The Lunchbox Interview: Corinski Nowlan (“ICE AGE COMING!”)

Lunchbox logo

My guest is Corinski Nowlan of Herbert the Cow Productions, on the cusp of a new theatre project, ICE AGE COMING!, being streamed live on September 8, 9, and 10 at 7:30pm.

Corinski joins me to talk about this collective project which explores the nature of how each generation is responding to our current moment of post(?) pandemic times.

SYNOPSIS: As the world awakens, the pandemic seems but a fever dream to some. To others, the problems that were there before are not only still present but are amplified. The urgency of the climate crisis has never been so immediate.

Our MC (main character or master of ceremonies… “however YOU want to take that”) is a proxy for Generation Z. Tasked with the impossible, they are bursting with anxiety as various bureaucrats and activists seem to demand more and more from them, while at the same time hindering their efforts with red tape and science denial.

A hybrid of contemporary headlines and poetry – a further post-pandemic exploration of online/digital theatre – follow our MC through this existential nightmare as they struggle to dethrone nihilism as the top ideology of the age.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
Whenever we happen to make it to the end of another week, we come up with a flimsy excuse to play a bunch of music and occasionally prattle about it. Today is no different. Congratulations. You made it here. Your prize? A carefully curated series of tracks hand picked out by yours truly with very little preamble.

One would think that I’d get good at this by now, but honestly, if I just talked it would mean less music, and this is a music show. I don’t have time for talking.

Testing For Echo – Episode 5 – Changing It Up – Orig. Airdate 2022-20-08

This episode is one of my favourites to date. It just feels different.

You’ll see what I mean.

A couple of days ago I was listening to Episode 3 and came to a realization.

When I’ve been recording these shows I’ve had papers and notes all over the place and I was practically reading a script. And it sounded like it. I’ve been sounding somewhat mechanical and I don’t mind saying so.

So what I decided to do was go freestyle this time.

I guess I get a little rambly but what the heck. I think it went okay.

What do you think? There are a couple of spots where I throw in my opinion. Maybe I’m completely off base? You tell me.

Now, one of the very cool things about Progressive Rock is the HUGE variety of artists and music within the category.

In this episode there are 4 rather abstract songs from Canadian artists from a few decades ago. Some you may have heard of, or maybe not.

However, in the same category in this same episode I have legends Peter Gabriel, Alan Parsons, Styx, and Bill Bruford!

All Progressive Rock artists with assorted levels of fame and MANY different sounds.

That is so cool to me.

I had posted about this show in one of my Prog Rock Facebook groups the other day and was introduced to a very nice chap from the UK named John Young.

John has been in the Prog game for a while and his band Lifesigns has a new album called Altitude. John was kind enough to send the album to me and I have added the song Last One Home to the show. I really enjoy it and know you will too.

Anyway, I hope that you’re enjoying the shows so far.

Don’t forget that the show has a slick new Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/TestingForEchoCHSR/ .

I would like to thank my in-house art department for the great show logo and Facebook page and artwork. Great job.

Please feel free to contact me at TestingForEchoCHSR [at] gmail [dot] com with any thoughts, opinions, requests etc.

Episode Song List

  1. Alan Parsons Project – I Robot
  2. Another Roadside Attraction – The Maze
  3. Bill Bruford – Hell’s Bells
  4. Peter Gabriel – Biko (2021)
  5. Miriodor – Checkmate
  6. Styx – A Song For Suzanne
  7. Saga – Humble Stance
  8. Gideon – The Mechanic
  9. Lifesigns – Last One Home
