Testing For Echo – Episode 51 – Are You Ready? – Orig. Air Date May 25, 2024

Hello there everyone. Welcome to Episode 51 of Testing For Echo on CHSR FM 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world. I’m your host Tim Scammell.

I’d like to start off with a couple of things.

I have popped in music today from the legendary Steve Vai of Frank Zappa fame, among many other things.

I also have an older track from legend Adrian Belew.

Also, the wickedly sensational drummer Danny Carey and Tool.

And, Peter Gabriel live featuring the spectacular Tony Levin on bass and Chapman stick.

What’s the deal with this you may be asking??

I’ve said this many times on these shows that the best era of King Crimson was clearly the 1980’s with the albums Beat, Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair. No-one could ever change my mind.

In a few months, right here in New Brunswick, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Tony Levin and Danny Carey will be playing the music of King Crimson in the 80’s live! Beat Live!

I do indeed have a ticket. PLUS, I paid extra to attend the meet and greet and get photos with the lads as well as swag and a seat within the first 5 rows.

You’re darn right I’m stoked!

More to come.

So please head down the page to the little arrow to download/listen to the show.

Take good care,

Tim

2024 Barry Awards

After a hiatus, it’s grand to be back with The Barry Awards, our annual celebration of the great work and contributions of our members. This year’s ceremony was held at the auditorium of The Charlotte Street Arts Centre on the evening of April 2. It was great seeing so many of the members gathered to celebrate their own!

The event was emceed by Station Manager Mark Kilfoil, and the event was organized, decorated and carried out by Program Director Erin Bond, with assistance from several volunteers.

The Awards

  • Most Creative Show Promo: Synapse Radio
  • Most Streamed Online: Testing For Echo
  • Best Use of the Library: Throwback Shack
  • Best Returning Show: People Need Music
  • Joe Blades Memorial
Director’s Choice: Long-Term Volunteer: Ryan Howard
This award, formerly known as simply the Director’s Choice, was renamed in honour of one of the amazing members lost in 2020. Joe Blades was the long-time host of Ashes, Paper and Beans, a phenomenal poetry, spoken word and writing show which interviews authors, featured their works, and served as a cornerstone of literary recognition on CHSR. This show was just the tip of a gigantic iceberg, however, as Joe was also a poet, writer and publisher himself, and continuously published and supported the publishing and promotion of countless writers throughout the province. He was also a tireless volunteer, helping out not only with CHSR’s efforts, but with many other arts organizations in the city.

The award was given to Ryan Howard, the co-host of Against The Mat and The Recap Sequence. He has provided critical support to the station during fundraisers, promotions and most recently, the space reduction. His positive attitude, his desire to celebrate pop culture, and his eagerness to help move things forward has been tremendous.
  • Best New Show: Hispanic Connection
  • Emerging Radio Talent: Winter Case
  • New Member of the Year: Eden Jones
  • Host of the Year: Elaine Bell
  • Don Roberts Memorial
Director’s Choice: Past Member: Chris Waddell
This award, formerly honouring another CHSR legend as “the Carmen Kilburn award”, has been updated to recognize another legend who we lost just this year: Don Roberts. Don was a true gentleman, and loved to share his love of classic, early recorded music from the 30s, 40s and 50s on his program Musical Memories. This show has always had a dedicated following, and despite not having been produced for quite a number of years, is still in regular rotation.

The award was given to Chris Waddell, lead singer of The Wasteland Zombies and the host who revived the long-running original heavy metal show, The Crazy Train. Chris also joined us to serve for a time as our Music Director, and has always been an encouraging supporter of the mission of CHSR.

The Lunchbox Interview: The Communist Party of Canada

When you hear the word “communist”, what do you think you hear? Have you checked that?

My guests today are Liz Rowley, Leader of the Communist Party of Canada, and Ivan Byard, the General Secretary of the Young Communist League. They join me to explain what communism really means to them, how it challenges current assumptions about how our society works — in particular our business and government environments — and how there might — or should — be strong support for more elements of socialism within Canada.

The Lunchbox Interview: The History of Palestine

How much do you really know about the situation that has been unfolding for a long time in Palestine?

My guests today are three people with a much better, deeper and more personal understanding of the complicated and terrible history that has lead to the current situation between Palestine and Israel. My guests, in addition to the other organizations they have been involved with, are all organizers with Fredericton Palestine Solidarity as well.

She is previous chair of the Ontario Palestinian Rights Association, and continues her dedicated work in local Palestinian advocacy within her new community in New Brunswick. She co-founded the Conscious Birth Collective, providing support for women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, while also organizing events for women at all stages of life. Now a new mother, Chantelle finds joy in her family life while remaining committed to creating positive change in her community and beyond.
Tracy Glynn is an activist-scholar based in Fredericton on unceded W?last?kwiyik territory. Her activism and scholarship is focused on supporting communities affected by resource extraction, migration and border policies, and inadequate health care access. Tracy is the National Director of Operations and Projects for the Canadian Health Coalition. She also holds a regular teaching appointment in the Environment & Society program and School of Social Work at STU, and teaches sociology courses at STU and at UNB.
Karen Pearlston is a cis-gendered Jewish lesbian, an anti-Zionist, and a long-time activist in feminist, queer, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist/anti-colonial solidarity movements. She recently retired from the Faculty of Law at UNB, where her research focused on legal history, and on gender, sexuality and law. She is currently active with Fredericton Palestine Solidarity and the New Brunswick chapter of Independent Jewish Voices.
