FredRock 2012 – A Brief Summary

Posted on 2012-08-13 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

First up on Day 1 of FredRock on Friday afternoon were The Poor Young Things. Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario they put on a good little rock show. I honestly didn’t know much about them, so thanks to FredRock for exposing me to these guys. They’re worth paying attention to.

After Poor Young Things was the highly anticipated Walk Off The Earth. And for only being the second act of the festival they almost stole the show. Highlights would include when both Sarah and Giovanni hopped in the crowd while never missing a beat, and of course their cover of “Somebody That I Used To Know” with the entire band all simultaneously playing the one guitar.

Next up was Halifax’s Matt Mays, and in my opinion he could have headlined the entire show. He played songs that everyone could sing along to, and interacted with the crowd, having a chorus sing-off on the song “On The Hood” between the beer garden side and the dry side (which he referred to as the loser side). Another great part to mention was when he brought on Fredericton’s own Andy Brown and the Poor Young Things onstage for a song. Great show from Matt Mays.

AWOLNATION was next, and they can only be described as loud. Being in the front row for these guys almost hurt, the force coming out of their amps honestly made it hard to take a breath at times. The constant wave of bass straight at me rattled my innards, they totally had a Spinal Tap “turn your amps to 11 moment”. At the time, I was only familiar with their monster hit “Sail” but like the rest of what I heard.

The closing act for Friday was Matt Good, who as a performer never lets you down. I’ve seen him a couple times before. He played many favourites even though he couldn’t play them all. He made the great point that all of these other bands only have a couple albums to choose their set list from, Matt Good has 13. So obviously we’re not going to get to hear the entire catalogue. As long as he played “Everything is Automatic” I would have been happy. And a concert goer actually somehow got past security and climbed on top of the stage! Good paused after finishing playing “Alert Status Red” so security could get him down safely, cause y’know, safety first.

And that wrapped up Day 1 of FredRock. The only part that sucked was that I had to get up and go to work in the morning. I was not functioning at the proper level Saturday morning after only a couple hours of sleep. I hope my boss isn’t reading… But it’s nothing a little Day 2 of FredRock wouldn’t cure the following night.

FredRock Day 2 started off with Cape Breton’s Carlton Stone. He was a fun one to watch. AND he’s got a contest going now that you can win a Carleton Stone show at your home!

Up next were Elliot Brood, a trio from Toronto. But don’t let their snappy outfits fool ya, these guys are real musicians, their set constantly changing from mandolin, guitars, ukulele and banjo. The singer Mark Sasso even brought out the kazoo for a song… like a boss. I really really REALLY liked these guys. October 18th they’re in Halifax and I really recommend you go. Check http://www.elliotbrood.com for more details.

Besides Steve Earle, The Sheepdogs were the band I was looking most forward to for the weekend. And they followed Elliot Brood. The Sheepdogs will be THE hairiest band you’ll ever see. And seeing them you’d think they just travelled here from 1972. And even a lot of their songs have a vintage rock sound. It was great seeing them live. Completely lived up to my expectations.

The Trews followed The Sheepdogs. I think Nova Scotia was well represented this weekend, eh? The Trews always put a show, playing all their hits. Coolest part of the weekend was when they brought out The Sheepdogs and Matt Mays for a song. It was one crowded stage, but what a great moment for Canadian rock.

Last up was the man of the weekend, the legendary Steve Earle and the Dukes. As most of you know, I’m a rock n’ roller, so many people questioned why I was so excited to see him. But I grew up listening to him. The way I explained it was, when it comes to Daddies and their little girls, most got lullabys. I got Steve Earle. That’s just the way it was in the Bond residence, and I’m thankful for that.

So hats off to FredRock 2012, Fredericton was the place to be this weekend for music. Definitely the biggest FredRock to date, and already looking forward to next year.

Live Music: An Ode To Joy

Posted on 2012-08-08 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

Seeing that it’s 2012 there is a multitude of ways to listen to music. But none better than hearing it live. And luckily there seems to be an EXPLOSION of live shows in the Maritimes, we no longer have to rely on our car stereos to hear our favourite bands. We can now witness the skill of a musician at work, and not just a perfected studio produced piece with effects (looking at you Akon).

To me, I feel that at a live show there’s a bond created between you and the performer. Recorded music can’t give me the feeling and atmosphere that live shows can. Sure, CD’s (live or not) are cheaper and provide hours of entertainment at your leisure, but they don’t capture or recreate the experience of being there in person, hearing the music straight from the instrument into your ears. “Live At Slane Castle” is a DVD released by Red Hot Chili Peppers of their 2003 concert at County Meath, Ireland. It’s a concert DVD that I own and watch often but it doesn’t compare to being there to see it in person, feeding off the vibe all the acts gave off. There was PJ Harvey, Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, and Chili Peppers. An epic line-up, and that was a moment of rock n’ roll history that I was able to be part of.

And recently the great trend is not just single artists on the bill, but co-headliners, multiple acts and festivals. And bands like The Monkees (the surviving ones at least) and Fleetwood Mac are reuniting to go on tour! It’s not just about pushing their album sales anymore, it’s about witnessing their passion, seeing their magic when they’re in the moment. I think it’s making people fall in love with music all over again.

Live shows can create warm memories (like becoming engaged at a Paul McCartney concert) and fun memories to look back on. I understand that going to a live show takes a little more effort to attend than simply turning on your iPod. At the show U2 in Moncton last year we all had to walk kilometers up to our knees in mud, but getting to see one of your favourite bands play some of your favourite songs? I still speak of that night as a religious experience.

I enjoy smaller shows just as much as the huge outdoor extravaganzas, sometimes even more! Acoustics in a small venue can be incredible. They’re more intimate and interactive and the artist can respond to you.

Sure a CD can offer you a perfect auto-tuned production, but it can’t give me the feeling of the drums booming in your chest, the ringing of your ears after the show from the amps, and just the opportunity to see a real magic show.

What’s YOUR opinion?

(Epic) Episode 11: Everything Avengers

Posted on 2012-08-03 by Marc Cabot Posted in EPIC!

Hosts: Marc Cabot, Joel Richard, and Richard Gray

Description:
Marc, Joel, and Rich talk about the Avengers.

Background:
Ok, so we don’t expect a lot of people to ‘get’ the intro sketch.  But if your a big avengers fan, and you’ve seen the recent theatrical release of “The Avengers”.. You should.
We had been kicking around the idea of doing an ‘avengers’ episode for quite a while.  We didn’t do it cause we were worried we wouldn’t be able to fill up the 25 minutes of talk time.  Boy, were we wrong.  There was still a long list of items we wanted to discuss.  Perhaps we’ll have a follow up episode in the future.

Epic Words:
“The Avengers, it’s what we call ourselves.  Earth’s mightiest heroes, that type of thing.  Let’s do a head count: Your brother; a demi-god, a super soldier; a living legend that actually lives up to the legend, a man with breathtaking anger management issues, and a couple of master assassins.  And you managed to piss off every one of us.  Congratulations.”
Paraphrased quote from Tony Stark in the 2012 feature film, “The Avengers. “

My Top 10 Rock Songs Of All-Time

Posted on 2012-07-23 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

Picking my Top 10 Rock Songs Of All-Time was a lot like “Sophie’s Choice”. When I asked others what songs would make their list I was surprised that no one was really close to choose the songs I did. I guess my taste is a bit eclectic. Finally, here are my choices in no particular order: *Please note: These are my favourite rock songs, not necessarily “the best”.

Ted Nugent – Stranglehold (1975) This 8 minute guitar attack is my favourite rock song of all time, hands down. If you read my previous post this will come as no surprise to you. The Motor City Mad Man exudes rock n’ roll, and the epic guitar solo in this song was recorded in only one take. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live years ago when my Dad took me to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Thanks Dad.

Guns n’ Roses – Nightrain (1987) Pretty much any song off “Appetite For Destruction” could have made it on this list being that it IS the greatest album of all-time. What many don’t know is that it’s a song about being messed up the cheap wine Night Train. Slash’s autobiography is a must-read if you have not done so yet, you’ll have a whole new respect for Appetite. “Nightrain” has been my ringtone for years. So if I’m not answering my phone, don’t be offended. I’m just rocking out. (P.S. – I get to see Slash July 30th, pretty effin’ pumped.)

Rolling Stones – Can’t You Hear Me Knocking (1971) This is an unusually long Stones song because of the jam session at the end. Richards said it happened by accident, after recording the song the tape kept rolling and everyone just kept playing. Featuring some mean Bobby Keys sax and killer beginning guitar riffs, you can’t sit still with this song. Another one-take recording, this just proves rock musicians today are nothing like what they used to be. Scott Weiland does a great cover on Santana’s “Guitar Heaven” too, worth checking out.

Led Zeppelin – Since I’ve Been Loving You (1970) This track arguably has the greatest guitar solo of all-time. Completely improvised at the studio and again done all in one take shows Page is a guitar God. Zeppelin has more “rocking” songs, and honestly picking only one Zeppelin song was the hardest part of making this list. But “Since I’ve Been Loving You” integrates my love for that sultry blues sound, and has to be one of the sexiest songs ever. I can only imagine what it would have been like to hear Page/Plant do this live.

AC/DC – If You want Blood (You’ve Got It) (1979) I’m not AC/DC’s biggest fan, but the first 30 seconds of the song will get your blood pumping and then makes you explode once the full drums kick in. Air drumming is not an option, you just gotta. Plus, this song will always make me think of Lucas in Empire Records, one of my favourite movies ever.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away (1991) The music came from a jam session between Flea and John Frusciante. The song itself is about selflessness, and the more the give the more you’ll receive. Anthony Kiedis’ “Scar Tissue” biography (another must-read) said the lyrics are about giving away a favourite jacket. Simple concept, epic song. And as far as live shows go, these guys blow me away everytime.

Alice In Chains – Man In The Box (1991) Layne Staley had one of the most haunting voices. In my opinion this marked the beginning of the 90′s Seattle grunge era, coming out an entire year before Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Once the chorus comes around I just want to dig out some Doc Martins and flannel and just give ‘er. Plus, Jerry Cantrall is pretty kick ass too.

Metallica – Enter Sandman (1991) Metallica is the epitome of ’90′s metal and Hetfield probably has THE best voice in rock. Again, picking only one Metallica song was near impossible, but this is a song about things that go bump in the night and will always remind me of how my buddy Joel and I used to stay up ’till 3 o’clock in the morning jamming to this over and over again. Our guitars took a beating. Bonus of growing up in a very rural village? No neighbours to complain.

Cream – I Feel Free (1966) This is the beginning of the legend that is Eric Clapton. Clapton again infuses that blues/rock that I love and Jack Bruce has that stellar voice. Everything about Cream is unreal. Best supergroup ever?

Golden Earring – Radar Love (1973) I don’t have much to say about this song, it just kicks ass.

Honourable mentions go to: Alice Cooper’s “Feed My Frankenstein”, Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation”, Poison’s “Nothing But A Good Time”, Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe”, Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”, Foo Fighter’s “Everlong”, Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock”, Mötley Crüe‘s “Dr. Feelgood”, and Foreigner’s “Jukebox Hero”.

I Know It’s Only Rock n’ Roll… But I Like It.

Posted on 2012-07-17 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

Let me start off by saying good music is just an opinion… isn’t it? Mitch Miller said it best when he said “It’s not music, it’s a disease.”, which is exactly the way I feel. Except it’s a disease I don’t want cured. See, I have a love affair with rock n’ roll. And I’m talking about the real rock n’ roll. I should point out that I’m not even 30 yet, so please don’t think I’m the cliché person who always thinks the music of my generation is better than everybody elses. My generation gave you Ace Of Base, and for that I apologize.

The point I’m trying to get to is that rock today isn’t as good as it used to be. Was Kratviz right when he sang rock n’ roll is dead? I’m not sure that it’s dead, I think it’s just hard to find. Today’s music charts are bombarded with pop and R&B, and most rock bands today all sound the same. I know all bands are influenced by someone, but some musicians need to understand the difference between “influence” and “imitation”. And it seems like everything today is pre-packaged/mass marketed, and it’s all about the “image”. I think today’s music lacks soul, it’s no longer an art. A great analogy I heard used a box of cereal. You consume it, enjoy it, then throw away the box and go buy another one that tastes the same.

I will admit that there are great and talented musicians out there currently, but they’re being pushed aside to make room for mediocrity at best. If you’re looking for good music you’ll most likely find it in the pubs and small venues with bands who play and sell their own albums. The rock n’ roll I love grabs you by the guts and kicks you in the face. It’ll take you on an emotional ride and has that certain something that words can’t describe. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Who, Ted Nugent, Guns n’ Roses, The Ramones… I fear this music I long for is long gone…
