The Lunchbox: Discussion: Music, Memory, Mixtape

Posted on 2014-03-31 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-oldmusicNo guest today, but Station Manager “They Call Him” Tim joins me and we muse about memories of Nirvana, the notion of curated music in an age of information overload as the answer to why vinyl is so popular, and the international, instantaneous nature of all forms of music (which defeats ageism).

The Lunchbox: Richard Gage of ReThink911

Posted on 2014-03-28 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-rethink911September 11, 2001.

So many things changed that day, but are we really aware of all the changes? And what if we could tell that some of the changes weren’t real?

The narrative is well-known to most, but is it correct? Many have proposed theories around what happened, but a group of scientists are making the biggest claim yet: that it didn’t happen the way we’ve been told, because it couldn’t have.

Richard Gage is speaking at the Wu Centre this evening (March 29) at 7pm. He’s going to talk about the evidence that shows that what we’ve been told about the falling buildings doesn’t make any sense, and present some theories about what really happened. We talked a bit about the crux of the problem, where we go from here, and the questions we need to ask.

Find out more about their work and the talking tour at ReThink911.ca.

The Lunchbox: Caleb Marshall of RED

Posted on 2014-03-28 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-REDI believe in theatre. It is not just 3D television, nor is it a book being read to you. It is it’s own medium, unique and powerful. Caleb Marshall, Director and Co-Producer of the new production of RED, joined me to talk about the challenges of a bi-located play (produced, practiced and performed in Fredericton and Saint John), a play with only two actors (and lots of words), and a play set within the world of abstract painting.

The Lunchbox: Marianne Glover (Tay Creek Folk Festival) + Christine Leblanc (ReThink911)

Posted on 2014-03-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBoxIt doesn’t get more diverse than today’s combination of guests! First up, Marianne Glover from the Tay Creek Folk Festival dropped by to tell us about their upcoming fundraiser for the Festival, as well as shared some of this history of the event and some of the performers coming at this summer’s edition.

The fundraiser is called Synergies and Energies, and will be at the Wilser’s Room this coming Friday night at 8pm.

In the second half, local scientist Christine Leblanc came to talk about an upcoming presentation and discussion called ReThink911. We talk about the apparent failure of scientific inquiry into the falling of the three towers of the World Trade Centre on that traumatic day of 9/11, as well as the need to make sure that credible, independent science is demonstrated when investigating significant incidents.

The upcoming talk at the Wu Centre will feature Richard Gage of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth. That talk is on Friday, March 28 at 7pm.

If you are a student and wish to get a $5 coupon to reduce the door charge, please drop by CHSR between 10am and 5pm.

Elephant Skeletons – Zazzerzaz Vol II – Review

Posted on 2014-03-26 by Bondo Posted in Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

Elephant Skeletons HeaderSaint John, New Brunswick’s Elephant Skeletons‘ new EP Zazzerzaz Vol II is self described as sounding “like a crew of gypsy rockers threw a disco dance marathon” by the man behind the project Clifford J. Doucette. As a musician in psychedelic power folk band Wet Grow Light, Elephant Skeletons took some of that gypsy/world sound and added it into their electronic dance beats creating a driving energy that is incredibly interesting to listen to and keeps your body moving at all times. Mix some ethnic vibes with minimal industrial and some early Daft Punk and that is exactly the enigmatic sound Elephant Skeletons delivers. They are the future of East Coast electronic music.

Listen to Zazzerzaz Vol II here: http://elephantskeletons.bandcamp.com/

STU Lunchbox: Beer + STU Lunchbox

Posted on 2014-03-25 by encaf1 Posted in STU Lunchbox

STU LogoInfinite in variety, it has been said there is a kind of beer for every individual, for every taste. On the first half of today’s STU Lunchbox, Conrad Palmer investigates the world of the sudsy drink.

A last-minute cancellation meant a missing space to fill, so the normally silent-engineer-in-the-room, class teacher Mark Tunney joins a few of his students in reminiscing on the STU Lunchbox season so far, and plays a few of the interviews and other clips that didn’t make it on the original show.

The Lunchbox – Interview: John Staples on The Cross and the Closet

Posted on 2014-03-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

crosscloset2The world is a complicated place. Perhaps it has always been so, and individuals have always had to choose the compromises and integrations of the pressures of society, family, and your own sense of being. We think of ourselves perhaps in an enlightened age, but that only means that we can discuss these conflicts more openly. That is a great progress, but we still have work to do.

One of the conflicts that many people face are their personal feelings, morals and beliefs with that of a spiritual belief and collective faith. John Staples faced that a decade ago in his own life, and that drove him to find a reconciliation. He’s still learning, but a recent story of a student forced to either leave his church or volunteer with the LGBTQ community brought it all to the forefront.

John is now the president of Spectrum at STU and UNB, and is hosting an event, “The Cross and the Closet”, to start a dialogue, discuss what he’s discovered, and share in spreading compassion, understanding and growth. He dropped by the Lunchbox to talk about where this came from, and some of the issues surrounding his life.

The Cross & The Closet is happening at 7:00pm on March 21 at Brian Mulroney Hall, room 101.
