vs. Reigns is a disappointment. Even though we’ve known forever that this would be the main event, there’s no anticipation. It’s colder than a nun’s tit. When Roman Reigns beat Daniel Bryan at Fast Lane, you could feel the air being let out of the sails of the company. Deep down everyone knew it was happening, but most people also know when they’re going for a colonoscopy, but that doesn’t make it any easier.
I want to be excited for this show. I mean, it is WrestleMania, and it’s the biggest show of the year. But the idea that Daniel Bryan could be wrestling for the Intercontinental Championship in a multi-challenger ladder match is mind-boggling to me. I’d much rather see him work Sheamus in a singles match, where there’s an actual story, not just a hollow trainwreck ladder match. I guess we’ll see what happens in the weeks to come.
I’m not ready to throw in the white towel just yet. They still have 30 days to get me interested in this show, but it’s going to take a lot of work to get me to where I was this time last year. But then again, last year they actually listened to the audience and put the right guy over, rather than blindly do what they pleased. Last year, there was real excitement and anticipation surrounding “The Granddaddy of Them All”, this year it’s apathy and malaise. It’s a sad state of affairs in the Roman Empire.

This week on Donair Kitchen Party Radio Show, Mike tried to cope with the absence of his co-host and Donair Life Partner, Henry Svec. Like most people, he handled it in the most unhealthy way: stress eating (Donairs) with another person (an attempt to “replace” Henry). Local music luminary and all-around supercooldude Chris MacLean came in, spun a yarn, and enjoyed some special donair times. They played tracks by Real Estate, Adam Mowry, Church Purposes, LCD Soundsystem, Calexico, and otherrrrrrrs. It was pretty good, I guess.

Where is the art in your community?
Well, it might just be in your community!
My guests today represent the integration between these things, the idea that art is not separate from community, but rather thrives within it. Eddie Young operates the Roots & Soul Music Room venue out of his living room. He’s crowdfunding to buy a permanent set of amps and other necessary equipment so that he can host more bands and do it better. Brydon Crane is a member of the Shifty Bits Cult, a group of musicians and artists who are seeking to create more integration. They’re holding an open meeting tonight called the Community Arts Gathering, in which they hope to talk with you about ways the arts community can work together even more.

“13 Killer Kills”
By Remington J. Osborne
So last time I talked about how I got into horror and my love for Friday the 13th. This time we’re going to take a closer look at Friday, and talk about some of my favorite moments from the series. And by favorite moments, I mean the brutal killings. Hey come on, we’re not here for the acting.
Maybe a little bit for the boobies.
#1: Friday the 13th part 2 – Mark takes a machete to the face.
Now this kill is doubly tragic. Not only does Jason feel it necessary to kill a person in a wheel chair, but he adds insult to injury by letting poor Mark roll backwards down two flights of stairs. You’d think Jason would see the guy is in a wheelchair and cut him some slack. Nope. Jason is an equal opportunity killer.
Fun Fact – That was actually a stunt person that took the ride down those stairs.
#2: Friday the 13th part 6 – Sheriff Garris gets broken in half.
Ah, poor Sheriff Garris. All this bastard was trying to do was save his daughter from a machete welding zombie, and what does he get for his trouble? Folded over like cheap origami on Japanese New Year. Well that settles it; if my daughter ever breaks a guy out of jail, which she just met, and tries to help him kill a resurrected serial killer…….., she’s damn well on her own. My back is in bad enough shape as it is; it doesn’t need to be twisted like a pretzel.
Man, pretzels are delicious.
#3: Friday the 13th (Reboot) – Amanda burned alive in her sleeping bag.
Now this one is from the 2009 reboot. I almost call it a cheat, because something very similar happens in part 7, but it’s pretty grizzly so it makes the list. Now if you’re about to be killed by Jason the best you can hope for is a quick death. Poor Amanda was not on the receiving end of a quick death. Instead she was tied into her sleeping bag and hung over a bonfire until her own juices cooked her alive. Charbroiled frat girl anyone? I’m told she’ll go well with a nice Merlot.
#4: Friday the 13th part 3 – Rick gets his head crushed until his eye pops out.
Back in the 80’s everybody was doing 3-D, much like they are today, so why should Friday be any different? This was one of the kills that really showed off the 3-D effect. It was cheesy as hell, and the prosthetic head was ridiculous, but it makes for an entertaining moment on screen. This is also the first moment we see just how powerful Jason is. Dude can crush a guy’s skull with his bare hands.
#5: Friday the 13th part 5 – Demon killed while on the shitter.
I’m not sure what’s more embarrassing here; getting killed while on the shitter, or the fact that it wasn’t even Jason. This was a horrible way to go no matter how you look at it. Our man Demon was just sitting there minding his business, refunding the enchiladas he had for supper, when fake Jason started poking holes in the outhouse with a spear. Demon took a spear to the knee before pseudo Jason found his mark and got him through the chest.
I might also point out that Demon was serenading his girlfriend, who was brutally murdered just before he was. Who sings to their girlfriend while taking a shit? Not me, not you. Demon that’s who! So fuck you fake Jason, you didn’t just kill a guy sitting on the shitter. You killed true love.
#6: Friday the 13th part 5 – Eddie gets his eyes gouged out with a leather strap.
Well since were on the subject of fake Jason we might as well keep going. He did have some clever ways to dispatch folks. Remember earlier when we said if you met Jason the best you can hope for is a quick death? Rick here was not the recipient of one. This looks like a horrible way to go, in fact I’m sure he immediately forgot about creek side sex party he was just having with…
#7: Friday the 13th part 5 – Tina takes garden shears to the eyes and into the brain.
So here’s Tina, trying to make the best out of a sexually transmitted disease after she let pretty boy Eddie climb all up inside her. She’s rewarded by having a pair of garden shears thrust into her eye balls and into her brain. I think this could count as one of those “quick deaths” people should be hoping for. Oh well, at least Jason saved her a visit to the free clinic.
#8: Friday the 13th part 8 – Julius takes a killer punch to the kisser.
And in this corner wearing the red, white and blue, weighing in at 185 pounds, 175 pounds minus his head, JULIUS!!!!! I gotta give it to Julius, Jason had him backed into a corner and he came out swinging. Big Jules got a few punches in and it looked like he might have put old Jason on his ass, but at the end of the day he was no match for Jason’s stamina and raw power.
What is really cool about this one is Julius’s POV after Jason delivers the right cross. I’ve always wanted to know what it would look like after I’ve had my head punched off my shoulders.
#9: Jason X – Adrienne gets a facial in liquid nitrogen.
I actually did not hate this movie, up to a point. Uber Jason was absolutely stupid, as was Jason surviving re-entry from space. But hey, this is Friday the 13th, most of this shit is stupid. That’s why we love it.
Is it just me or does Jason have a thing against pretty girls? He’s got a thing against everybody, but it seems like he enjoys taking attractive young ladies and doing awful things to their faces. (See entry #7)
#10: Friday the 13th part 6 – Steven and Annette saw something they shouldn’t have.
This kill is not particularly gruesome; Jason just gave them a little poke in the belly with his machete. What make this kill chilling is that this is something that we all have nightmares about. We see something we shouldn’t have. These two saps were not even on Jason’s radar, until that is, Steven had to go check out that noise he heard. After a short jaunt in the woods he sees Jason hacking old groundskeeper Martin apart. Sadly Jason sees that Steven sees what he’s doing. Well, Jason can’t have that. The result, handmade shish-ka-yuppies ready for the Q.
#11: Friday the 13th part 3 – Andy gets chopped in half while walking on his hands.
Nobody likes a show off, especially Jason. Its bad enough you’re having sex in his woods, do you really have to accent that by walking around on your hands like an idiot? If the answer is, yes, then Jason is going to chop you in half. I really see no other course of action. And for good measure he’s going to stuff you in to the rafters so your blood and entrails drip lovingly down on to your girlfriend. Then it goes without saying he’s going to kill her.
Again, this was nobody’s fault but Andy’s
#12: Friday the 13th part 6 – Hawes gets his heart ripped out.
HAWES!!!!!!!
That’s right, Tommy Jarvis you got your buddy killed. Horshack you have nobody to blame for this but your buddy, Tommy.
If you don’t know it already Hawes is played by Ron Palillo, Horshack from “Welcome Back, Kotter”. He also has the honor of being the first person killed by the newly reanimated, electro charged
Jason.
Jason was taking a nice quiet dirt nap and Tommy had to go poke the bear. Hawes even saves your life; Jason was seconds from stuffing you into his coffin when Hawes beats Jason in the back of the head with a shovel. Sadly, Jason quickly turns around and pulls Hawes’ heart out through his chest.
Ironically, Ron would die 26 years later from a heart attack.
How do you not see that coming?
#13: Friday the 13th part 7 – Judy in her sleeping bag, beaten against a tree
OK so this is it, this is my favorite kill from the entire Friday the 13th universe. Judy, waiting patiently in her tent for her “big hunk of a man”, Dan to return from getting fire wood, little does she know that Jason has already pulled his heart out through his back. As Jason rips open the back of their tent she tries to find refuge in her big yellow goose down sleeping bag. Goose down or not, this is no sanctuary from Jason.

Now the actual kill has always puzzled me, was it Jason’s intention to pull her out of the tent and kill her using the machete he just acquired from Dan just moments ago, or was she being such a pain in the ass squirming around in that bag that he said, “Ah fuck it”, and just slammed her into closest solid object?
Either way the result was spectacular. This was the first Friday I saw in the theater, and I’m pretty sure I broke out into hysterical laughter when it happened. When I finally got it on VHS I must have watched that part over and over again for a half hour before moving on. The laughs that came out of me could have woken the dead. I know it woke my parents.
So that’s it. Those are some of my favorite moments from the Friday the 13th series. There are a lot of honorable mentions, but I wanted to keep it at 13. Seemed like a good number. Did I leave something out that you thought should be on there? Let us know in the comments below.
Coming up next:
Remember a few weeks back when I talked about watching Friday for the first time with a group of friends at a sleep over? Well there’s a little more to that story. Tune in next time and I’ll tell you all about it.
