Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
It’s a holiday weekend! We somehow made it here, and I decided to theme my show entirely off of something entirely unrelated, because making an episode all about Family (or I guess, not-Family considering the history of this show and how I’ve twisted everything) would go sideways. So here we are, another week of tunes being thrown at you – the bonus being that I finally followed up on a few bands I’ve spun in the past and found out I did, in fact, miss some releases.

Enjoy! Or don’t! I’m not your boss!

Livin’ The Dream – The Dyadics (The Dyadics)
Heavy Is the Reason – The Standstills (Shockwave)

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
After the miserable coldsnap, it’s important to realize a few things that we often take for granted. I don’t know what any of those things are, but it felt like I was about to start one of those campy self-help books that you can find that probably do actually help someone, but I have absolutely no business writing. So here we are, another music-filled episode to get you to your weekend or wherever you are when you happen to snag this podcast. It’s free, just download it. Or don’t.

There was a lot of outreach this week for music, which is awesome! I’m still going through the emails sent my way but I will get to them, I promise.

The Lunchbox Interview: #FreddyReach

This city is filled with helpful people, interesting things to do, and an abundance of possibilities. But sometimes, we need a little help discovering that.

My guests today are Emma Chevarie (Music Runs Through It) and Brenda Perrin (Fredericton Convention Centre), two of the organizers of the upcoming #FreddyReach community mixer. They join me to chat about the origins of the idea, their plans for the specific event coming up, and their hopes for the growth of community building that the #FreddyReach concept will inspire and facilitate.

The first #FreddyReach event (FB event link) is coming up on February 10 at 6pm until 8pm at The Tipsy Muse Café. They’re hoping for all sorts of people there, from newcomers still exploring the city to people who have lived here their entire lives, from people who are connectors to businesses and organization to those who wish to get connected. The mixer will also feature the opportunity to participate and share in a music jam.

You can find the #FreddyReach Facebook group for discussion, or visit the link tree the group has created for a wealth of local information.

The Lunchbox Interview: TheatreUNB presents “Paradise Lost”

There are few stories bigger and more epic than origin myths about the universe, life and everything. It can be surprising that they can fit on a stage.

My guests today are all involved in the upcoming TheatreUNB production of Paradise Lost, an adaption of the classic epic poem by John Milton written by Candian playwright Erin Shields. Len Falkenstein is the Director of Drama at UNB and director of the play (as well as lovingly dubbed “The Grand Poobah of Theatre in Fredericton” by me). Camryn Caudet plays Lucifer, and has built her own wings and horns as part of her costume. Shelby Gilley plays as both the angel Uriel and the demon Mammon.

I spoke them about how they felt taking on such epic roles, as well as the impact the adaption has. You’ll also here a scene between a disguised Lucifer and the innocent Uriel.

Oh! And because we didn’t get a chance to go in depth, Len wanted me to mention that there is featured sword fighting! (This play has everything!)

Paradise Lost opens on February 8 at 7:30pm in Memorial Hall, UNB Campus, and runs until February 11.

The Lunchbox Interview: Aly Howard (Veterinary Technician)

My guest today is Aly Howard, a local veterinary technician who has been nationally recognized for her hard work and dedication. In addition to chatting about how this profession found her and what is involved, we discussed her plans to fundraise for an upcoming mission to Ecuador. This trip will help spay and neuter local animals to help with population control and disease prevention.

You can find out more about the upcoming trip to Ecuador on their Facebook page, and contribute either by attending one of their fundraisers or through their GoFundMe page.

There will be a fundraiser on February 5 at the Oromocto Veterinary Hospital from 10am to 3pm. This will be a Valentines Day Pet Photoshoot with professional photographer Gary Weekes. Photographs will be by donation, minimum $25.
