Testing For Echo – Episode 1 – Remembering Canadian Prog Rock Pioneers – NIGHTWINDS
Many years ago in 1978 the band NIGHTWINDS was hired to play my school, A. Y. Jackson Secondary School in North York, Ontario.
At the time I was already worshipping RUSH but had not fully delved into Progressive Rock yet.
I had not heard music like theirs before but I knew that they were fantastic and I liked it a lot.
They were the nudge I needed to become a Prog Rock fan.
And then I never saw them again…
Several years ago I did some searching around the internet and met up and became friends with former NIGHTWINDS keyboardist Gerald O’Brien.
Gerald had given me a few details here and there of the band’s history but I wanted to hear it all.
And finally, we have it. Gerald has sat down with me and told the amazing story of NIGHTWINDS. It’s even better than I imagined.
This is long but well worth the listen.
Episode Song List:
- We Were The Young
- Crude Exports
- Ivy
- The Pirates of Rebecca’s Choice
- Out ‘n’ About
- Sad But True
- As the Crow Flies
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Please enjoy. Don’t forget you can reach me with comments, questions and ideas at TestingForEchoCHSR@gmail.com

RFYL Episode – TheIdolEP217

Sometimes I wonder where my naming conventions come from, but to be entirely honest with you I’m fairly certain it’s nothing more than picking a name randomly out of a hat. Beyond that, however, I do have this carefully hand-picked bouquet of songs for you to listen to, and if you don’t want to listen to them I’m really confused as to how you even got here in the first place.
Is this tsundere?
Anyway, playlist:

RFYL Episode – MeteoEP216

Sometimes, a theme just kind of forms itself out of the vacuum that is trying to organize a playlist and figure out what ‘sound’ you are trying to go for. Other times, you put it together just based on the concept of “Yeah, I haven’t played that in a while”. Even OTHER, other times, you just mishmash a bunch of things together, then throw your hands up in the air like you just don’t care.
You decide which one of those this is.
Misery Loves Company – Blood Red Shoes
Dark Matter – Kilmore
Like A Ghost – Ian Blurton’s Future Now

Bard in the Barracks 2022: As You Like It

Ah, the summer fling. The ridiculous romance. The magic of falling in love. And: just plain magic.
Join me as I chat with Tilly Jackson (director), Sydney Hallett (Rosalynd) and Alex Pannier (Orlando) about one of two Shakespearean plays being offered this summer: Bard in the Barracks presents As You Like It. We discuss the ins-and-outs of one of the Bard’s lesser-known but beloved romantic comedies, what it’s like staging a musical, and how much everyone needs this delightful absurdity.
Bard in the Barracks presents As You Like It at 7:30pm in Odell Park on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until July 1, with a special (reduced price) preview performance on June 16.
All performances begin at 7:30 PM, but patrons should arrive at the park by 7:10 or earlier to allow time to buy tickets and make it to the play’s starting point. Good walking shoes, clothing for all weather possibilities, a flashlight, and a blanket to sit on are recommended.
Run time: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.
Tickets are available at the door at our box office by the main parking lot in Odell Park, or can be purchased in advance online at https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/bard-in-the-barracks-33541233539.
See the Bard In The Barracks website for more details.

Post-Cheese Radio 03 2022-06-16
This week we are mostly sticking to bands from the west coast, featuring sounds from Alarum Records and Kingfisher Bluez, among others. There’s a classic track by The Dishrags to start things off, some twee, and a heavy Pink Floyd cover for good measure. All of the bands on this week’s episode are femme-fronted (to the best of my knowledge).
Post-Cheese Radio 03 Track list:
The Dishrags – I Don’t Love You
Brutal Poodle – Drainage
SBDC – Losing It
jock tears – not yr sweetheart
SNIT – Milky White Drops
lié – Seams
Little Sprout – THE BEES THE BEES
tv ugly – qc
alimony – Pretty Kitty To Think So
supermoon – I’ve Been Told
cub – Go Fish (LIVE)
Pill Squad – Socialite
Tough Customer – Clean and Clear
GADFLY – Let There Be More Light (Pink Floyd cover)
Spread Joy – Repetition
Crime of Passing – World on Fire
ROUGE – Angerman
Over My Deadname – You Met Me at a Strange Time in My Life
Aunt Sally – Essay
cub – Little Star (LIVE) *Hidden Track*
Post-Cheese Radio 03 Show Notes:
- Vancouver Complication features The Dishrags alongside classic bands like D.O.A., The Subhumans, Pointed Sticks, and more. Sudden Death Records has CD reissues available online.
- Perfect Youth: The Birth of Canadian Punk, by Sam Sutherland is the second selection in the “Post-Cheese Book Club.”
- I mistakenly said that supermoon came after Little Sprout in set 02.
- Clarification: when I identified cub as a “predecessor” to other bands I meant in terms of sonic influence.
- Interview excepts from cub’s Brave New Waves session interview.

Bard In The Barracks 2022 presents: Julius Caesar

Good weather, long days, ye olde English — these are the signs of summer for me!
Joining me today are folks from Julius Caesar, one of the two Shakespearean plays presented this summer by Bard In The Barracks. Len Falkenstein (Grand Poobah of Theatre), Robbie Lynn (Brutus), Jason McInyre (Cassius) and Lucas Guttierez-Robert (Mark Anthony) talk with me about their interpretations of the classic play of political intrigue, murder and mayhem.
Bard In The Barracks presents Julius Caesar at 8pm on June 18, 19, 22, 25, 26, 29, and July 2 and 3, with a special (reduced price) preview performance on June 15.
All performances begin at 8:00 PM at the corner of Queen St. and Secretary’s Lane (near the Provincial Legislature), but patrons should by 7:45 if purchasing tickets on site.
Tickets are available at the door at our box office by the main parking lot in Odell Park, or can be purchased in advance online at https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/bard-in-the-barracks-33541233539.
