Testing For Echo – Episode 63 – Some Darn Fine Tunes Here – Orig. Air Date November 9, 2024

Hello there everyone. Welcome to Episode 63 of Testing For Echo on CHSR FM 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world. I’m your host Tim Scammell.
I’d like to start off with a couple of things. As always, I have a great assortment of surprises and a whole lot of stuff that’s going get you tapping and grooving.
First off, a little while ago I was honoured to Emcee a couple of nights of the Harvest Festival here in Fredericton. I met an awesome young lady named Kylie Fox who is from Fredericton.
You’re going to LOVE her.
Also, I’m sure you folks recall that my son Braydon moved to another province and said goodbye to a couple of bands that he was in.
Well, it didn’t take him long to jump into 2 bands in his new city.
And it just so happens that they are both recently recording, and I have one of the songs here.
So please head down the page to the little arrow to download/listen to the show.
Take good care,
Tim

CHSR News – November 8th, 2024 – Premier Holt Scraps Restriction On Surgical Abortions
In just under a week in office, Premier Susan Holt has repealed the stipulation in New Brunswick’s medical services payment act that prevents coverage for surgical abortions performed outside hospitals.
Holt said it was a move that required no delays, is a negligible cost to the province and will ease minds of those who need the access, and thanking those in attendance for the announcement who laid the groundwork.
Health minister John Dornan added that there are those currently in situations that couldn’t wait longer for this change.
Holt stressed that the work is not done and that the province can expect supports to this new access within the first quarter of 2025.

CHSR News – November 7th, 2024 – Pallmer Brings Chamber Pop To The Forefront Of New Brunswick’s Music Scene
Mark Kleyn (viola), Emily Kennedy (cello/vocals) and Charles Harding (synthesizer/percussion), also known as Pallmer, took home some hardware at the 2024 Music New Brunswick Awards on October 24th.
The trio won Song of the Year for the title track of their album Swimming, which was also nominated for Recording of the Year, a track Kennedy penned about sombre feelings and emotions amidst the dead of winter.
The nine-track LP was produced by Juno-nominated electro-acoustic artist and producer Joshua Van Tassel, who helped them achieve their ideal recording quality and added additional instrumentation to take their song ideas further, citing their award winning song as his greatest impact.
It is their second such award win, the other being Recording of the Year in 2021 for their debut EP Quiet Clapping, which Kennedy says is a recognition the group feels grateful for.

CHSR News – November 6th, 2024 – Fredericton City Budget To See Decreased Inside Tax Rates, More Frequent Transit Services
Fredericton City Council has agreed, in principle, to a 180-million dollar proposed budget during their last council-in-committee meeting before it goes for an official vote on November 25th.
The city saw a 6.98% assessment base increase in property value over the last fiscal year, 2.3% due to new construction and a 4.68% market assessment increase, which has prompted a proposed 2 cent decrease in the inside residential tax rate, for residents with full access to city services, from 1.3286 to 1.3086 dollars per 100$ in assessed value.
It will also see an increase in transit, with high traffic routes during weekday service being increased to every half hour, and as a result will see increases in rates for four-hour parking meters and both hourly and monthly parking rates in the city’s garages and car parks.
Listen to hear more details on the budget as a whole and the impending changes.

Interview: UNB CSA’s Extra Life Gaming Marathon
Games are a lot of fun, and a great excuse to help people who need it.

My guest today is Tanzim Bint Abdul Majid, the President of the UNB Computer Science Association (CSA). She joins me to talk about the upcoming fun annual fundraiser the CSA is hosting: a 24-hour gaming marathon, part of the global Extra Life organization. She joins me to talk about the kinds of games and other activities they will be keeping their participants busy with for the 24-hour stretch, as well the organization which will be receiving the funds (The IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax).
The UNB CSA Extra Life Gaming Marathon starts on 8am on Saturday, November 2 and ends at 7am on Sunday, November 3. (The time difference is due to the clock change this weekend.)
The event is open to anyone to participate, not just members of the CSA. From their event:
This is an in-person event. We will try to include a few virtual components, so that CSA Extra Life team members who are unable to attend in person (e.g. those not in Fredericton) may join in some of the fun, but most of the planned events (e.g. tournaments, etc.) will be held in person.
To participate in this event, please go to https://www.extra-life.org/team/UNBCSA and click “Join our team”. When registering, you may select to support any one of the hospitals listed (our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital is the IWK in Halifax, NS). You may also choose to be a “classic” (free) or “platinum” (US$19) player. As a platinum player, you can unlock special prizes from Extra Life when you reach certain fundraising milestones.
To be eligible for CSA Extra Life tournaments, prize draws, etc. during the event, we also require all attendees to raise at least CDN$15 (US$11) before game day. If you are unable to fundraise this money prior to the event, you will be required to contribute $15 towards our team fundraising for full access to the fun & rewards that we have planned. So from now until November 2nd, ask your friends, family, and community to sponsor you in support of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of your choosing.
