Interview: Jeremy Gorman (Playwright: “Doommates”, “Pass The Glove”)

For at least once in your life, I’d recommend telling stories; even if it’s not something you do forever.

My guest today is Jeremy Gorman, the playwright of “Doommates” and “Pass The Glove”, two of the seven plays being featured in the upcoming presentation by Theatre UNB called “From The Vaults: Comedy Gold from Notable Acts”. He joins me to talk about where these plays came from, and what it’s like reflecting on these plays nearly twenty years later.

Theatre UNB presents “From The Vaults: Comedy Gold from Notable Acts” runs from November 29 through December 1 at 7:30pm each night, on stage at the Memorial Hall at UNB.

Interview: Theatre UNB presents “From The Vaults: Comedy Gold from Notable Acts”

Every performance of a play is an ephemeral experience — but does the play itself have to remain like smoke in memory?

My guests today are Len Falkenstein (Director; head of UNB Drama; grand poobah of theatre in Fredericton), Maham Raza (Actor) and Shannon Munn (Actor), all part of the upcoming Theatre UNB presentation called From the Vaults: Comedy Gold from Notable Acts. We discuss how the plays remain relevant today and what it’s like to revisit selections from the 20-year history of the Notable Acts Festival.

Fredericton’s Historic Beaver Statue Finds New Home

One of Fredericton’s most important artworks, has a new, permanent home in the city’s Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

The 3000 pound limestone statue depicting a family of beavers was originally commissioned in 1959 as a 60th birthday gift to Sir Max Aitken, know as Lord Beaverbrook, who served as chancellor of the University of New Brunswick from 1947-1963. He also funded the building of the gallery that bears his name and assembled its original collection.

The city commissioned professional conservator Todd Vassallo from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, to restore the piece that had been slightly damaged and worn from exposure to 65 years of weather.

That statue originally resided in Officers Square, but was relocated after the squares recent renovations. It will now be displayed in the front glass vestibule at the entrance of the gallery, visible from both the inside and outside.

New Brunswick youth advocate speaks on new challenge paper “From Couch To Crisis”

Child, Youth and Seniors’ Advocate Kelly Lamrock hosted and spoke at a Youth Mental Health Symposium yesterday in downtown Fredericton, addressing youth and other professionals in the field on issues written in his new challenge paper From Couch To Crisis.

The paper is based of  a study called the State of the child data collection, which has revealed that the number of youth presenting to emergency level services with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation has been rising in the province the last eight years.

It also details that the prevalence of mental health disorders among youth aged 9-19 is 23.4%, much higher than the national average of 19.8%.

Lamrock says there are ongoing challenges with barriers to entry for care, creating more community resources and with how adults examine their world and its impacts on youth.

Have a listen to hear more on the province state of youth mental health.

61st New Brunswick legislative session opens with rent cap, electricity rebates

The 61st New Brunswick Legislative session kicked off this week.

Highlights from the throne speech include 10,000$ retentions payments for nurses, the implementation of a 3% rent cap effective February first, the removal of the provinces carbon adjuster on the price of gas and a 10% rebate on electricity bills.

Accomplishing this will be an upcoming challenge as the province is anticipating a 92.1 deficit in the aftermath of the previous government.

Some concerns in the new changes is the potential for landlords to apply for up to a 9% increase in rent for capital renovation expenditures, with little definition on what differentiates that term from routine maintenance and how the electricity rebate is supposed to help renters who pay their utilities indirectly.

Listen to learn more about the Holt government’s first days in session.

She joins me to talk about the impact the organization has in the community, and the difficulties in getting the word out to receive donations during a crucial holiday campaign.

The MRTI Agency celebrates successful first year of music facilitation

Since 2012, Emma Chevarie has operated Music Runs Through It, a website that provided Frederictonians with weekly listings of all the music events happening in the city and a brand she would eventually promote her own shows under.

After 13 years on her own, local radio DJ Rob Pinnock and his partner Krista Touesnard, a local fiddler and music teacher, came on to form the MRTI agency.

In their first year together, the agency has sold out two shows at The Playhouse, helped curate the first summer of programming for the city’s new stage in Officer’s Square and have brought on three local artists under their management.

The agency celebrates it’s first birthday tonight at Fredericton’s Wilser’s Room and already has several shows lined up for 2025, including a Blues Series, with multiple shows already sold out.

Have a listen to find out more about the trios endeavors in music facilitation.

Trio of anthropology professors publish bibliography on New Brunswick archaeology

In the course of their 15 year friendship, anthropology professors Trevor Dow, Ken Holyoke and Gabe Hrynick, have compiled a running google doc of archaeological research in the province, an endeavour that has resulted in the now published Bibliography of New Brunswick Archaeology: Works to 2022.

The bibliography spans 13,000 years and five archaeological periods with 640 entries and essays from compilers and indigenous collaborators.

The trio says their drive to study archaeology comes from the want to connect to people who lived in the past and learn about how they lived. They hope the bibliography to inspires others to do future research on New Brunswick’s archaeological history and adds more expansive, academic research to the pool of available information.

CHSR News – November 15th, 2024 – NB Lung Tackling Province Radon Concerns For Lung Month

November is Lung Health & Cancer Awareness Month and NB Lung is taking steps on the issue of Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is both odourless and tasteless, that affects New Brunswick as it has the highest levels of any province in Canada due to it’s geological makeup.

Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer for Canadians, with 3200 deaths per year.

NB Lung President and CEO Melanie Langille says organizations like hers have been increasing awareness over the last 10 to 15 years, and as a part of their initiatives for this month will be drawing for two 1000$ grants from those who purchase testing kits through NB Lung by the end of November, whose results test for high levels.

Interview: Melanie Langille (NB Lung/Radon Awareness)

Most of the time, we don’t have to think about breathing: it just happens. Thankfully, some people have taken it upon themselves to think very much about breathing, for the rest of us.

My guest to day is Melanie Langille, the President and CEO of NB Lung. She joins me to briefly discuss the history which led to the current organization, and delve into many of the elements of advocacy, support, environmental and and forward-thinking planning that they are working on. For this month in particular, two initiatives are front of mind: radon awareness and inhaler spacers for asthma patients.

CHSR News – November 13th, 2024 – Fredericton City Council Approves New Non-Motorized Boat Launch

In a brief meeting of Fredericton City Council Tuesday night, councilors voted in favor of a highway usage permit for the construction of a new non-motorized boat launch.

The city recently launched the River Access Initiative back in May, which aims to create a stronger network for these activities in the Lower Saint John River Valley Region, which contains almost 200 km of usable routes.

This newest launch site is along the Nashwaak River where the Penniac Bridge used to run across before it was torn down in the Summer of 2022.

The permit for the new site will run 10 years less a day, beginning retroactively from April 1st of this year to March 31st, 2034. With construction expected to begin in shortly.
