The Lunchbox Interview: Acting Out – One Act Plays (Notable Acts)

Posted on 2021-07-27 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

I had the chance to sit down with Notable Acts co-founder Len Falkenstein and a pair of directors (Julianne Richard and Alex McAllister) about their experience and excitement about the two one-act plays coming up as this year’s Acting Out production. Julianne Richard is directing the play Life Goes On, written by Muriel Falkenstein, which deals with reflections of the teenager’s experience of 2020’s digital response to pandemic living. Alex McAllister directs MAD About Van Horne by New Brunswick playwright Ron Kelly Spurles, which highlights a historical moment when a play was being used to attract the attention of the widow of a wealth citizen.

Acting Out Loud: One-Act Plays runs as a twin-bill performance from July 29-31, 7:30pm nightly on the stage at Memorial Hall on UNB Campus. Tickets will be available at the door for 15$ regular, 10$ senior/student/underwaged. Limited seating available. Contact dev.rockwell19@unb.ca to reserve tickets.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
While I wouldn’t even begin to call this a tour, we certainly are going on an adventure through some older tracks – which, by the way, still feels super weird to call them older. Some of the tracks were played right when they came out, which is only a few years into the life of the show – others? Well, they’re so recent that they’re barely a month old. So, sure, call it an adventure. Or, you can call all of this rambling pretext as an excuse to fill typing before I casually post my playlist and don’t look back at this particular post ever again.

Playlist:
Wild Fires –The JB Conspiracy
One Foot In – Cory Hotline
Lower The Wires – Blue Hour Ghosts
To War – Osyron
Steelier – The Wring
Dischordia – The Motorleague
A Tangle – Black Mastiff
Hotel Hallway – Like A Motorcycle
Primitive Data – Puta Volcano
Enchantress – Lycanthro
Deceiver, I Am – Silver Talon
Future Sun – Sacrifice to Survive
Crackerman – The Dyadics

The Lunchbox Interview: Alexa Higgins // Ian Goff (81 Minutes)

Posted on 2021-07-22 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

I sat down over Zoom to chat with Alexa Higgins and Ian Goff of Falling Iguana Theatre Company about their upcoming presentation of 81 Minutes, the Mainstage Presentation of Notable Acts 2021. We chat about the unusual beginning of this project, the challenges they set for themselves, and their excitement in presenting an interleaved pair of stories — all in 81 minutes.

81 Minutes opens on July 22 at 7:30pm at the Open Space Theatre as part of Notable Acts 2021. It runs Thursday through Sunday. The Notable Acts festival continues in many forms through August 4. See the Facebook event for more details, and to get tickets.

Sometimes cover songs are only OK. Some of them are actually quite terrible. These statements don’t apply to this track listing: all are jams and bangers and devastatingly great.

Here’s what you would have heard on the July 19, 2021 edition of the show:

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

Something something tropical storm, something something attach your floaties.

There, with the obligatory weather commentary out of the way, I do want to mention we’ve got a lot of cool stuff in this week’s episode – and while I say something along those lines almost every episode – there’s more new entries as well as old favourites that should really help tie things together.
