Fundrive 2012!

Posted on 2012-03-24 by encaf1 Posted in Announcements, Events

The staff and volunteers at CHSR-FM 97.9 endeavour to bring a unique voice and service to the community — and have been doing this for over fifty years! We continue to grow, and have great plans t0 grow over the next year, including: a new transmitter, more sessions, more remote broadcasts, more, more, more!

If you’ve enjoyed our great programming — from the thought-provoking discussions of art, music, politics, science and more, to the great exposure to under-represented music of all genres, to so much more — why not consider a donation?

Thank you for your support!

Role Initiative- Episode #10

Posted on 2012-03-17 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Role Initiative

Episode #10: In this week’s episode, we speak with two fellow gamers, David Simmonds & James Waters, about some of their various social and computer gaming interests.  Into Battlefield 3?  So are these cats!  We also touch upon some of the stronger and weaker gamer developers, in our opinion, and what makes some of our favourite games so great.  This jam session mixes the old with the new, ranging from Age of Empires and C&C: Red Alert to Mass Effect 3.  Enjoy!

No Hockey Tonight! :(

Posted on 2012-03-11 by encaf1 Posted in Hockey

Unfortunately, the March Break and a last-minute problem mean that we won’t be bringing you hockey coverage tonight.

We are fully committed to full coverage of the CIS Nationals games starting on March 22, including bringing back Dave Ritchie as play-by-play host.

Good luck to the UNB V-Reds in their 3rd game of the AUS Championships! The series stands at 2-0 for the V-Reds, so they could sweep it in three!

The Scientific Sandwich- Episode #5

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Scientific Sandwich

Episode #5: in our fifth episode, I get the chance to speak with local practicing Psychologist Dr. Jean Craven.  As the first head of the Psychological Wellness Center here on UNB campus, Dr. Craven is part of leading a team of practitioners to cost-effectively address community mental health needs.  We discuss some aspects of individual versus group therapy, use of predictors in the development of psychopathology coupled with hesitation to diagnose certain disorders in children, and other long-term aims of the Psychological Wellness Center.

The Scientific Sandwich- Episode #4

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Scientific Sandwich

Episode #4: in this more poised interview with professor emeritus Dr. Will Van De Hoonard, he discusses his qualitative research about slow scholarship.  We hear about the follies of a rushed and projective research system, the reductive nature of the research results in use, and the strengths of more qualitative approaches.  This includes increased respect and regard for all the participants, less bias and pre-judgement from the researcher themselves, and slow qualitative research can be done much more cheaply than many traditional types of research relying on hundreds of participants.

The Scientific Sandwich- Episode #3

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Scientific Sandwich

Episode #3: in our third episode, we interview sex researcher (and dancing queen) Ashley Thompson.  Her work focuses on sexual attitudes.  Think you don’t come with any biases about what you do and don’t prefer?  The cognitive aspects of Ashley’s work help prove in many cases that you’re wrong!  We explore facial perception as well.  Clearly, with researchers like Sandra Byers and Lucia O’Sullivan working here, UNB is the place to study sex.

Episode #2: In our second episode of “The Scientific Sandwich”, we continue our interview with Adrianna Del Palacio.  We hear more able to struggles of experimental control and trying to re-interpret our data when results aren’t what we would expect.  This is part 2 of a two-part interview with Ms. Del Palacio.

The Scientific Sandwich- Episode #1

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Scientific Sandwich

Episode #1: In our first episode of “The Scientific Sandwich”, we get a chance to speak with Adrianna Del Palacio about her psychology research.  She talks about her research in Depression and Anxiety disorders and their relation to cognition.  If CBT is so effective against both genres of disorders, when why do we see interaction effects that reduce effectiveness against more sever types of depression?  This is part 1 of a two-part interview with Ms. Del Palacio.

Episode #8: Do you know what Live-action roleplaying is?  Well, in our eighth episode of Role Initiative, with speak with NERO NB Owner Andrew Inness about the LARP he runs and the chain of chapters it’s connected to.  If you’re used to an RPG being a pre-programmed video game, a simple board game, or sheer speech and textbooks of a tabletop RPG, a LARP like NERO will surprise you and keep you excited for another great gaming experience with friends!

Role Initiative: Episode #7

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Role Initiative

Episode #7: In our seventh episode of Role Initiative, we again speak with Jebb Richard about some of our favourite board games.  While we’re both fans of Risk 2210, we seem to agree that new Risk Legacy holds some great potential to long-term campaign play.  As well, we discuss the potential for Runebound- for added PCs released in expansion decks and other ways to customize Runebound in a rich and repeatable game.

Role Initiative- Episode #6

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Role Initiative

Episode #6: I told Mr. Kayne Wong to get out of my studio while I was recording this sixth episode of Role Initiative, but he wouldn’t listen.  So, we recorded another show… again about D&D and our take on some variant house rules.  I have a great way to both diversify and balance a mana point system; have you ever played Magic: the Gathering?

Role Initiative- Episode #5

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Role Initiative

Episode #5: With the announcement of 5th Edition D&D at some vague point in the future, Kayne Wong and myself discuss various house rules we’ve used in some of our D&D games.  With the aim of conceiving what this great next edition of D&D COULD be like, we gab about all pros and cons of one system or another of mechanics.

Role Initiative- Episode #4

Posted on 2012-03-09 by Robert Ogilvie Posted in Role Initiative

Episode #4: In our fourth episode, we talk to Jebb.  Just Jebb.  He’s the only one of his kind, a type of alien from the jebbula nebula.  We argue and mostly agree about comparing the strengths and weaknesses of 3rd versus 4th Edition D&D.  Both him and I seem to feel 4th Ed has more strengths than many D&D players give it credit, but the perfect system is balanced version of 3.5/Pathfinder.
